LESSON RATIONALE
This lesson plan digs deeper into the process of having the power to change our community. By the way we live our lives
and treat those around us, we are shaping the world daily.
READINESS
I. Goals/Objectives/Standard(s)
A. Goal: Students will be able to list three characteristics of a good citizen and how they change their community.
B. Objective: After completing various activities, students will be able to state ways citizens have the power to
change their community.
C. Standards: 3.2.5: Explain the importance of being a responsible citizen of your community, the state and the
nation. Identify people in your community and the state who exhibit the characteristics of good citizenship. (ex.
being respectful, truth worthy, practicing tolerance and working with others to solve problems.) citizen:
someone with rights and responsibilities in a particular community, city, state or country citizenship: the act of
practicing one’s rights and responsibilities as a member of a community, state or nation
** for this lesson, we will only be focusing on being a good citizen within your community

II. Management Plan
a. Materials: matching activity, good citizen packet, pencil, sticky note
b. Time: 25-45 minutes
c. Space: Students will be seated at desks. They will be able to use room space when working on skits and
perform in the front of the class.
d. Behavior: Students will be expected to listen and follow instructions. They should be able to complete
activities independently and with others.
III. Adaptation to Individual Differences and Diverse Learners—
• I am providing visuals for those students who may struggle with making the images and connections
cognitively.
• I am providing a matching activity with multiple examples to help students come up with scenarios within
their groups.
Purpose: “Over the past few weeks, we have been discussing how people have the power in our government. Today, we are
going to talk about how we ourselves have the power to influence the community around us by being a good citizen.”
