ARTIFICIAL
INTELLIGENCE
ASSIGNMENT 1
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND
ROBOTOTICS

Amazed and shocked! These adjectives exactly define how I feel about the advancement
in robotics using artificial intelligence. I mean one could never have thought in the early
2000’s that robots could be created to an extent that they would start having almost the
same functionalities as human beings. Even though there is still far to go yet seeing
robots start feeling things just as humans do is unbelievable! I cannot say I was as
intrigued as much as by how things work as I am now. Artificial intelligence has become
part of our daily lives now. The era of mobile phones and laptops have made it pretty
convenient to do tasks and with the addition of artificial intelligence it has made things
seamless. It has not been long since I have started noticing that whatever I discuss with
my friends, teachers or families or I search it up, the same or the very next day I start
getting suggestions for the same things that I discussed. Like for example yesterday I was
talking about how I am planning on pursuing my masters from abroad and the very next
day I started getting suggestions for it.So how does it work? How is it possible that due to
artificial intelligence algorithms these devices have become so smart? Are they going to
beat the humans at their own game? Will it benefit us in the long way or will is the
human race at risk with such advancements? Sofia the robot made by HENSON robotics
bring all these questions to my minds. Sophia was activated on February 14, 2016 and
made her first public appearance at South by Southwest Festival in mid-March 2016 in
Austin, Texas, United States. She is able to display more than 50 facial expressions. She
has been created so life-like that in between the videos I for one completely forget that
she is a robot. She is even the first robot citizen of Saudi Arab. I am so intrigued by how
they created her! How did they come up with such algorithms? How much research was
involved? How difficult was it? And how is it that she is able to learn like infants from
scratch everything about human beings. Robots have already started making lives easier
for people. There is a café in japan which is run entirely ny robots. They have an owner
of course but there is no human staff. So robot are making it cost effective and the service
is done by machines who do not get tired, hence no slack in service. One of the most
popular ways robots are helping is in the medicine field. They are helping doctors is by
performing surgery or making operations easier. These machines make it easier to see
into a patient’s body and repair problems faster than human hands. So far, patients have
been receptive to robots in the operating room and appreciate their precision and
accuracy. However, many robots are only as effective as the surgeons using them. MEDI
is one robot that is aimed to help kids before going to surgery. They ease them by
relaxing them. The robot hangs out with kids in the waiting room and travels with them
to various procedures. MEDi has one job: making the hospital experience less painful.
There is also this robotic teddy bear that has over 1,500 sensors, video cameras,
microphones, and speakers. Robots are also being used as managerial staff to clear up
time for the workers they are being trained to take required credentials along with their
picture for future identification purposes. Another field where robots are assisting
humans in their work is plantation of trees. he team at SkyGrow developed the Growbot,
an unmanned vehicle that plants trees 10 times faster than a human can, at about half the
cost. Apart from planting trees Using AI sensors and monitors, robots can track the
growth of plants and learn which species survive and thrive in harsh conditions. Moving
from plants to water. Ocean One is a robot developed by a team at evolving science
which can go thousands of kilometer deep down in the sea for research purposes. Ocean
One was originally developed to monitor deep coral reefs in the Red Sea. These corals
are essential for a healthy ocean, but live far beyond human range. Researchers needed a
robot that could collect samples without damaging the reef and observe deep-sea
specimens in their natural habitat. Ocean One mimics a human SCUBA diver, complete
with arms, depth perception, and touch feedback, plus it can survive significant depths.
Since exploring the Red Sea, the robot has traveled across the world, helping us learn
about the ocean without disrupting it. So looking at how much robots have already started
helping humans ease their tasks one could say that the future for robotic frenzies look
quite promising. And to be able to develop something like these robots involve a mind of
a genius. One can only wonder how things will look in the next 20 years.
