TITLE: To study the characteristics of PTC Thermistor and NTC Thermistor

Objective:

 To plot the characteristics of thermistor.

 to know about temperature coefficient.

Apparatus required:
 power supply
 multimeter
 Dc circuit analysis

Theory:
Thermistors are temperature sensitive resistors that have a greater
than normal change in resistance value when the temperature
changes. The two basic types of thermistors generally available
today are;
NTC thermistors are ceramic semiconductors that have a
high Negative Temperature Coefficient of resistance. NTC
thermistors decrease in resistance as the temperature increases. Its
application; NTC thermistors can be used for temperature control
(off/on) using a minimum amount of circuitry.

PTC thermistors are Positive Temperature Coefficient

resistors generally made of polycrystalline ceramic materials that
have a high positive temperature coefficient, which increases in
resistance as the temperature increases. Its application; PTC
thermistors are used in electronic ballast systems as a time delay
element when the circuit is energized

Typically, NTC or PTC thermistors do not increase

or decrease in resistance with temperature in a linear
fashion. The tables aside show several examples of
nonlinear resistance-temperature curves. Developed
recently was a Vishay Dale linear PTC thermistor that has
a linear resistance temperature relationship.
Procedure:
 first of all, dc analysis circuit was connected with multimeter and power supply.
 Different readings were taken for PTC and NTC by keeping it heated up to 1 min.
 Six different readings were taken by repeating the step’2’.

OBSERAVTION AND CALCULATION:

Current density (J)= 760 a/m2

Time(t) = 60s

For PTC

Applied voltage(v) Resistance(kr) Current(i)=v/r Heat produced(h)= {i2rt}/j

0 2.4 0 0
2 2.5 8.0*10-3 1.4*10-4
4 2.6 1.6*10-3 4.8*10-4
6 2.9 2.3*10-3 9.8*10-4
8 3.5 1.7*10-3 14.7*10-4
10 4.3 2.3*10-3 18.3*10-4
For NTC:

Applied voltage(v) Resistance(kr) Current(i)=v/r Heat produced(h)= {i2rt}/j

0 362 0 0
2 352 5.7*10-3 9*10-4
4 343 11.7*10-3 37.1*10-4
6 331 18.1*10-3 85.6*10-4
8 313 25.6*10-3 161.9*10-4
10 308 32.5*10-3 256.8*10-4

Conclusion:

Characteristics of PTC and NTC was studied and shown through graph.
