New Sample Detector Assemblies
ORIGINATOR: Laurie A. Wilmot and Randy Lloyd PRODUCT:
APPROVED: John C. Stout CELL-DYN® 3500/CS (96)
I. DISTRIBUTION:
Hematology Field Service Worldwide, Hematology CSC, TSR's, Hardware Specialist, and HTSS's.
II. PURPOSE:
The sample detector assemblies used on the CD3500CS have been replaced by a newer design.
There have been two notable changes to the assemblies. 1) The previous sample detectors made
use of an infrared LED in the sensor block. The new design uses a green 555nm LED which is better
absorbed by the hemaglobin in blood samples. This design has been extensively tested during
development of the CD3200, and has proven to provide better sensor performance as well as
improved reliability. 2) The new assemblies have an improved tubing configuration. The sensor
tubing is now held positively in place by a steel fitting and some tubing lugs. Also, the procedure for
adjusting the sensors has been revised.
V. PARTS:
8960223401 CD3500 sample detector assembly, right side.
8960223301 CD3500 sample detector assembly, left side.
REPLACED PARTS:
Old parts should be disposed of using biohazardous handling precautions.
COMPATIBILITY:
The new sample detector assemblies are compatible with all CD3500SL & CD3500CS instruments
having loop type shear valve ceramics.

Sample Detector Board Improvement
ORIGINATOR: Laurie A. Wilmot PRODUCT:
APPROVED: John C. Stout CELL-DYN® 3500/CS (96)
I. DISTRIBUTION:
Hematology Field Service Worldwide, Hematology CSC, TSR's, Hardware Specialist, and HTSS's.
II. PURPOSE:
Recent complaints from the field suggest that some of the sample detector boards would not hold
their setting after it was replaced and aligned. In other situations, it was all but impossibility to
accomplish the alignment of the board because the potentiometer would not adjust. The condition
that precipitated this problem was the change in value of a potentiometer on the board. The board
was manufactured with a 5K ohm potentiometer to give it greater range. This change proved more
troublesome than it's worth therefore the potentiometer will be changes back to its original value of
1K ohm.
V. PARTS:

ORIGINATOR: Laurie A. Wilmot PRODUCT:
APPROVED: John C Stout 5/27/97 CELL-DYN® 3500/CS (96)
NOTE: PLEASE REPLACE TSB 96-013 WITH THIS DOCUMENT, TSB 96-013A.
I. DISTRIBUTION:
Hematology Field Service Worldwide, Hematology CSC's, and Hematology TSS's.
II. PURPOSE:
The purpose of this retrofit kit is to replace the existing Micronics motherboard with the new
American Predator motherboard that we are now supplying to the field.
The new motherboards were part of an ECO to replace the obsolete Micronics LX-30 motherboard in
the CD-3500 Data Station. The complications are threefold:
Just as on the LX-30 board, the new motherboard has built in Hard Drive and Floppy Drive
controllers, as well as one built-in serial and one parallel port. This requires the permanent removal
of two of the five existing expansion cards when replacing a Micronics 386 motherboard.
The new motherboard comes with a set of cables for the LIS port (COM 1) and the Graphics Printer
(LPT 1) which will replace the existing cables on a 486 system or one of the 1700007 expansion
cards on a 386 system.
The CMOS configuration program is completely different from any used in Cell Dyn systems before.

CELL-DYN® 3500/CS DC Shear Valve Driver
ORIGINATOR: David Bannister PRODUCT:
APPROVED: John C Stout CELL-DYN® 3500/CS (96)
I. DISTRIBUTION:
Hematology Field Service Worldwide, Hematology CSC, and Hematology TMR's.
II. PURPOSE:
The purpose of this component change is to improve the reliability and ease of manufacture of the
CD 3000 series Shear Valve Driver. The basic function of the shear valve driver is to rotate the front
and rear sections of the ceramic shear valve assembly to isolate precise volumes of whole blood for
dilution. The driver holds the three valve ceramic pieces in precise alignment and provides specific
clamping force to hold the three pieces together. The driver accurately rotates the ceramic pieces to
two different positions for whole blood sampling and distribution and moves the front and rear
sections of ceramics to a central position to allow their removal for maintenance.
The current shear valve driver design has several weak points with respect to reliability of the
assembly in the field.
1. The motor speed and brake release ability vary with the supplied AC line voltage.
2. The assembly is not sealed from liquids, and therefore become difficult to rotate due to
corrosion and contamination.
3. The shear valve compression spring, which provides the clamping force on the ceramics, is
difficult to adjust.
4. The motor braking spring must be physically removed and altered to reduce the line voltage
required for release.
The new shear valve driver design will address these issues by implementing the following features:
1. A DC motor powered from a regulated supply, to make motor speed independent of

CELL-DYN® 3500/SL Loop Type Shear Valve
ORIGINATOR: David Bannister PRODUCT:
APPROVED: John C Stout CELL-DYN® 3500/CS (96)
I. DISTRIBUTION:
Hematology Field Service Worldwide, Hematology CSC, and Hematology TMR's.
II. PURPOSE:
It was designed to replace the current blood sampling valve on the CD 3500 with a longer life valve
(more run cycles between operator maintenance). This new valve is expected to be usable for 3000
run cycles or one week before operator intervention is required. This fact coupled with equal or
better performance in precision, carry-over, and blood flow dynamics indicate that MTBSC should be
improved on the CD 3500.
SPECIFICATIONS:
1. There is an external loop tube on the front ceramic valve, this loop is for the WOC dilution
and its' volume is 32 ± 3 µL. This loop has an effective length of 2.20 ± .03 in. and is
constructed of Teflon. To protect the loop from damage it has been fitted with an external
stainless steel protection coil.
2. There is an external loop tube on the rear ceramic valve, this loop is for the WIC/HGB
dilution and its' volume is 20 ± 3 µL. This loop has an effective length of 2.00 ± .03 in. and is
constructed of Teflon. To protect the loop from damage it has been fitted with an external
stainless steel protection coil.
3. The linkage pins on the new valves are in the same location as those of the current valves.
The new valves are, therefore, retrofitable to the old driver assembly (P/N 9211767) but will
not be, as this requires a modified knob, spherical washer, and cap bearing. The Loop
Type Shear Valve will only be used on the new DC Driver Assembly (P/N 8921167601)
you are going to replace the Ceramic Set with a new Loop Type Shear Valve Ceramic
Set. You must also install a new DC Driver Assembly if you have not already done so.

I. DISTRIBUTION:
Hematology Field Service Worldwide
II. PURPOSE:
This TSB has been re-issued to correct the administrative notes. TSB 96-008 should be discarded.
This TSB implements minor updates to the CD3500 flow panel to match all instruments in the field to
current manufacturing tubing configuration. There are three separate modifications to be made. (1)
A piece of tubing will be added to V9-6. This has proven to reduce the percentage of HGB & RBC
outliers. (2) The hydraulic line between the WOC mixing chamber and the shear valve will be
shortened. This has proven to reduce carryover. (3) The tubing connections to waste chambers 1 &
2 will be changed to reduce the possibility of waste liquid getting into the vacuum system. All tubings
used are kit items.

II. PURPOSE:
The intent of this document is to supply additional information regarding the changes and additions
to the Revision F release of CD 3500/CS software. Attached you will find both the Customer
Information and the Confidential Technical Documents. Please review each of these carefully as
they define those areas of the software code that have been changed. This revision was designed to
update instruments running on both Rev. C and Rev. D software. The research screen has been
removed and replaced with a Flagging Diagnostic screen that will be available to all customers. This
screen displays only the region percent values for Band, Blast, Immature Granulocyte, and Variant
Lymphocyte. In addition a change has been made to the WBC kinetic rate monitoring program. This
change insures that total WBC count is extrapolated on a sample that has a declining WBC rate and
also generates a recount. There were also two changes made to the Veterinary mode. The first
adds the capacity to display and print the WBC, DIFF (NLMEB), DLTA, and NRBC flags. The
second change to the Veterinary mode is the removal of the 30fl lower limit from the RBC channel to
improve the ability to measure RBCs when a species with small MCV's is counted.

New Peristaltic Pump Shoe
ORIGINATOR: Randy Lloyd PRODUCT:
APPROVED: John C Stout CELL-DYN® 3500/CS (96)
I. DISTRIBUTION:
Hematology Field Service Worldwide
II. PURPOSE:
The purpose is twofold. To introduce the new cost reduced peristaltic pump FRU's (Field
Replaceable Unit) now being used on all CD3000 and CD3500 analyzers. Also to effect a
modification to the new pump FRU's already in the field (see effected SN range).
The old peri-pumps had parts that were machine fabricated making them more difficult and
expensive to manufacture. The new peri-pumps use a one piece stamped out mounting plate. The
pump shoe was replaced by a molded plastic shoe. The new FRUs are designed to provide
performance equal to the old peri-pumps at reduced manufacturing cost.
It has recently been discovered that the plastic pump shoes used on the first of the cost reduced
peri-pump FRUs do not allow the necessary spring tension for proper operation of the pump. For this
reason, a pump shoe service kit has been created to retrofit the peri-pumps in question. The new
parts must be fitted on a next service call basis (see SN list).
For future reference. The sample pump (CN 8921146901) currently stocked in the CD3000 kit will
be transferred to the common kit. A retrofit kit will also be added to the common kit to be used for
configuring the pump to be any of the other pumps (see instructions). If ordered separately the
sample aspiration pump is CN 8921146901. The WBC transfer pump is
CN 8921137801. The only difference between the two assemblies is the pump tubing. WBC pump
tubing 92376-01 (qty of 4 LN 91485-01). Sample pump tubing LN 93471-01 (qty of 4 LN 91484-01).
Both pump tubings are also kit items.
NOTE: For a temporary "quick fix", the spring may be expanded slightly by hand until it has sufficient
force to compress the pump tubing just enough to seal it against the pump rollers. Care
should be taken not to apply too much spring tension as this will damage the tubing, or cause
the tubing to work out of position. The pump shoe and spring should then be changed as
soon as upgrade parts are obtained.
V. PARTS:
REPLACED PARTS:
All peri-pump assemblies are repairable. Piece parts should be discarded.
COMPATIBILITY:
The new pump FRUs are compatible with all CD3000 and CD3500 analyzers. The old version of
each pump FRU can still be used as before. The new FRUs are not a mandatory upgrade.
VI. PROCEDURE:
MODIFICATION STEPS:
Known effected S/N range: 30026 - 30102
The pump shoes that need to be changed can be easily identified by visual inspection of the existing
pump assemblies. This should be done whenever improper peristaltic pump operation is suspected
regardless of serial number. The defective shoe has a shorter spring retainer post on the bottom.
Viewing the shoe from the side, the end of the spring retainer post is flush with the edge of the
strengthening rib (Fig 1). The spring retainer post on the new shoe sits on a landing pad, extending it
down below the rib to compress the spring further (Fig 2). All of the defective shoes must be
replaced by the new shoe shown in Fig 2. Because the same retrofit kit (PN 9130494) will be used
across the product line, 2 of the kits are necessary to upgrade a CD3000 or CD3500. The extra
springs and tubing should be discarded. The kit contains the following:
1 PN 9320543 pump shoe (all peri-pumps)
1 PN 2508455 spring, sample & WBC pumps
1 LN 92376-01 pump tubing, WBC pump
1 LN 93471-01 pump tubing, sample pump
1 PN 2508441 spring, C/S pump (CD1600CS & CD1400CS systems only)
1 LN 93009-01 pump tubing, C/S pumps (CD1600CS & CD1400CS systems only)
1. Disable the analyzer and remove the front cover.
2. Remove the pump tubing from both sample and WBC peri-pumps. Discard the tubing.
3. Hold the shoe up and carefully pull the spring down until it clears the retainer post on the
shoe. Remove the spring from both pumps. Discard both of the springs.
4. Remove the screw and washer securing the pump shoe to the pivot. Retain the hardware.
Remove and discard the shoes from both pumps.
5. Using 2 of the kits (PN 9130494), install a new pump shoe (Fig 2) in each pump, securing it
to the pivot using the same hardware from step 4.
6. Examine and identify the two springs in each kit. The proper spring to use for both pumps is
made of thinner wire, and is physically the larger of the two. Install the proper springs in
each pump. The other spring is only used on CD1600CS and CD1400CS analyzers, and
should be discarded.
7. Install new pump tubing from the retrofit kit in each peri-pump. Both pump tubings are also
kit items.
* The sample pump tubing has orange end lugs. Pkg of 4 LN 91484-01. Qty of 1 LN
93471-01.
* The WBC pump tubing has opaque end lugs. Pkg of 4 LN 91485-01. Qty of 1 LN
92376-01.
8. Run some samples and verify proper operation of both peri-pumps.
* Sample pump: Observe aspiration of blood in open mode. The sample should stop
when the pump stops after the first draw. The leading edge will move forward 40 steps
past the sensor. There should be no aspiration errors or "creeping" of the sample after
the pump stops. The second pump cycle should pull the sample through the shear valve
with no air slugs, and stop well before the trailing edge reaches the shear valve. The

Injection Molded Transducers
ORIGINATOR: Randy Lloyd PRODUCT:
APPROVED: John C Stout CELL-DYN® 3500/CS (96)
I. DISTRIBUTION:
Hematology Field Service Worldwide
II. PURPOSE:
The current design of the WIC and RBC transducer assemblies are being obsoleted and replaced
with newly designed assemblies having injection molded components. The parts for the old
transducers are machine fabricated from solid stock making them difficult and expensive to

II. PURPOSE:
The sample detector assemblies used on the CD3500CS have been replaced by a newer design. There have been two
notable changes to the assemblies. 1) The previous sample detectors made use of an infrared LED in the sensor block. The
new design uses a green 555nm LED which is better absorbed by the hemoglobin in blood samples. This design has been
extensively tested during development of the CD3200, and has proven to provide better sensor performance as well as
improved reliability. 2) The new assemblies have an improved tubing configuration. The sensor tubing is now held positively in
place by a steel fitting and some tubing lugs. Also, the procedure for adjusting the sensors has been revised.
