Tanjong Rhu – A character that you like

The short story that I have read is Tanjong Rhu by Minfong Ho. Tanjong
Rhu is the story of a successful businessman with modern ideas and ways. He
has an elderly mother who is traditional in her ways. The story is set in the
present and office of Mr Li and his house in Singapore. There are few characters
in this story and the character that I like the most is Ah-Ma, who is Mr Li’s
mother.

Ah-Ma is a person who is honest about her humble background and

enjoys the simple life. She is a mother of nine children, grandmother of thirty-
four and great-grandmother of seventeen. Her children, like Mr Li, her eldest
son, are grown-up, independent and successful. She is a person who is
traditional in her ways. She has every reason to be proud and to enjoy the
success of her children. Yet, she still keeps chickens in the garden although
there is no need to. Not only that, she also still speaks Cantonese although most
of hre family members are speaking English to one another. This tells us that
she is a person who gives importance to traditional values. She also shuns
material gifts. Her character is admirable and this is why I like her character.

Besides, she is also very loving and devoted. Ah-Ma loves her family
very much which is evident in the way she always speaks fondly about them in
her recollections. Her happiness is based on her memories of the carefree days
in a hut on the beach when her husband was still alive. In addition, she also
shows her devotion when she performs her daily prayers to her husband
respectfully and meticulously at the altar. She has intense faith in ancestral
worship.

As a conclusion, for these reasons, Ah-Ma is the character whom I like

the most in the story.
