An important method of waste management is the prevention of waste material being created

also known as WASTE REDUCTION.

There are several methods to reduce waste:
1. LANDFILLS are used for waste management purposes, such as the temporary storage
etc. for proper disposal of waste.
2. INCINERATION; It converts waste materials into heat, gas, steam and ash
3. To prevent organic waste methods like composting and digestion processes help to
decompose waste.
4. Energy recovery from waste is the conversion of non-recyclable waste materials into
usable heat, electricity or fuel through a variety of processes including combustion,
gasification, pyrolyzation, anaerobic digestion and landfill gas recovery .
5. Waste can be reduced by its conversion into fuels. Pyrolysis is one such method to
convert many types of domestic and industrial residues into a recovered fuel.
6. E-waste generated from the industries like circuit boards, computers, metals etc. can be
recycled to useful products for horticulture and to cover paths , walkways or arena
surfaces. Implementing agencies shall ensure that minimization, storage , treatment and
disposal of waste from the production and use of electrical and electronic equipment
are addressed in an environmentally sound and safe manner. Implementing proper
collection, treatment and safe disposal of end of life electrical and electronic
equipments.
7. Sewage sludge is produced by waste water treatment processes. To dispose sewage
sludge incinerators, composting and landfills are used.
8. Waste can be prevented by following the 3R’s
9. Provide waste segregation and reduction mechanisms.
10. Implementing agencies shall prevent manufacturing of products with the potential to
generate hazardous waste.
11. For proper waste management , all persons shall segregate, reduce, reuse, and recycle
waste.
12. Avoid littering.
13. All persons shall cooperate with the implementing agencies in their activities for waste
reduction by restricting their waste generation, using recycled products or otherwise
contributing towards recycling and reuse of waste and segregation of waste prior to its
disposal.
14. All persons shall fulfill their civic responsibility and good ethics in waste management.
15. Waste can be prevented by adopting waste management plans, including plans for
private business and industry to undertake reduction of waste generation and disposal ,
sach as through mandatory segregation of waste.
16. Impose restrictions on littering and disposal of wastes on land, air and water bodies.

SOLUTIONS :
1. The urine diverting dry toilets and biogas latrines as possible good solutions for a
specific urban slum.
2. The sanitation workers should be paid more as they contribute in waste
management majorly.
3. Proper supply of water can improve sanitation by providing public taps or
standpipes, tube wells or boreholes, protected dug well, protected springs and
rainwater collection.
4. New methods to get adequate amount of water is to use nearby sources of water by
use of Distillation, Reverse osmosis , Forward osmosis, Electrodialysis etc.
5. Create public and political awareness by use of communication techniques.
6. Reduce the amount of waste you produce, as this is the best way to help
environment.
7. Reusing helps to prevent waste. Think of ways you could reuse something.
8. Recycling enables the materials you throw away to b used again by making them
into new products.
9. Avoid, eliminate or substitute the use of products or unnecessary packaging that
generate waste.
10. Treat and dispose waste to avoid harm to human health.
11. Treat and dispose waste to reduce and eliminate harms to the environment.
12. Establish standards and guidelines for disposal of waste , including segregation
requirements of wastes at source.
13. A proper drainage system should be implemented to prevent plastics, E-waste
medical waste to directly enter the water bodies.
