 CHAPTER I

Introduction

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) basically is a research intensive

university in Malaysia. It hasn’t an integrated campus, in the island of Penang is
for the main campus, in Nibong Tebal is for engineering campus, and in Kelantan
is for health campus complete to the hospital. Dentistry program which is called
by Pusat Pengajian Sains Pergigian (PPSG) was found on October 1998, and
Medical program which is called by Pusat Pengajian Sains Perubatan (PPSP) have
been founded on the early of 1990. The health faculty is built up on the 72,84 HA
of area.

The facilities provided are to help and support the students in terms of
research is already good enough. Such as, craniofacial science laboratory,
biomaterials laboratory, oral pathology laboratory, dental technology laboratory
including prosthetics, orthodontics, ceramic, and maxillofacial, digital laboratory,
and oral science gallery. The availability of good facilities, hopefully the vision
and mission of PPSG can be achieved.

In Universiti Sains Malaysia, all students at least needs 5 years to finish

undergraduate education and 4 years for postgraduate education. There are 3
phase for undergraduate students. First phase is for the first year students, they
will learn about the basic of medical and dental sciences. Second phase is for the
second year students, they will learn about pre-clinical dental and medical
sciences and for the third year students, they will learn about dental and medical
clinical sciences. The last phase is for the fourth and fifth year students, they will
learn about dental clinical sciences.

At the beginning of dental clinic, USM has two dental chair only on
around 20 patients per day. Two years later, there was an increasing of demand
for dental services, so the dental clinic was moved from USM hospital to the
separated building. The services is more effective provided by general practice
dentist, specialist dentist, dental hygiene, and dental student. As the quality
improves, the amount of patient is relatively increase among 90-200 patients per
day. In 26th December 2007, the Dental Operation Theatre (OT) began operation
with 4 cases done under local anesthesia. Nowadays, a lot of complex cases also
handled by the doctor under general anesthesia.
 CHAPTER II

THE ACTIVITY

A. Date : Monday, 22th October 2018

Place : Adi Sucipto International Airport
Activities :
The flight schedule to Kuala Lumpur is at 11.55 WIB. We arrived
at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on time, then waiting for the next
flight to Kota Bharu at 20.00. Finally around at 21.00 we arrived at Kota
Bharu, fortunately some staff from USM have been waiting and took us to the
hotel. We should sleep as soon as possible because the day after is our first
day of elective program.

B. Date : Tuesday, 23th October 2018

Place : PPSG
Activities :
The agenda started at 8.30 which was the opening of elective
program. We were welcomed by Dr. Khairul Bariah, Cik Amin and Kak
Muchi. Dr. Khairul told us about UMS especially for dentistry and also she
introduced Cik Amin and Kak Muchi as our sister during in Kelantan. After
registration and administration done, we took a rest at 12.45 until 14.30. We
had lunch at the campus café and then went to pray. During the resting time,
all of activity was stop and only surau and café seems crowded.
After that, the agenda is campus tour. So, Health campus of
Universiti Sains Malaysia has 3 main buildings, they were Pusat Pengajian
Sains Perubatan (PPSP), Pusat Pengajian Sains Pergigian (PPSG), and Pusat
Pengajian Sains Kesihatan (PPSK). In dental building, there are 3 clinics,
such as Klinik Pakar Pergigian (KPP) is used by the specialist dentist to
handle complex cases, Klinik Rawat Keluarga (KRK) is used by general
practice dentist to handle cases based on their competence, and poly D is used
by the general practice dentist who are being a specialist. To being a doctor,
 all undergraduate students at least needs 5 years to finish the education and 4
years for postgraduate education. Then we visited the science gallery
somewhere like a little museum for the dental technology such as the old
dental chair, hand pieces and burs.

C. Date : Wednesday, 24th October 2018

Place : Polyclinic
Activity :

The activity started at 8.30 then we were divided into some groups
to observed the cases based on the clinic. In the KRK clinic, I and my friend
met a doctor who handled case with refernce. There are some cases, like
patient with kemotherapy doing some of restoration on her tooth. Then the
patient with history of steven johnson syndrome. The doctor said, a lot of
ulcer on her mouth and his lips is bleeding everyday . We observed in KRK
until 12.45 then took a rest. After that, we were going to KPP to observe
combined cleft palate.

D. Date : Thursday, 25th October 2018

Place : Auditorium
Activity :
The activity started at 8.30 then we were going to auditorium for
joined debate on denture design with 5 year student. The topic is whats better
between denture with acrylic or denture with cobalt chrome until 12.45 then
took a rest. After that, we were go to bilik rawat for observe prosthodontic
patient.
E. Date : Friday, 26th October 2018
Place : Aeon Mall
Activity :
Friday is a holiday for Kelantan so there was no activity at campus. We
decided to go to Aeon mall at 14.30 by grab taxi. So we were enjoyed
shopping.

F. Date : Saturday, 27th October 2018

Place : Kota Bharu
Activity :
The agenda for Saturday was tour around kota bharu with USM
student. First, were going to kopitiam kita cafe for breakfast, Than we were
going to the market in kelantan. Just forget the name but the price is cheap
bcs its free of beacukai. After that we were going to istana jahar muzium adat
istiadat, there we had lunch and went to pray in surau. The last destination,
we were going to Nami Senok Beach.

G. Date : Sunday, 28th October 2018

Place : Maxillofacial Clinic
Activity :

The agenda started at 8.30 we were divided into some groups to

observed the cases based on the clinic. The first case is ewing sarcoma, ewing
sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in bones or in the soft tissue
around the bones. This cancer most often begins in the long bones of the
pelvis, legs or arms, but it can occur in any bone. We observed in
maxillofacial clinic until 12.45. The agenda is early finish at 12.45 because
the next agenda canceled.
H. Date : Monday, 29th October 2018
Place : Pusat Pengajian Sains Pergigian
Activity :
The agenda started at 9.15 we were divided into some groups to
visited poly. There are poly A, B and C. So i and my friends as a group 2
were visited poly C to observed pediatric case. The patient would be
extraction by the fifth year student. Then, we took a rest at 12.45. After that
we go to back to poly, but group 2 moved to poly B for observed endodontic
case until 15.30.

I. Date : Tuesday, 30 October 2018

Place : Pusat Pengajian Sains Pergigian
Activity :
Tuesday, the agenda started at 9.15. We back to the poly and i and
my friends groups 2 visited poly A for observed prosthodontic case. The
cases almost patient with completed denture. The next agenda started at
14.30. We go to KPP clinic for observed implant cases but no patient in this
day.

J. Date : Wednesday, 31 October 2018

Place : HUSM
Activity :
Started at 9.15, the agenda is grand ward round. So we just go
around the hospital of USM to observed some cases there. First case is breast
carcinoma, the the second case is hands fraktur by accident, and the last case
is eyes fraktur by accident. At 12.45 we were go to bilik persidangan to
farewell ceremony by gave the certificate and took a picture together. After
that we started again at 14.30 to observed minor oral surgery in KPP clinic.
K. Date : Thursday, 1st November 2018
Place : Pusat Pengajian Sains Pergigian
Activity :
So this is the last day for observed in USM. The first agenda is
seminar in Cleft palate and craniofacial deformity at 9.15 until 12.00. And
this is special day because Dr. Ramizu had been prepared for nasi kerabu for
us. We thought that it was the best nasi kerabu ever since we were in there.
After enjoyed the foods we took a picture together and go back to the hotel.
At 20.00 we were go to KL by bus prepared IDPQ.

L. Date : Saturday, 3rd November 2018

Place : Balai Ungku Aziz
Activity :
We were joined for International Dental Physiolgy Quiz in
University of Malaya on this day. So some of us were joined this quiz. But
we are not lucky yet on this quiz. Then we just continued our tour in KL.
 CHAPTER III

Thank you for having this elective program because there were a lot of new
experiences we got and it was very useful to us to improve our knowledge. The
benefits that we got from the elective program in University Sains Malaysia such
as, we has many new friends in there, I also know some cases in there. Then I met
a doctor and knew his effort to handle the patient with so many cases it was my
very first chance to see such a thing.
The benefit which can be applied in Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta
is how they appreciate the time. Because most of the them are rarely too late, in
almost of activities. Then, I think most of them are better in English than us
because they used to speak in English, especially in the lecture. So I think that we
should improve our English to open our mind widely. The differences between
UMS and UMY are the first is system of learning, USM pre-clinic student only 2
year and clinical student are 3 year. Then the facilitiy, i think USM is the best
campus i ever seen because everthing there.
