Audience: This course is free and focused on graduate level (MSc and PhD). Special request for senior
researchers, post-doctoral or other professionals will be considered only if there are still spots not
fulfilled by graduate students. Enrollment requirements: intention letter signed by the supervisor
describing why moderation and mediation analysis are important for your research + registration at the
Graduate Program of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology website
(http://www.psiquiatriaunifesp.posgrad.com.br/) + any proof of previous attended courses in
biostatistics. The intention letter + the PDF with proofs of previous knowledge need to be sent to

Ementa/Programação:
This is a 5-days course focused on two topics that are closely related and often confused. Suppose we
have three variables, X, M and Y. We say that M is a mediator of the effect of X (a predictor) on Y (an
outcome) if X carries its influence on Y at least partly by influencing M, which then influences Y. This is
also known as an indirect effect of X on Y through M. On the other hand, we say that M moderates the
effect of X on Y if that effect varies in size, sign, or strength as a function of M. This is also known as
interaction. Regarding the mediation, it is possible to given causal explanation making flexible some
assumptions (non-linearity and interaction between X and M). Day 1) Introduction to Mplus language and
main commands linked to different regression model (continuous, dichotomous, count, and censored
outcomes). Day 2) Exercises on Mplus involving different regressions and estimators. Day 3) Moderation
models Day 4) Tradition Mediation (with multiple mediators and serial mediators) Day 5) Potential
outcome approach (counterfactually defined causal effects) Important: Mplus version 8.0 version will be
used and NO previous knowledge of such software is required. The demo might be downloaded at
