GENERAL

Teacher MARVELOUS SAINT P. JUMANOY Learning Area

CHEMISTRY 1
Teaching Dates and
Quarter FIRST
Time

I. General Objectives
Content Standard

The learners demonstrate an understanding of measurement and the difference

between accuracy and precision.

Performance Standards
The learners shall be able to:
1. Discuss the need and describe the result of a measurement, in general;
2. Differentiate between the accuracy and precision of a measurement;
3. Carry out a measurement and report the results correctly.

Specific Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners:
1. Differentiate between precision and accuracy (STEM_GC11MT-Ib-13);
2. Describe how to carry out measurements of length, mass, and volume; and
3. Value the need of measurements in daily life.

II. Subject Matter

Topic:
“MEASUREMENTS: Accuracy and Precision”
Materials:
Projector, Computer, Beaker, Balance, Erlenmeyer flasks, Graduated Cylinder,
Alternative Science Equipment
Resources:
(1) Chang, R. & Goldsby, K. (2016). Chemistry. (12th ed.). New York:
McGraw-Hill.

(2) Teaching Guide for Senior High School GENERAL CHEMISTRY 1

SPECIALIZED SUBJECT | ACADEMIC STEM Dep.Ed.

III. Procedure
A. Preliminaries: (5min.)
o Prayer
o Attendance
o Review
1. Post this table on the board and ask Students to supply the units for each property.
o Motivation (7 minutes)
1. Present to two plastic bottles containing different amounts of water, and ask the
learners to describe and differentiate the two objects. Make them realize the need to
use a number (the volume of the water content or the weight of the bottles and their
contents) to describe the objects more clearly and to differentiate them.

2. Call two learners separately. Ask each one to measure the length of a table without
using a ruler, meter stick, or tape measure. Make them write their measurements on the
board (Number, unit: e.g., 3 hand spans).

4. Ask the class to compare the results and explain for differences or similarities. Ask
them to answer the question: Why is there a need to use a common unit for
measurement?

B. Lesson Proper:

INTRODUCTION (3 minutes)
1. Introduce the following learning objectives using the suggested protocol (Read-
aloud):
 I can describe accuracy
 I can describe precision
 I can calculate percent error

INSTRUCTION (30 minutes) (4 A’s)

Activity 1:
.
- Ask learners to group into 6. Tell them to measure the liquid chemicals in the
Containers.
- These liquid chemical is divided in 6 containers with random amount.
- The containers will move clockwise and every group should measure the liquids
properly in six rounds to come up to expected total amount.
- They will write their measured value in this table:
Group A B C D E F
1
2
3
4
5
6
Activity 2:

12. In a Manila paper or Bond paper, every group should draw a Number line-
measurement of a Graduated Cylinder and put dots on it based on the results of the
activity.
- Group 1 = Container A
- Group 2 = Container B
- Group 3 = Container C
- Group 4 = Container D
- Group 5 = Container E
- Group 6 = Container F

Example:

Analysis:
- When the groups have completed the measurements and recorded their results
on the table, ask them to answer the question: How many significant figures did
you use in reporting your measurements?
- Ask them to examine the results of the measurements that they made on the
liquids and ask the following questions:
a. Are the results of each measurement close to each other?
b. Are the results of each measurement close to the true value?
c. Were the measurements accurate or precise?

Abstraction:
In chemistry, the meanings of accuracy and precision are quite different.
• Accuracy is a measure of how close a measurement comes to the actual
or true value of whatever is measured.
• Precision is a measure of how close a series of measurements are to one
another, irrespective of the actual value.
• There is a difference between the accepted value, which is the correct
value for the measurement based on reliable references, and the
experimental value, the value measured in the lab.
• The difference between the experimental value and the accepted value is
called the error

Application: (5min.)
- The class will be regrouped into 3. Every group will make a maximum of 2min.
creative presentation of how Measurements is needed in our daily life. It can be a
rap, song, poetry, role play.

EVALUATION (Take home Evaluation)

1. Assign them to read the labels of some canned or bottled goods in the kitchen, and
report the mass or volume of the contents.
2. Let them classify the following measurement data as high precision or low precision:
a. Volume of a liquid: 11.0 cm3, 11.3 cm3, 10.9 cm3, 11.1 cm3
b. Mass of a solid: 25.0 g, 23.0 g, 20.0 g, and 28.0 g

ASSIGNMENT:

Bring the following materials next meeting:

 Soda
 Cooking oil
 Kerosene
