Timeline of The First Voyage Around the World

1517  Ferdinand Magellan left for Spain after a quarrel with King Manuel of Spain
 Magellan arrived in Seville on October 20
1518  Magellan signed an agreement with King Charles I of Spain
1519  First voyage of Magellan
 Magellan sailed with 5 Ships with 270 crewmembers including Enrique, a slave
boy Magellan took
 Trinidad which was led by Magellan and has 55 crewmembers.
 San Antonio which was led by Juan de Cartagena and has 60 crewmembers.
 Conception which was led by Gaspar de Quesada and has 45 crewmembers.
 Victoria which was led by Luis de Mendoza and has 43 crewmembers.
 Santiago which was led by Juan Serrano and has 32 crewmembers.
 On September 20, Magellan set sail.
 On December 6, Magellan sighted South America.
 On December 13, Magellan arrived in Rio de Janeiro and stayed until
Christmas
1520  Around February to March, a winter storm forced Magellan to camp at Puerto
de San Julian
 A mutiny against Magellan occurred which was led by officers that thought
Magellan would lead them to death.
 First Officer was killed by a loyal follower as an ordered by Magellan.
 Second Officer was executed by Magellan.
 Third Officer was pardoned by Magellan.
 Two Officers were left on an island.
 Around April, the Santiago ship wrecked.
 Around November, the San Antonio ship deserted and sailed back.
 On November 28, Magellan found a 350-mile strait going to the Pacific Ocean
known as “Mar Pacifico”, meaning peaceful ocean.
 Due to the unexpected size of the ocean, a famine occurred, and 19 died due
to scurvy and men were forced to eat rats and drink putrid water.
1521  After 99 days at sea, Magellan found Guam at around March which was named
“Landrones”.
 On March 16, the natives of Guam stole a boat and a war erupted prompting
Magellan to leave.
 After a week, Magellan reached the Philippines.
 Magellan used Enrique as a translator; the Chief of Cebu, Rajah Humabon and
Magellan came to an agreement
 Rajah Humabon and the rest were baptized around April.
 On April 26, Magellan established friendship with Datu Zula; the Datu proposed
to send one of his sons to bring two live goats as presents to Magellan as a
sign of his loyalty. However, this action was stopped by Datu Lapu-Lapu and
barred Datu Zula taking such an act.
 Datu Zula, unable to send his presents because of Lapu-Lapu’s intervention,
bid Magellan to send a boatload of men so he could fight Lapu-Lapu. Magellan,
in lieu of one, send 3 boatloads which contains 60 men to personally lead the
attack.
 During April 27, the Battle of Mactan occurred where Magellan and his men
fought against Datu Lapu-Lapu, where Magellan died.
 Details about the Battle of Mactan:
 Magellan crossed to Mactan with 60 people including himself.
 Magellan was overpowered by Lapu-Lapu’s 1500 soldiers.
 Magellan was killed by a spear through his ribs and an arrow in his foot.
 Some crewmembers said that Enrique died during the Battle of Mactan yet
he was alive and well.
 Rajah Humabon invited the Spaniards to a feast
 Details about the feast:
 According to Juan Serrano, the sole survivor, Enrique told the chief that
they’ll be betrayed by the Spaniards, prompting the Filipinos to kill the
Spaniards.
 Duarte Barbosa became the captain after Magellan and died during the
feast.
 Rajah Humabon and Enrique made an agreement that they can get the
wealth of Magellan by killing them, thus the plan to have a feast occurred.
 Around May, Conception was burned and abandoned due to the low number
of crewmembers, and disable the natives to use the ship.
 Around November, the crew traveled to Brunei to ask the Court of Muslim for
assistance to reach Maluku. The crew reached Maluku in Indonesia, and traded
their goods and items for spices.
 Trinidad was leaking and was left for repair but later captured by the
Portuguese.
1522  Around March, Victoria traveled back to Spain under Juan Sebastian Elcano.
 Around April, Victoria crossed the Indian Ocean
 Around May to July, Victoria kept on travelling.
 Around August, Victoria stopped at Cape Verde to supply again.
 On September 18, Victoria arrived at Seville, Spain with only 18 people out of
270.
