FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Training in accessibility provided by industry leaders, made possible by Wolf Trap grant
Leesburg, VA, March 18, 2019 – The award-winning theatre program at Tuscarora High School
seeks to have its theatre students learn how to make performances more accessible for patrons with
disabilities.
With the generous award of a $5 k grant from the Wolf Trap Foundation, Director Justin Daniel
invited Mr. Scott Turner of Imagination Stage to train students in the process of planning and im-
plementing accessible performances. Student leaders learned how to plan accommodations such as
reduced stimuli, modification of traditional audience seating, transportation to the venue, and other
means, for the May 4 matinee (11 A.M.) performance of “Seussical” (Flaherty/Ahrens, presented
by MTI).
Mr. Daniel has served as Director since Tuscarora opened in 2010. He has been nominated as a
leading educator for his contributions towards Special Education. The Theatre Department students
have won recent awards in Cappies (performance & technical), Virginia Thespian Festival
(performance & technical), and Special Education (production/performance). His team of Odyssey
Of The Mind recently placed 7th in Worlds. The department’s “One To The World” programs have
included building custom Halloween costumes to accommodate the needs of youth using wheel-
chairs, and receptions/performances for community groups, centering around themes of inclusion
and justice. Mr. Daniel aims to build on the successful outreach efforts of local arts groups, such as
LYSO (Loudoun Youth Symphony Orchestra), RRPA (Rock Ridge Performing Arts), VSA (Very
Special Arts), and A Place to Be. Always aiming to be inclusive on stage, back stage, and in the au-
dience, Mr. Daniel states he is, “extremely grateful to the Wolf Trap Foundation for giving Tusca-
rora H.S. the chance to make an impact in our community!”
