General guidelines
What is described in this manual?
This manual describes „BTB” software configuration. The software configuration is designed to separate
groups of gen-sets with control of bus-tie breaker. It is dedicated to more complex systems with several
Mains incomers, gen-set groups and load feeders usually supervised by an external PLC.

What is the purpose of this manual?

This manual provides general information on how to configure the controller.
This manual is intended for use by:
Operators of gen-sets
Gen-set control panel builders
For everybody who is concerned with installation, operation and maintenance of the gen-set

!! Warnings !!
Remote control
The NT controller can be remotely controlled. In case that maintenance needs to be done, check the
following to effect safety.
Disconnect remote control via RS232 line
Disconnect input REMOTE START/STOP

The controller contains a large number of configurable setpoints, because of this it is impossible to describe
all of its functions. These are subject to change from SW version to SW version. This manual only describes
the product and is not guaranteed to be set for your application on arrival.

General description
Description of the controller system (with all options)
IM-NT controller is comprehensive mains supervision controller for multiple generating sets operating in
parallel to the Mains or in island parallel.
NT Family controllers are equipped with a powerful graphic display showing icons, symbols and bar-graphs
for intuitive operation, which sets, together with high functionality, new standards in Gen-set controls.
The controller automatically connects two groups of gen-sets (two buses) and controls the bus-tie breaker
(BTB). It enables synchronization of one group of gen-sets to another.
The key feature of the controller is its easy-to-use operation and installation. Predefined configurations for
typical applications are available as well as user-defined configurations for special applications.

Functions
OFF-MAN-AUT mode
OFF mode
All regulations are switched off.
Switching to OFF mode causes opening of BTB regardless of the settings.

MAN mode
It is possible to close/open BTB manually under supervision of IM-NT controller which doesn’t allow to close
the breaker if the bus voltages are not in phase.
Pressing BTB ON/OFF button closes/opens BTB if it is allowed by
• setpoints ProcessControl:Synchro enable, Mains coupling, DeadBusClosing
• binary input BTB disable

Hint:
It is possible to close BTB in MAN mode without voltage on bus left and bus right.

AUT mode
Controller closes automatically BTB if
• bus voltages are within the limits (Sync ctrl:Phase window, Voltage window)
• there is voltage on one of the buses and closing to dead bus is enabled by
ProcessControl:DeadBusClosing
• binary input BTB disable is not closed
• it is enabled by setting of ProcessControl:Synchro enable, Mains coupling setpoints

Hint:
It is not possible to close BTB in MAN and AUT mode if there is no voltage on both buses. If voltage on both
left and right bus disappears, the BTB is automatically opened.

After the BTB is closed, IM-BTB deactivates all regulation loops that are taken over by the IM-M(G)CB.

Binary Inputs - Control

AccessLock int
If the input is closed, no setpoints can be adjusted from the controller front panel.
Hint:
As the controller mode (OFF-MAN-AUT-TEST) is one of the setpoints, not even that can be changed.
The FAULT RESET and other control buttons are disabled as well.

AccessLock D#2
If the input is closed, no setpoints can be adjusted and no commands can be issued from IG-Display #2.

AccessLock ext
If the input is closed, no setpoints can be adjusted and no commands can be issued from any external
terminal = via direct/modem/internet connection to the controller.
Hint:
Use these inputs to lock out the selected terminals for setpoint changes and commands. Such a terminal can
only be used for monitoring.

Remote OFF
Active binary input forces the controller mode to OFF.
Hint:
Use this input to lock out the IM-NT control loops.

IM-NT BTB, SW Version 2.6, ©ComAp – August 2010 16

IM-NT-BTB-2.6.PDF
Remote MAN
Active binary input forces the controller mode to MAN.

Remote AUT
Active binary input forces the controller mode to AUT.
Hint:
Use this input to switch the controller to automatic operation, e.g. using the external key switch.

Force block 1-3

Inputs for user-specific blocking of programmable protections. If the particular input is active, all the
protections with the corresponding “Force block X” block type are blocked.

Load res 2
Load res 3
Load res 4
If the input Load res X is closed, the setpoint set #LoadResStrt X + #LoadResStop X (#%LdResStrt X +
#%LdResStop X) will be selected. Higher index has higher priority when more these binary inputs are closed
together. When not configured or not active, setpoint set #LoadResStrt 1 + #LoadResStop 1(#%LdResStrt 1
+ #%LdResStop 1) is used.
Hint:
IM-NT uses these signals for display purposes only, i.e. for correct bargraph indication. Nevertheless, IM-NT
is a suitable controller to be the source of Load res X and MinRun power X signals for the rest of the system,
if a virtual periphery is used.
All controllers operating in Power management must have selected the same Load reserves.
It is possible to use Virtual periphery to share the signals between more controllers on the CAN bus. In this
case one controller is a server which physically has the signals connected and other controllers get these
signals via CAN bus.
Setpoint set selection depends on the #Pwr mgmt mode – if set to ABS (kW or kVA), #LoadResStrt X type
setpoints are active, if set to REL (%), #%LdResStrt X type setpoints are active.

GroupLink
If this input is configured, the group linking function is active, i.e. this controller becomes the status server for
two groups of gen-sets and informs them about the BTB status.
If this input is closed, the controller reports BTB status as closed, if open, the controller reports open BTB
status.
Hint:
In MCB and MGCB application, this input is present from compatibility purposes only. It can report a BTB
status, however InteliMains will most likely not be the controller to control that breaker.
In BTB application, on the other hand, this is one of the most important logical inputs, which should be
connected to the feedback of the controlled BTB. Knowing the state of its BTB, the controller can report this
state to all other gen-set controllers on the CAN bus in order to merge / split the logical CAN groups. See
also setpoints ControlGroup, GroupLinkLeft, GroupLinkRight.

Emerg. Manual
The controller behaves like when switched to OFF mode if this input is closed. Controller opens binary
outputs or stays inactive:
Binary outputs – Power management (Sys start/stop, SysReady, Sys res OK, Sys res 1 OK, Sys res
2 OK, Sys res 3 OK, Sys res 4 OK),
Binary outputs – Breaker control (MCB close/open, MCB ON coil, MCB OFF coil, MCB UV coil,
MGCB ON coil, MGCB OFF coil, MGCB UV coil, BTB close/open, BTB ON coil, BTB OFF coil, BTB
UV coil)
Binary outputs – Fixed protection outputs (Horn, Alarm, Alarm flashing, Horn flashing, Common
Wrn, Common MPR, Common Fls, Common MP, Common Al, Common Hst, CommonActLev 1,(2),
CommonAlLev1,(2)).

IM-NT BTB, SW Version 2.6, ©ComAp – August 2010 17

IM-NT-BTB-2.6.PDF
The output terminals that are configured with inversion are closed. Voltage, current and power
measurement is active all the time, regardless of the actual state of the mains. It is possible to
influence breaker under IM-NT supervision without Wrn MCB fail or Wrn MGCB fail.
After the binary input EMERG. MANUAL is open again, the controller recovers to the previous mode
and behaves according to the actual situation. Function is active in any controller mode and
activation of this input is written to history.
Hint:
The function is intended especially for Marine gen-sets which are supposed to be started manually
while the controller has no power supply. To recover successfully from this state, only the signals
MCB ON/OFF coil should be used for mains and breaker control, as the other outputs are continuous
active during Mains operation and it is not possible to switch them between more control sources.
The full name of this function is emergency manual.

FaultResButton
Binary input has the same function as Fault reset button on the controller front panel.

HornResButton
Binary input has the same function as Horn reset button on the controller front panel.

BTBButton
Binary input has the same function as MCB button on the controller front panel, which in the BTB application
controls the Bus-Tie Breaker. It is active in MAN mode only.

BTB disable
The input blocks the BTB closing, even if all other conditions for its closing are fulfilled. Valid in all modes.
Hint:
If you need to force BTB opening by binary input (function “BTB Open”), use any binary input and configure
protection Breaker open.

Force sync
The controller will react on this input only if it is in AUT ctrl mode = COX (FOLLOW).
If the input is closed, controller will start to synchronize the voltages measured at mains and bus terminals
(or BusLeft and BusRight for BTB application), regardless of the actual state of breaker feedbacks.
Hint:
The synchronizing will start only if it is allowed by actual setting of Synchro enable. In the case of BTB
application, the method selected in setpoint Synchro enable is used (L->R or R->L).

Alt brightness
Active binary input switches controller display backlight to the alternative setting. Alternative intensity of the
backlight can be set independently using controller panel buttons.

ExtValue1 up
ExtValue2 up
ExtValue3 up
ExtValue4 up
Active binary input causes increasing of the corresponding ExtValueX value. The rate of change is given by
the setpoint ExtValueX rate. If the ExtValueX reaches the ExtValueXHiLim, the further input request is
ignored.

IM-NT BTB, SW Version 2.6, ©ComAp – August 2010 18

IM-NT-BTB-2.6.PDF
ExtValue1 down
ExtValue2 down
ExtValue3 down
ExtValue4 down
Active binary input causes decreasing of the corresponding ExtValueX value. The rate of change is given by
the setpoint ExtValueX rate. If the ExtValueX reaches the ExtValueXLoLim, the further input request is
ignored.
Hint:
If at least one of the inputs (ExtValueX up / ExtValueX down) is configured for the particular ExtValueX, the
external set commands to the same value are ignored.

ExtValue1reset
ExtValue2reset
ExtValue3reset
ExtValue4reset
Active binary input causes ExtValueX to be reset and held at its default value, given by the setpoint
ExtValueXdeflt.
Hint:
These inputs, if configured, do not block the external set commands (in contrast to ExtValueX up / ExtValueX
down inputs). However, if the reset input is activated, the corresponding ExtValueX is reset to its default
(ExtValueXdeflt) value. This default value is kept in ExtValueX until the reset input is deactivated, and the
external set commands received meanwhile are ignored.

PulseCounter 1
PulseCounter 2
PulseCounter 3
PulseCounter 4
The inputs are linked with corresponding counters, which integrate the pulses sensed at these inputs. Each
rising edge of the signal at input increases the internal counter value.
Hint:
Pulse width (both high/low levels) must be at least 100 ms in order to be correctly sensed!
Conversion ratio can be selected using the setpoints ConvCoefPulseX. The converted values are visible in
statistics – values PulseCounter X. These values can be reset using Statistics window in InteliMonitor.

IssueActCallC1
IssueActCallC2
IssueActCallC3
Rising edge on these binary inputs forces an active call to be issued via the corresponding channel.
Hint:
Can be used to send e.g. an SMS in the case of a special event, not covered with standard Active Calls.

IM-NT-BTB-2.6.PDF
Binary inputs – Status information
BTB feedback
Bus-Tie Breaker positive feedback input (closed if BTB is closed). This is a primary source for the controller
about the status of the BTB.
Hint:
The controller decides based on this signal whether the gen-set groups to the left and to the right of the BTB
are interconnected or not. E.g. it switches off the synchronizing between the two groups, if the BTB is
reported to be closed.
To inform the two adjacent gen-set groups that the breaker is closed or open, configure the binary input
GroupLink to the same physical input as this BTB feedback and correctly configure setpoints Control group,
GroupLinkLeft, GroupLinkRight.

BTB fdb neg

Bus-Tie Breaker negative feedback input (closed if BTB is open). Additional signal, can be used if both
positive and negative feedback signals are available from the breaker.
Hint:
If both feedbacks are used and there is a mismatch between these signals, longer than 500 ms, a BTB fail
alarm is activated.

ForceValueIn 1-16
If the particular input is active, the Force value function on that corresponding channel gets active, forcing an
alternative value to the selected setpoint.

Timer block 1-16

Blocking inputs for particular timer module channels. The input can lock out its assigned channel – if this
input is active, the channel won’t activate its output (Timer active X) to e.g. start the engine.

Lang sel int A

Lang sel int B
Lang sel int C
Set of binary inputs for forcing alternative languages. This set of inputs is switching the controller’s internal
terminal – for IG-based controllers the front panel, for IS-based controllers the IS-Display with address #1.
Encoding of binary inputs’ combinations:
Language index -> given by display setting 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Lang sel int A 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 1
Lang sel int B 0 0 1 1 0 0 1 1
Lang sel int C 0 0 0 0 1 1 1 1
Hint:
Warning – each language change causes the restart of the respective display (not the whole controller), so
the display’s control panel won’t react until the restart has finished (~ 5s).
Value 0 in the table denotes that the corresponding input is not active or not configured.
If more than 7 languages are present in the controller, it is not possible to force languages with index higher
than 7 using these binary inputs.
The reaction on BI combination change is 1s delayed not to react on transient combinations if a rotary
selector switch is used.

CtrlHBeat sens
BI "CtrlHBeat sens" should be assigned to the output "CtrlHeartBeat" from the other controller. If input signal
does not correspond to right form (log 1 / log 0 - 500 ms / 500 ms; +/- 100 ms), BO: "CtrlHBeat FD" (Fail
Detect) is activated. This BO can be used for primary controller blocking (switching to Emerg. manual,
disconnecting BO, ...) and mainly for disconnecting of BI "Emerg. manual" of this (backup) controller. What
means that the backup controller assumes engine control.

Time stamp act

Binary input activates time stamp writing to history depending on Date/Time:Time stamp act and Time stamp
per setpoints.

Binary outputs – Breaker control

BTB close/open
The output controls the bus-tie breaker. It is intended for contactors – provides a continual active signal if
BTB should be closed.
Hint:
Use binary output inversion (in GenConfig during configuration) to achieve that closed output = breaker
opened.

BTB ON coil
The pulse output for BTB closing. If BTB synchronizing is enabled, the pulse length is 2s, if not, pulse length
is 5s.
Hint:
ON coil can only be closed if UV coil is already active for at least 1s.

BTB OFF coil

The pulse output for BTB opening. If BTB synchronizing is enabled, the pulse length is 2s, if not, pulse length
is 5s.

BTB UV coil

are in limits at least at one side. If BTB synchronizing is enabled, the opening pulse length is 2s, if not, pulse
length is 5s.

BTB status
Intended for the indication of the BTB status. The information is based on BTB feedback and BTB fdb neg
signals except of situation of feedbacks mismatch.
Can be used for external indication of breaker status according to controller’s information.

Setpoints
Password protection
Any setpoint can be password protected - 7 levels of password is available. The password is a four-digit
number. Only setpoints associated with the entered password level can be modified.
Even though one level may have been set from the front panel, the affected setpoints are not
accessible from InteliMonitor (direct or Modem) until this level is set in InteliMonitor.
Setpoints opened from front panel are automatically closed 15 minutes after the last key has been
pressed or when wrong value of password is set.
The controller programming (configuration) requires the highest - password 7 level.

ProcessControl
#SysBaseLoad [ kW ]
From this value, the requested gen-set load is calculated, according to the number of gen-sets running (to
split the load among them based on their nominal power). The complete system produces the power equal to
this value. Active only when SysLdCtrl PtM = BASELOAD.
Step: 1 kW
Range: 0 – 65000 kW
Hint:
Setpoints starting with “#” are shared among all the controllers on the CAN2 bus, so changing the value in
one controller causes its change in all controllers. These setpoints are mainly present in IM-NT from
compatibility purposes only and have no meaning. Others have different meaning than in IG/IS-NT
controllers.
If you set this setpoint to a higher value than the system is able to produce, the total produced power is
limited with the sum of Nomin power setpoints of all gen-sets in the system.
The same holds for the lower limit - the gen-set power is limited to Generator protect: Min power PtM, and
IM-NT cannot force the gen-set to go under this limit, even if set in #SysBaseLoad setpoint.

#SysPwrFactor [ ]
Requested gen-set power factor when #SysPFCtrl PtM = BASEPF. Values 0,60 – 0,99 correspond to lagging
(inductive, L) PF, 1,01 – 1,20 correspond to leading (capacitive, C) PF.
Step: 0,01
Range: 0,60 - 1,20
Hint:
Active PF control loop in IG/IS-NT controllers only, not in IM-NT.

#SysLdCtrl PtM [ BASELOAD / LDSHARING ]

BASELOAD The gen-set is a part of the System delivered power control (#SysBaseLoad) and
produces a certain part of it, according to the actual number of running gen-sets and self
Nomin power. This option is only active in parallel with mains, in island parallel operation
the mode is always internally set to LDSHARING.
LDSHARING The gen-set load is shared with other gen-sets according to the actual load. For IM-NT,
this means it is able to influence
Hint:
BASE LOAD mode means that IM-NT speed/power control loops are switched off and only the control loops
in IG/IS-NT controllers are active.

#SysPFCtrl PtM [ BASEPF / VSHARING ]

BASEPF The gen-set power factor is controlled to a preadjusted level Process control:
#SysPwrFactor. This option is only active in parallel with mains, in island parallel operation
the mode is always internally set to VSHARING.
VSHARING The power factor is equalized with other gen-sets according to the actual reactive load.

IM-NT BTB, SW Version 2.6, ©ComAp – August 2010 28

IM-NT-BTB-2.6.PDF
Hint:
BASE PF mode means that IM-NT voltage/power factor control loops are switched off and only the control
loops in IG/IS-NT controllers are active.

I/E-PbL meas [ NONE / CT INPUTS / ANALOG INPUT ]

Import / Export measurement selection when one of power I/E modes selected. Current transformers are
expected at the left side of the BTB.
NONE No source for I/E active power measurement available. If selected, the controller won’t
influence the gen-sets on the bus if BTB is closed (i.e. for power control purposes).
CT INPUTS BusLeft I/E active power (PbL) is measured and calculated from controller’s current
terminals.
ANALOG INPUT BusLeft I/E active power is measured by an external device and the controller measures
this value via analog input MLC:I/E-PbL.
Hint:
PbL signalizes that positive active power value is considered as power flow from left side of the bus to the
right (from BTB-controller point of view).

I/E-QbL meas [ NONE / CT INPUTS / ANALOG INPUT ]

Import / Export measurement selection when one of PF I/E modes selected.
NONE No source for I/E reactive power measurement available. If selected (and setpoint
#SysPFCtrl PtM = VSHARING), power factor control in IM-NT is internally switched to
keep the gen-set group at #SysPwrFactor value.
CT INPUTS BusLeft I/E reactive power (Qm) is measured and calculated from controller’s current
terminals.
ANALOG INPUT BusLeft I/E reactive power is measured by an external device and the controller measures
this value via analog input MPF:I/E-QbL. In the case of a sensor fail at that analog input,
this setpoint is internally re-adjusted to NONE position.
Hint:
Setpoints I/E-PbL meas and I/E-QbL meas are internally interlocked. That means if at least one of them is
set to CT INPUTS, both PbL and QbL are measured using controller’s CT inputs, regardless of the setting of
the other setpoint.
In other words, either CT INPUTS option is active for both measurements, or these combinations are
allowed: NONE+NONE, ANALOG INPUT+NONE, NONE+ANALOG INPUT, ANALOG INPUT+ANALOG
INPUT.

Synchro enable [ NONE / L->R / R->L / BOTH ] (FV)

Switching between various synchronization modes.
NONE: No synchronizing is enabled.
L->R: BTB synchronizing influencing the “left” gen-set group is enabled.
R->L: BTB synchronizing influencing the “right” gen-set group is enabled.
BOTH: BTB synchronizing in both directions is enabled, default group influenced is “left”.
Hint:
If in modes L->R or R->L the particular group is connected to the mains, the synchronizing attempt won’t
start.
In mode BOTH, the group not connected to the mains is automatically selected to be influenced. If both
groups run in island parallel operation, the “left” group is selected.
In AUT mode, the process is fully automatic. In MAN mode, the controller will only react on the button
command if the transition based on this setpoint is allowed.

Mains coupling [ DISABLED / ENABLED ] (FV)

If set to ENABLED, the controller will allow a closure of the BTB in the case that both buses (sides) of the
breaker are connected to the mains. This can happen if a synchronizing command is issued – in this case it
doesn’t matter which Synchro enable mode has been selected. If all synchronizing conditions are met
(phase, slip frequency, voltage match, dwell time), the breaker close command is issued.
If set to DISABLED, the controller blocks the BTB closing in this situation.
Hint:
The controller can sense that a particular bus side is connected to the mains from the information provided
by other controllers at the same CAN bus.

IM-NT BTB, SW Version 2.6, ©ComAp – August 2010 29

IM-NT-BTB-2.6.PDF
In AUT mode, the process is fully automatic. In MAN mode, the controller will only react on the button
command if the transition based on this setpoint is allowed.

DeadBusClosing [ NONE / L->R / R->L / BOTH ] (FV)

Switching between various dead bus BTB closing modes.
NONE: Dead bus closing is disabled.
L->R: BTB dead bus closing enabled if healthy voltage present at the “left” bus side.
R->L: BTB dead bus closing enabled if healthy voltage present at the “right” bus side.
BOTH: BTB dead bus closing enabled from both bus sides.
Hint:
Mode BOTH = if a healthy bus voltage is present at one side and a dead bus condition at the other side, the
BTB closing is enabled.
In AUT mode, the process is fully automatic and without delay. No delay setpoints is available. In MAN
mode, the controller will only react on the button command if the transition based on this setpoint is allowed.
Delay setpoint is not available.

AUT ctrl mode [ NORMAL / COX (FOLLOW) ]

NORMAL: The controller in AUT mode works with all delays specified in setpoints and provides
automatic state transfers according to the settings.
COX (FOLLOW): The controller in AUT mode follows the states specified externally (e.g. breaker feedback
active or not) and reacts only on input command Force sync. According to the actual
controller state, the respective power control loop is active. This IM-NT behaviour is similar
to the behaviour of IG/IS-NT COX application.

WatchedContr [0-16]
The setpoint specifies which controller will be set as a master in redundant control operation. Control
unit follows all inputs and it is in the same state as the master unit. All binary outputs are opened,
CAN bus messages are not transmitted from slave unit and all other units know about this state.
Slave control unit does not work in power management (is removed from PWR management).
Setpoint is ignored till Emerg. Manual binary input is not activated.
Hint:
Activation of Emerg. Manual operation is possible only when Binary input Emerg. Manual is active
and WatchedContr is set to 0! Binary input Emerg. Man deactivation brings controller to the previous
operation mode (depends on actual state of feedbacks and inputs).
In the case when Binary input Emerg. Manual is activated and WatchedContr is differnet from 0 then
control units follows Master unit and receives all messages from the CAN bus.

Nomin current [ A ] (FV)

This is the current limit for the mains/bus bars. IDMT over current and short current protections are based on
this setpoint. See Mains protect: Mains2Inom del, MainsIshort setpoints. For BTB application, see Bus
protect: BusL2Inom del, BusLIshort.
These protections can be used for breaker built-in protections back-up.
Step: 1A
Range: 1 - 10000 A

!!! VERY IMPORTANT !!!

• The maximum input current to the controller current terminals is 11 Amps. Higher value is
displayed as measured limit, e.g. 15 Amps from CT is measured and displayed as 11 Amps.
• Take special care when selecting CT’s. All available 5 Amp CT’s do not have a range up to 11
Amps.

NominBusLImp [ kW ] (FV)

Nominal freq [ Hz ] (FV)

Nominal mains/bus frequency (usually 50 or 60 Hz).
Step: 1Hz
Range: 45 – 65 Hz
Hint:
The nominal value can be externally changed using Force value function. However, it is intended for
changes between standard nominal frequencies only (50 / 60 Hz) using Force value X source setpoints.
It is prohibited to use another controller values as a source for Force value in this case!!!

ControllerMode [ OFF / MAN / AUT ] (FV)

Equivalent to Controller mode changes by MODE→ or ←MODE buttons.
Hint:
Mode change can be separately password protected.

ConvCoefPulse1 [ /X ] (FV)
ConvCoefPulse2 [ /X ] (FV)
ConvCoefPulse3 [ /X ] (FV)
ConvCoefPulse4 [ /X ] (FV)
The conversion ratio between incoming pulses at binary inputs PulseCounter X and output statistic values
PulseCounter X. The ratio defines how many pulses (rising edges) have to be sensed at the input in order to
increase the output value. Unfinished “invisible” parts are stored in the controller even in the case of power
supply failure. Physical unit of the output statistic value has to correspond to the ratio unit “/X”.
Step: 1 /X
Range: 1 – 65000 /X

Comms settings
ControllerName
User-defined name, used for controller identification at remote connections. ControllerName is max 15
characters long and has to be entered using PC software.
Hint:
The setpoint can be changed only using PC SW when configuring IM-NT.

Force value possibility: Yes
Hint:
If communication via IG-IB (I-LB,…) is interrupted for more than 5s, it is automatically terminated. If it is
recovered again after this period, it is considered as a newly established communication and a new record
“Terminal” is done into history in case of LB/UART Log = ENABLED. This may cause overfilling of the history
in case of some monitoring tools, e.g. InteliSupervisor.
Access code change, password changed and password set is written into the history when LB/UART Log =
DISABLED.

Contr. addr [ ]
Controller CAN bus and RS485 identification number. Each controller in the group has to have its own
unique number.
Step: 1
Range: 1 to 32
Hint:
When opening Direct or Modem connection to the controller (using PC monitoring/control SW), the Contr.
address has to correspond to the Gen-set setting in PC SW.

RS232(1) mode [ DIRECT / MODEM (HW) / MODEM (SW) /

MODBUS-DIRECT / MODBUS-MDM(HW) ]
Communication protocol selection for RS232(1) line.
DIRECT: Connection to a local PC running InteliMonitor. RS232 or RS485 (with internal or
external converter) lines can be used. Set this also for IG-IB connected via RS232 line.
MODEM (HW): Analog/GSM/ISDN modem connection. Select this for standard modems with HW flow
control. If selected and no CTS signal is detected, communication may not work
correctly.

IM-NT BTB, SW Version 2.6, ©ComAp – August 2010 33

IM-NT-BTB-2.6.PDF
MODEM (SW): Analog/GSM/ISDN modem connection. Select this for modems without HW flow control
– controller will use SW flow control signals XOn, XOff, so only TxD and RxD signals
need to be connected between the controller and the modem.
MODBUS-DIRECT:Modbus protocol for direct connection to PLC / external SCADA terminal. Communication
speed can be selected via setpoint RS232(1)MBCSpd.
MODBUS-MDM(HW):Modbus protocol for modem (remote) connection to PLC / external SCADA terminal.
Communication speed can be selected via setpoint RS232(1)MBCSpd.
Hint:
Detail description of Modbus protocol see in Communication guide.

RS232(1)MBCSpd [ 9600 bps / 19200 bps / 38400 bps / 57600 bps ]

Defines the communication speed on RS232(1) line when ModBus mode is selected.

RS485(1) conv. [ DISABLED / ENABLED ]

If set to ENABLED, the communication RS232(1) port is redirected to the built-in RS485 converter. That
means the remote display RS485 line (for IG-Display connection) is blocked and the converter is used for
communication with superior system or ECU.
Available in all controllers except of IS-NT.
Hint:
Applicable only for DIRECT, MODBUS-DIRECT and ECU LINK modes.
This converter is not isolated!

RS232(1)MdmIni [ ]
Auxiliary modem initialization string – executed after the default modem initialization string. Used with
modem connected to the RS232(1) communication port.
Hint:
Applicable only for MODEM(HW), MODEM(SW) and MODBUS-MDM(HW) modes.
Use for special AT command setting of your modem if default string does not initiate the modem properly. AT
commands must be separated using semicolon “;”, max. length 31 characters.
The setpoint can be changed only using PC SW when configuring IM-NT.

CAN bus mode [ 32C / 8C ]

CAN bus speed selection.
32C: High speed CAN (250 kbps) applicable up to 32 controllers, CAN bus length limited up to 200
meters.
8C: Low speed CAN (50 kbps) applicable up to 8 controllers, CAN bus length limited up to 900 meters.
Hint:
Low speed use for long distance connection only. Set all connected controllers to the same speed.
If having problems with needed CAN bus length, see Communication guide / I-CR module.

CAN2emptDetect [ DISABLED / ENABLED ] (FV)

Enables the detection of missing intercontroller CAN connection. If enabled and no other controllers are
detected on the CAN bus (the complete bus, not only within the logical group), this protection activates.

SHxOcol detect [ DISABLED / ENABLED ]

This setpoint is dedicated for virtual peripheries; it can enable / disable error messages when more then one
master (source) is configured.

CANAddrSwitch1 [ MODEM / OTHER ]

This setpoint defines whether CAN address 122 is used for modem communication over ComAp I-LB
module or direct communication of another device:
MODEM: Default setting for modem communication
OTHER: Address 125 can be used by other devices to read data via CAN bus the same way as if using
addresses 123 and 124

Horn timeout [ s ] (FV)
The maximum amount of time the Binary output Horn is closed (horn, buzzer will sound). OFF = the output
won’t be activated, NO TIMEOUT = the output stays closed until the alarm has been reset.
Step: 1s
Range: OFF, 1 – 3600 s, NO TIMEOUT

BinInp delay 1 [s]

Binary input protection is activated when input is closed for longer time than BinInp delay 1. To use this
delay, Binary input must be configured in GenConfig for Property – Delay = BinInp delay 1.
Step: 0,1s
Range: 0,0 – 600,0 s

ResetActAlarms [ DISABLED / ENABLED ]

DISABLED: If Fault reset is activated (from any source), only inactive (normally displayed) alarms are
reset. So only inactive alarms can be cleared from the Alarmlist.
ENABLED: If Fault reset is activated (from any source), all currently present (including inverse displayed
= active) alarms are reset (asterisk in Alarmlist disappears for all present alarms). I.e. after an active (inverse
displayed) alarm later on becomes inactive (normally displayed), it is cleared automatically from the Alarmlist
if previously reset.
Hint:
ENABLED mode corresponds to the way that IG and IS controllers (classic line) handled the alarms.

BusL protect
The content depends also on programmable protections settings. This list contains fixed protections, which
are always present:

BusL2POvrldPro [ DISABLED / ENABLED ] (FV)

Enables or disables the BusLeft over load (IDMT) protection.

OverldStrtEval [ % ] (FV)
Specifies the overload level, where the protection evaluation starts (see figure at 2PovrldStEvDel). Under
this level the protection is not active.
Step: 1 % of NominBusLImp
Range: 100 – 200 %

2POvrldStEvDel [s]
IDMT curve shape selection. 2PovrldStEvDel is the Reaction time of IDMT protection for 200% overload
PbusL = 2* OverldStrtEval.
Step: 0,1 s
Range: 0,0 - 600,0 s
Protection: Breaker Open with fault Reset.
IDMT is inverse proportional to the BusLeft overload. The higher the overload gets the less time will elapse
before the protection activates.

When the IDMT protection is activated the BTB is opened and the event is recorded in the Alarmlist and
History. The further BTB closing is blocked until Fault Reset has been pressed to clear the alarm.

2POvrldStEvDel * OverldStrtEval
Reaction time =
PbusL - OverldStrtEval

Where Reaction time is the amount of time from IDMT detection to the opening of the BTB.

Hint:
The maximum allowable Reaction time is 3600 sec.

Following example shows reaction times for OverldStrtEval = 100% in dependence on BusLeft power and

Pwr management
#Pwr mgmt mode [ ABS (kW) / ABS (kVA) / REL (%) ]
ABS (kW): Setpoints #LoadResStrt X and #LoadResStop X are set in absolute values in kW.
ABS (kVA): Setpoints #LoadResStrt X and #LoadResStop X are set in absolute values in kVA. Nominal
kVA of each gen-set is calculated from Nomin current and Gen nom V setpoints.
REL (%): Setpoints #%LdResStrt and #%LdResStop are set in relative values in %. Then % means
minimum allowable relative power reserve of all running gen-sets in % of Nomin power.

#PriorAutoSwap [ DISABLED / RUN HOURS EQU / LD DEMAND SWAP ]

DISABLED: IM-NT does not provide the AutoSwap functions for other controllers.
RUN HOURS EQU: Running Hours Equalization mode. All gen-sets in the logical group are kept to work
approximately the same number of running hours. See also setpoints RunHoursBase
and #RunHrsMaxDiff. Up to 32 engines can cooperate in this mode.
LD DEMAND SWAP: For different sized engines, this mode allows to optimally select the running engines
according to the actual site load. Up to 3 engines can cooperate in this mode.

Priority ctrl [ DISABLED / MASTER ] (FV)

DISABLED: IM-NT does not provide the AutoSwap functions for other controllers.
MASTER: At least one controller in the logical group has to be selected as MASTER if some
PriorityAuto Swapping mode is enabled. Only the controller with lowest CAN address
becomes an active master, the other are ignored by SLAVE controllers. The MASTER
controller evaluates the Priority changing for all other controllers in the group and
sends them the “forced” Priority values.

Descriptions of the following “#” setpoints are related mostly to the gen-set controllers and are
included in IM-NT from compatibility purposes only.

#SysAMFstrtDel [s]
System start delay between input Sys start/stop closing and start of Power Management System. When
input Sys start/stop is controlled by mains decoupling relay, this setpoint adjusts the delay between the
mains failure and the emergency start of the gen-sets. If the MCB feedback is closed, Power management is
started with 1s delay after the input Sys start/stop closing - parallel operation with the mains.
Step: 1s
Range: 0 – 600 s

#SysAMFstopDel [s]
System stop delay between input Sys start/stop opening and Power Management System deactivation.
When input Sys start/stop is controlled by mains decoupling relay, this is a delay between the end of mains
failure and opening of GCB. If the MCB feedback is closed, gen-sets are unloaded to mains prior to GCB
opening.

#LoadResStrt 1 (2, 3, 4) [ kX ]
Active if Pwr mgmt mode = ABS (kW) / ABS (kVA).
Required system load reserve, or in the other words load reserve defines the maximum allowable load jump.
The active set of load reserve setpoints 1, 2, 3, 4 is selectable via binary inputs Load reserve 2, 3, 4.
When the required load reserve is not achieved, another gen-set is started. The system can work with active
(kW) or apparent (kVA) power.
Step: 1 kX
Range: -32000 – #LoadResStop 1 (2,3,4) kX

#%LdResStrt 1 (2, 3, 4) [%]

Active if Pwr mgmt mode = REL (%).
System reserve is defined by the maximum allowable relative load reserve of running gen-sets.
Step: 1%
Range: 0 – #LoadResStop 1 (2,3,4) %
Hint:
Use load reserve sets to separate minimum initial power for start-up and necessary reserve in steady
running conditions.

#LoadResStop 1 (2, 3, 4) [ kX ]
Active if Pwr mgmt mode = ABS (kW) / ABS (kVA).
The active set of load reserve setpoints 1, 2, 3, 4 is selectable via binary inputs Load reserve 2, 3, 4. When
#LoadResStop 1 (2, 3, 4) level is achieved, the gen-set with the lowest priority (highest setpoint Priority) is
stopped.
Next gen-set is stopped when:

Step: 1 kX
Range: #LoadResStrt 1 (2,3,4) – 32000 kX

#%LdResStop 1 (2, 3, 4) [%]

Active if Pwr mgmt mode = REL (%).
Next gen-set is stopped when:

Hint:
If additional Minimum Running Power system is used, the engine might not stop even if required by load
reserves. Yet another conditions must be fulfilled in this case.

!!! IMPORTANT !!!

Reserve for stop always has to be higher than corresponding reserve for start for all Power Management
modes !

The delay before next gen-set start-up in Pwr management. Delay is not used, when the first gen-set(s)
starts.
Step: 1s
Range: 0 – 3600 s

#OverldNextDel [s]
The delay before next gen-set start-up in Pwr management when the system load is equal or higher than
nominal power of all gen-sets on the bus.
Delay is not used, when the first gen-set(s) starts. Delay is used only when in island parallel operation, not in
mains parallel.
Step: 1s
Range: 0 – 3600 s

#NextStopDel [s]
The delay before next gen-set stopping in Pwr management. When delay is elapsed, the gen-set starts soft
unload, opens GCB, cools down and stops.
Step: 1s
Range: 0 – 36000 s

#SlowStopDel [s]
When the Slow stop protection occurs, the controller announces to the rest of the system, that the engine is
no more ready.
a) If there are another sets ready to start and supply the load, the protection waits until the substitute engine
starts and connects to the bus. Then the engine with the active Slow stop protection softly unloads, cools
down and stops. The controller waits for substitute engine max for #SlowStopDel time.
b) If there is no other set to start, the protection activates immediately. If soft unload possible (another set is
running or MCB is closed) engine is softly unloaded, if not, GCB opens immediately.
As every protection it has to be reset by operator to get ready again.
Step: 1s

#MinRunPower 1 (2, 3) [ kW ]
Following description is valid for gen-set controllers only and has informative character here:
It is minimum required power of gen-set group (sum of Nomin power of running gen-sets). When Binary input
Sys start/stop is closed, starts and stays running such a number of gen-sets to keep selected
#MinRunPower X value. This is independent on load reserves system, so even if there is high load reserve
that would allow to stop some engines, Minimum Running Power system may force them to keep running.
When binary input MinRunPower X is closed, the corresponding #MinRun power X value is selected. When
more binary inputs MinRunPower X are closed, the higher number has higher priority. When no input closed,
no #MinRunPower X is selected and minimum running power is zero, leaving only the load reserves system
to work.
Step: 1 kW
Range: 0 – 65000 kW
Hint:
An engine will be stopped only if the sum of remaining gen-sets’ nominal powers is higher or equal to
#MinRunPower X level.

#RunHrsMaxDiff [h]
Maximum allowed Running hours difference between gen-sets. Conditions to take part in Running Hours
Equalization:
Pwr management = ENABLED.
#PriorAutoSwap = RUN HOURS EQU
Binary input Sys start/stop is closed.
When a gen-set reaches #RunHrsMaxDiff value its Priority is automatically swapped with lowest priority gen-
set that takes part in Running Hours Equalization.
Step: 1h
Range: 0 - 65000 h

#PwrBandContr 1
#PwrBandContr 2
#PwrBandContr 3
#PwrBandContr 4 [ 1 / 2 / 1+2 / 3 / 1+3 / 2+3 / 1+2+3 ]
According to selected controller addresses combination (controllers must have addresses 1-3), running gen-
sets are selected based on the actual site load.
The limits of site power bands are given by nominal powers of particular gen-sets. The gen-sets that are
required to run in certain power band get the priorities 1, other gen-sets get the priority 32. This system does
not influence the setpoint Priority.
Example:
Gen-set 1 = 20 kW
Gen-set 2 = 50 kW
Gen-set 3 = 100 kW
#PwrBandContr1 = 1 (active if load under 20-#LoadResStrt X kW)
#PwrBandContr2 = 1+2 (active between 20 .. 70-#LoadResStrt X kW)
#PwrBandContr3 = 3 (active between 70 .. 100-#LoadResStrt X kW)
#PwrBandContr4 = 2+3 (active between 100 .. 150-#LoadResStrt X kW)
Above the last power band, all gen-sets will be instructed to run.

#PwrBandChngDlUp [s]
Delay for #PwrBandContr X setpoints. The site load must stay in another power band for more than
#PwrBandChngDlUp to switch to this power band, i.e. select different gen-sets to run.
Step: 1s
Range: 0 – 3600 s

#PwrBandChngDlDn [s]
Delay for #PwrBandContr X setpoints. The site load must stay in another power band for more than
#PwrBandChngDlDn to switch to this power band, i.e. select different gen-sets to run.
Step: 1s
Range: 0 – 3600 s

GroupLinkLeft
GroupLinkRight [ ]
These setpoints define the gen-set groups present to both sides of a special breaker (Bus-Tie Breaker). The
information about the breaker status is sent to all controllers via CAN bus and the affected controllers will
behave according to it.
Step: 1
Range: COMMON (=1), 2 – 32
Hint:
Example: if settings are GroupLinkLeft = 1 and GroupLinkRight = 2 and the special breaker is closed, a CAN
message is sent to notify all gen-sets in groups 1 and 2, that they should work together and make Load and
VAr Sharing not only within their groups, but together with the other group, too.
The message is sent if logical binary input GroupLink is active, and this signal should be linked to the
feedback of the special breaker (e.g. Bus-Tie).

Sync ctrl
Voltage window [ % ] (FV)
Maximum difference between mains and bus voltage. In case of BTB application, the difference between
BusLeft and BusRight voltage.
Step: 0,1 % of MainsNomV / BusLNomV
Range: 0,0 – 100,0 % of MainsNomV / BusLNomV

IM-NT BTB, SW Version 2.6, ©ComAp – August 2010 46

IM-NT-BTB-2.6.PDF
Hint:
The limit type (MainsNomV or BusLNomV) depends on the application type – MCB, MGCB / BTB.
See Voltage phases match indication on the controller Synchronizing screen.

Example 1.
Voltage match 1 2 3 Note:
1 1 0 Phase L3 is out of voltage window

Example 2.
Voltage match 1 2 3 Note:
1 1 1 All phases are in voltage window

BRtoBLAngleReq [°]
Requested phase difference between BusRight and BusLeft voltage during synchronizing. Use this setpoint
for phase correction of potential transformers connection.
Step: 1°
Range: -45° to +45°

Following is an example of the controller connection to a high voltage system.

T1 shifts phase +30°.
BRtoBLAngleReq = +30° for this example.

BTB T1
3x 230/400 VAC
3 3 x10 kV 4

VbusL IbusL BTB VbusR

IM- NT

Phase window [°] (FV)

Maximum phase angle (BusLeft x BusRight voltage) ±difference between requested and actual angle for
synchronizing.
Step: 1°
Range: 0° – 90°
Hint:
The setpoint works as a window surrounding the BRtoBLAngleReq setpoint. E.g. for BRtoBLAngleReq =
+30° and Phase window = 5°, the breaker closure is allowed for phases +25° to +35°.
If you want to lock out the breaker closing during synchronizing control loop test, set Phase window = 0. This
allows the control loop setpoints to be tuned while actual breaker closing is blocked.

Dwell time [ s ] (FV)

The period of time that the phase angle must be within Phase window and voltage difference within Voltage
window before a breaker (MCB/MGCB/BTB) is closed.
Step: 0,1 s
Range: 0,0 – 25,0 s

Freq gain [%]

Gain of frequency control loop.
Step: 0,1 %
Range: 0,0 % - 200,0 %

IM-NT BTB, SW Version 2.6, ©ComAp – August 2010 47

IM-NT-BTB-2.6.PDF
Freq int [%]
Relative integration factor of frequency control loop.
Step: 1%
Range: 0 % – 100 %
Hint:
Application Freq gain and Freq int setpoints are active during:
MCB reverse synchronization of the gen-set group back to the mains
MGCB forward or reverse synchronization of the gen-set group to the mains
BTB synchronization between “left” and “right” buses

Angle gain [%]

Gain of angle control loop.
Step: 0,1%
Range: 0,0 % to +200,0 %

Sync timeout [s]

Maximum allowed time for forward or reverse synchronization.
Step: 1s
Range: 1 – 1800 s, NO TIMEOUT
Hint:
If the synchronizing does not succeed within (Sync timeout / 10, but minimum 60) s, the control loop is
restarted to try again. So if you set the Sync timeout to sufficiently high value, the synchronizing cycle can be
internally repeated up to 10 times.
If NO TIMEOUT is selected, the control loop is restarted every 1800 / 10 = 180 s.

Volt/PF ctrl
Voltage gain [%]
Gain of voltage control loop.
Step: 0,1 %
Range: 0,0 to +200,0 %

Voltage int [%]

Relative integration factor of voltage control loop. Increasing of integration value causes quicker response.
Step: 1%
Range: 0 – 100 %
Hint:
Application Voltage gain and Voltage int setpoints are active during:
MCB reverse synchronization of the gen-set group back to the mains
MGCB forward or reverse synchronization of the gen-set group to the mains
BTB synchronization between “left” and “right” buses

Force value
Force value 1-16 [X]
„Source“ setpoints containing the alternative values for selected „target“ setpoints. The setpoint with index X
corresponds to the Force value Xth function.
Hint:
As the “source” for Force value channel can be used any compatible value in the controller (in general all
values and setpoints of types integer8,16,32). In that case the corresponding Force value X setpoint is
unused on that channel.

ExtValue1LoLim [X]
ExtValue2LoLim [X]
ExtValue3LoLim [X]
ExtValue4LoLim [X]
ExtValueX low limit. The value is not decreased under this limit, even if the request still exists (via binary
input ExtValueX down).
Step: 1X
Range: -32000 – ExtValueXHiLim X

ExtValue1HiLim [X]
ExtValue2HiLim [X]
ExtValue3HiLim [X]
ExtValue4HiLim [X]
ExtValueX high limit. The value is not increased above this limit, even if the request still exists (via binary
input ExtValueX up).
Step: 1X
Range: ExtValueXLoLim – 32000 X

ExtValue1 rate [ X/s ] (FV)

ExtValue2 rate [ X/s ] (FV)
ExtValue3 rate [ X/s ] (FV)
ExtValue4 rate [ X/s ] (FV)
ExtValueX rate of change per second. If the binary input ExtValueX down or ExtValueX up is active, the
value is changed according to this rate.
Step: 1 X/s
Range: 1 – 10000 X/s
Hint:
If binary input ExtValueXreset is active, the corresponding ExtValueX is held at its default value, regardless
of the activity of inputs Up and Down and regardless of incoming external set commands.
Using this function in combination with Force value you can externally control selected setpoints’ values and
achieve some special behaviour of the controller.

ExtValue1deflt [ X ] (FV)
ExtValue2deflt [ X ] (FV)
ExtValue3deflt [ X ] (FV)
ExtValue4deflt [ X ] (FV)
ExtValueX default (starting) value. If ExtValueX is changed from this default value using Modbus command,
the new value is kept in ExtValueX until another command arrives or until the controller has been switched
off. If the binary input ExtValueXreset is active, the ExtValueX is held at this value regardless of other
conditions.
Step: 1X
Range: -32000 – 32000 X

PLC settings
The content depends on actual PLC configuration. Contains all setpoints related to the configurable PLC
blocks. If this setpoint group is empty, it is not displayed.

Timer settings
Timer channel 1-16
Defines the setting of particular timer channel.
There is 16 channels, each defines occurrence date and time (year, month, day, hour, minute), duration time
(in minutes, maximum is 24*60), repeating period (day, week, month, once). In case of week – day of the
week selection, when should be executed + selection of repeating (every 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th week); In case of
month – day of the month selection (e.g. every 3rd day or every 2nd Monday)
Every channel can be disabled by blocking input (physical input or logical output). If blocking input is active
then the timer is not activated.
The channels are divided into groups of 4. Every group has independent binary output. There is also one
common output for all 16 channels.

Act. calls/SMS
History record [ DISABLED / ENABLED ] (FV)
Enables or disables active calls/SMS/mails to selected phone, mobile or mail address when a History record
type “protection” occurs.
Hint:
If enabled for an SMS type active call, an empty Alarmlist would be sent, as this type of protection does not
appear there. So together with the Alarmlist content, the prefix of the History record (“Hst” in english) is sent
to indicate the reason for the active call (available in future SW versions).

Alarm only [ DISABLED / ENABLED ] (FV)

Enables or disables active calls/SMS/mails to selected phone, mobile or mail address when an Alarm only
type protection occurs.

Warning [ DISABLED / ENABLED ] (FV)

Enables or disables active calls/SMS/mails to selected phone, mobile or mail address when a Warning type
protection occurs.

Breaker Open [ DISABLED / ENABLED ] (FV)

Enables or disables active calls/SMS/mails to selected phone, mobile or mail address when a Breaker Open
type protection occurs.
Hint:
If enabled for an SMS type active call, an empty Alarmlist would be sent, as this type of protection does not
appear there. So together with the Alarmlist content, the prefix of the Breaker Open (“BOp” in english) is sent
to indicate the reason for the active call (available in future SW versions).

BrkOpn w/Reset [ DISABLED / ENABLED ] (FV)

Enables or disables active calls/SMS/mails to selected phone, mobile or mail address when a BrkOpn
w/Reset type protection occurs.

When an active call is issued, this setpoint defines the number of attempts to deliver the message.
Step: 1
Range: 1 to 250
Hint:
Timeout for connection is 90 sec and after 120 sec controller starts the next attempt. During the time the
controller is trying to issue an active call, incoming calls are blocked.

Acall+SMS lang [ 1 to 7 ]
The setpoint specifies in which language the SMS and e-mail messages are issued in case of active call.
The adjusted number corresponds with the order of language as configured in GenConfig. If the selected
number is out of range of possible languages of the controller, the first language is selected as default.

Date/Time
Time stamp act [ DISABLED / CONDITION / ALWAYS ] (FV)
Defines the activity of time stamp function:
DISABLED No periodic records are made.
CONDITION Records are made with period given by Time stamp per only if binary input “Time stamp act”
is active.
ALWAYS Records are made with period given by Time stamp per regardless of any condition.

Controller configuration and monitoring
IM-NT controller uses the same configuration and monitoring tools as IGS-NT controllers: GenConfig (GC)
and InteliMonitor (IMON).
GC and IMON are based on Windows 98/NT/ME/2000/XP or higher platform and require approximately 15
Mbyte of hard disc free space.

Direct connection to the PC

IGS-NT controller can be connected directly with PC via RS232 or USB interface. Use the crossed RS232 or
USB cable to connect PC with controller.
Hint:
Make sure the grounding system on controller and PC – COM port (negative of the PC DC supply) are
identical – before the first direct connection. There must not be any voltage between these two points
otherwise the internal PTC protection activates and interrupts RS232 communication. In such case
disconnect RS232 line, wait a minute for PTC recovery and try again. The simple solution is to assure that
the PC supply 240/20V is ground free (GND terminal is not connected).
