and the measurement results are shown in the data information bar real time.

2.5.2 MeasPoint Select

There are 3 methods for gate MeasPoint: Peak, JFlank and Flank. The values for SoundPath and

Amplitude are different subject to the methods.

1) Peak: To calculate sound path and amplitude based on the peak within the gate range.

2) JFlank: To calculate sound path from the first intersection with the gate within the gate

range, based on which calculate the amplitude by searching for the echo peak where the

intersection locates.

2-13
3) Flank: To calculate sound path from the first intersection with the gate, and to calculate the

amplitude based on the peak within the gate range.

Take Fig. 2-3 for example:

‹ If Peak is selected for MeasPoint, SoundPath is S3, and Amplitude is H2.

‹ If JFlank is selected, SoundPath is S1, and Amplitude is H1.

a) WaveIn Alarm (positive): Alarm when the echo amplitude within the gate is higher than gate

thresh.

b) WaveLost Alarm (negative): Alarm when the echo amplitude within the gate is lower than gate

thresh.

2.6 Auto Calibration

Autocalib is for calibrating material velocity and probe zero (probe delay). The user may select either

material velocity calibration or probe zero calibration, or both at the same time.

a) VelocityCal: Calculate material velocity by using echo propagation time difference of the two

reflectors with known sound path.

b) Zero calibration: Calculate probe zero by using the difference of the echo propagation time

difference of one reflector with known sound path, and the echo time measured by the system.

See Fig. 2-4 for the calibration block as an example. The sound path of the first reflector is 50mm,

and the sound path of the second reflector is 100mm. The user can also use a similar test block for

auto calibration.

2.7 Angle Calibration

AngleCalib is for measuring the angle of an angle probe with a reflector (e.g. side drilled hole) with

known size and depth.

Note: Before angle calibration, probe zero should be calibrated first, otherwise the accuracy of the

2-18
angle calibrated value can not be guaranteed.

A test block with a side drilled hole depth 30mm, diameter 3mm is used in the example, see Fig. 2-10.

Here we use an angle probe (frequency 2.5MHz) as an example to introduce how to use Angle

Calibration method.

3) Adjust the compensation gain difference of Sur_Comp, select the submenu aStart, adjust

gate start to record the gate, adjust the gain to bring the echo amplitude to about 80%.

Press Record to record the echo. Now the curves are created automatically.

Note: If the echo amplitude of the reference test block or the workpiece does not comply with the

theoretical value, Sur_Comp (Surface Compensation) is used to compensate the difference,

which is commonly used in case that BW echo serves as the reference. Since BW echo

amplitude usually can not reach the theoretical difference with the BW hole echo amplitude of the

same distance, taking the BW amplitude as the reference will result in incorrect BW hole

equivalent calculated in practical testing.

Therefore, in the situation that uses BW echo as the reference, It is suggested to use the error

[between the actual difference and theoretical difference of reference BW echo amplitude and

the flat bottom test block echo amplitude of the same distance (if the distance is different,

calculate from the theoretical formula)] as a compensation value, so as to make the calculation

more accurate.
