Literary Analysis 2:

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as an Adaptation of Enemy of the People

I. Both stories’ main conflicts were driven by the discussion on what particular action or

decision the community should make regarding their current situation.

a. The gravity of the issues in the Enemy of the People were parallel to the situation

in Harry Potter. The decision of whether or not the Springs should be rehabilitated

in Enemy of the People also mirrored whether or not the preparation for Lord

Voldemort’s return should be done in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

i. Kirsten Springs, upon which the town relied heavily, was found to be

polluted.

ii. Supposedly, Lord Voldemort, the cause of numerous deaths, had returned

to the Wizarding World again.

b. There are two sides in both stories that contradict each other.

i. Peter Stockmann, the mayor of the town who holds authority, refused to

believe the findings of Dr. Thomas Stockmann and decided against

publishing the news article that talks about the pollution in the Springs.
ii. Dr. Dolores Umbridge, the High Inquisitorq in Hogwarts who represents

the Ministry of Magic, refused to believe the statements of Harry Potter and

encouraged everyone to do the same and disregard his claims about the

return of Voldemaort.

c. There was a medium used to relay information, that influences the stance of the

people in the community.

i. The Daily Prophet was used to publish stories about “The Boy Who Lived”

as a hero and to proclaim his brilliance and his skill as a wizard. Similarly,

The Daily Messenger was used to publish the ideas and stories of Dr.

Stockmann.

ii. When Dr. Stockmann and Harry Potter were starting to be questioned by

the officials, the opinions of the people behind the media regarding said

characters were altered.

II. The characters and their beliefs in the stories mirrored one another.

a. Thomas Stockmann found that Kirsten Springs was polluted and wanted to inform

the people in order to keep them safe. He wanted to solve this problem by having

the Springs rehabilitated. Likewise, Harry Potter strongly believed that Lord

Voldemort had returned, putting everyone’s lives in danger. Harry then searched

for answers and aimed to prepare for Voldemort’s coming.

i. Both characters stood for the truth and the people’s safety.

ii. Both characters were perceived to be liars and were turned against.

b. Peter Stockmann did not want to trust the findings of the Dr., insisted there was no

need to fix anything and persuaded everyone to believe him, just as Dolores
Umbridge did not want to believe in Harry Potter’s warnings, turned against the

student and told everyone to do the same.

i. Both held high positions in their communities and possessed great power.

ii. Both prioritized the image of their community rather than facing the

possibility of danger.

c. Captain Horster served as a good soul to Dr. Stockmann just as Dumbledore was to

Harry Potter.

i. Captain Horster took the Stockmann’s in when no one else welcomed them

and got fired from his job.

ii. Dumbledore aided Harry Potter when he was looking for answers against

Voldemort and was stripped of his title as Headmaster of Hogwarts.

d. Mrs. Stockmann was an influence to Dr. Stockmann just as how Sirius Black was

to Harry Potter.

i. Both characters have this strong influence due to their immediate

relationships with the main characters – Mrs. Stockmann as the wife of Dr.

Stockmann and Sirius Black as the godfather of Harry.

ii. Both characters encouraged practicality in the main characters – Mrs.

Stockmann always reminded her husband to think of the consequences his

actions would have, especially on their family, just like how Sirius Black

tells Harry to never be rash with his decisions, especially for the benefit of

the other students.

iii. Ultimately, both characters were sources of support for the main characters.

e. Dr. Stockmann’s and Harry Potter’s decisions would affect a number of people.
i. Three children and a wife relied on Dr. Stockmann, which did not allow him

to make decisions so rashly.

ii. Dumbledore’s Army believed and depended on Harry Potter telling the truth

and preparing them for what is to come, therefore, he had to be meticulous

with his actions.
