POWER SYSTEM ANALYSIS MID-II QUESTION BANK

III year / B.Tech / EEE / A-Section

SET-1

1. A generating station has three alternators of 3MVA, 2.5 MVA, and 2 MVA with reactance of 0.07, 0.05 and 0.04 p.u. The circuit breakers are rated at 150 MVA. It is indented to extend the system by a supply from a grid via transformer of rating 7.5MVA with 0.07 p.u reactance. Determine the reactance necessary to protect the switch gear if the bus bar voltage is 3.3kv. [10M] [BTL-5] [PI-2.1.2] [C322.4]

2. Derive for the fault current when a line to line fault occurs at the terminals of an unloaded generator. [10M] [BTL-5] [PI-2.4.4] [C322.5]

3. Discuss and derive any one of the methods of improving steady state and transient state stability. [10M] [BTL-4] [PI-2.4.4] [C322.6]

SET-2

1. There are two generating stations each which as estimated short circuit kVA of 5000 kVA and 6000 kVA respectively. Power is generated at 9 kV. If these two stations are interconnected through a reactor with a reactance of 0.3 ohms, what will be the short circuit kVA at each station? [10M] [BTL-5] [PI-2.1.2] [C322.4]

2. Derive and prove that a line to ground fault at the terminals for an alternator with solidly grounded neutral is more severe than a three phase fault. [10M] [BTL-5] [PI-2.4.4] [C322.5]

3. State and explain equal area criterion. How do you apply equal area criterion to find maximum additional load. [10M] [BTL-4] [PI-2.4.2] [C322.6]

SET-3

1. There are two generating stations each which an estimated short circuit KVA of 500,000 KVA and 600,000 KVA. Power is generated at 11 KV. If these two stations are interconnected through a reactor with a reactance of 0.4 ohm, what will be the short circuit KVA at each station? [10M] [BTL-5] [PI-2.1.2] [C322.4]

2. Derive an expression for the positive sequence current Ia1 of an unloaded generator when it is subjected to a double line to ground fault. [10M] [BTL-5] [PI-2.4.4] [C322.5]

3. What is meant by swing curve and how is it derived? What information is supplied by it? [10M] [BTL-4] [PI-2.4.2] [C322.6]

SET-4

1. Explain the short circuit model of a synchronous machine under short circuit conditions [10M] [BTL-5] [PI-2.4.2] [C322.4]

2. An earth fault occurs on one conductor of a 3-conductor cable supplied by a 10MVA, 3 phase alternator with neutral earthed. The alternator has positive, negative, and zero sequence impedance of (0.5+j4.7), (0.2+j0.6) and j0.43Ω per phase. The corresponding line to neutral values for the cable up to the fault positions are (0.36+j0.25), (0.36+j0.25) and (2.5+j0.5). Determine a) fault current b) sequence components of each line. [10M] [BTL-5] [PI-2.1.2] [C322.5]

3. Write the swing equation describing the rotor dynamics of a synchronous machine connected to infinite bus through a double circuit transmission line [10M] [BTL-4] [PI-2.4.4] [C322.6]
