Literature Summary

Tessa Colgen
What I have learned from participating in a literature circle is that
there are many activities that can be implemented to help students
comprehend and master the concepts that are derived from the
standards. Students are placed into groups and can either choose
from a list of books provided by the teacher to read or the teacher
can assign a book for each group to read. The book can be divided
into three parts, the beginning, the middle, and the end. After
reading one-third of the book, the students are given roles to
complete that helps them form a deeper understanding of different
components of the book.
The significance of what I have learned is that literature circles are
effective to implement in the classroom because they help students
develop a deeper understanding of the book as well as learn more
about responsibility and what it means to be held accountable for
completing their assigned roles.
I plan on implementing literature circles in my classroom. They give
students a sense of responsibility and provide them with meaningful
time to collaborate with their peers and participate in discussions
about the book. It gives the teacher time to walk around the
classroom and talk with groups about their book and ask them
questions to help develop their thinking.
