For we are God's masterpiece,

He created us anew
In Christ Jesus so that we can do
The good things He planned for us long ago
The good, good things He planned long ago

I can be kind, and show I care

Because You direct me, Lord; You direct me, Lord
I can be confident, and I can be content
Because You love me so,
Courageously I'll go, for I know

Gotta believe, gotta believe that God can do

Amazing things in me and you
Gotta believe, gotta believe that God can do
Amazing things in me and you
And you, and you, and you

THE ACT OF CONSECRATION

(Adapted from the Covenant Book of Worship)

Bishop: As beloved children of God, we are

gathered here in Christ’s presence to consecrate
you for the ministry of Christian Education
through the Vacation Church School. Just as
Christ taught as he walked through life you are
called to do the same. The settings for Jesus
were varied. From synagogue and temple, to
streets, boats, hillsides, plains, rivers and homes.
Jesus invested in the lives of his followers. As
brothers and sisters chosen to serve as VCS
Teachers, you are called to follow Christ’s model
to journey through life together with those you
are mentoring. It is both a great honor and a
high responsibility to serve Jesus Christ through
the teaching of children during VCS 2019. I
charge you, therefore, to be faithful in your
ministry to serve as teachers, that God may be

14 VCS 2019 Teachers’ Training

glorified, and those whose lives you touch may
grow closer to God, deeper in Christ, and more
receptive to the Spirit.

Do you promise to follow

Christ’s model to faithfully minister
to those you have been called to serve?
(If this is your promise, please answer, “I do”)

Do you promise to continue to faithfully seek

to grow deeper in your own faith?
(If this is your promise, please answer, “I do”)

Do you promise to support, pray for,

encourage, and minister
alongside each other as servant leaders?
(If this is your promise, please answer, “I do”)

Pastor: Gracious God, we thank you for the call

you have extended to those who stand before
you today. May they continually feel the support
and encouragement of the church, their family
and friends. We humbly ask that they would
grow deeper in wisdom, knowledge,
understanding and discernment. May they feel
the gentle touch of your loving Spirit within their
hearts and may their deepest desire be to truly
know you with heart, soul and mind. Help them,
we pray, to read and pray through your word
day by day and knowing you will help them to
understand it and to live it out daily. Help them
to be your faithful disciples in their relationships

with others and to love others in the same way
you love them. And help them we pray, to put
you first, every moment of their lives and in
every relationship, every action, and every act of
worship, knowing that you are with them, that
you love them and desire that they should grow
closer to you day by day. Amen

Pastor: In the presence of God and this gathered

body, I thankfully and joyfully declare that you
are consecrated to the ministry of Christ as VCS
2019 servant leaders. Go and minister with God’s
blessing.

HYMN OF PREPARATION

“Sing Alleluia to the Lord” TFWS 2258

Sing Alleluia to the Lord; Sing Alleluia to the Lord.
Sing Alleluia, sing Alleluia,
Sing Alleluia to the Lord (repeat)

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

Pastor: Let us lift up our hearts.
Congregation: We lift them to the Lord.
Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
Congregation: It is right to give our thanks and
praise.

16 VCS 2019 Teachers’ Training

Pastor: It is indeed right to give you our thanks
and praise, O God, for You have sent us bread
from heaven to give life to the whole world.
You are above all and through all and in all,
and by your word all things were created. You
fed your people with manna from heaven, and
even when they defied You, if they turned from
their callous ways, You fed them again with
your wisdom and truth.
Pastor: In your Son, Jesus Christ, You have offered
yourself to us as the bread of life that we might
be nourished and built up as one body in the
bond of peace. Though he was murdered by
those he fought to save, You raised him from
the depths of the earth to fill the whole
universe with his gifts and baptize all things
into one body, held together by one spirit,
under one Lord.
Pastor: We thank you for the mystery of your
presence, O God, and for the wonder of your
amazing grace, which draws and holds us
close to you. And, we thank you for Jesus the
Christ, whom you sent:
Congregation: …to preach good news to the
poor, set the captives free, and bring sight to
the blind… Who healed the sick, fed the
hungry, and ate with sinners.
Pastor: Jesus gave birth to the Church through his
suffering, death, and resurrection.
Congregation: Jesus delivers us from our slavery
to sin and death by his real presence, today.
Pastor: Jesus makes with us a New Covenant of

VCS 2019 Teachers’ Training 17

love, mercy, and grace. (LET US PRAY) Pour out
your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on
these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be
for us the body and blood of Christ, that we
may be for the world the body of Christ,
redeemed by his blood. By your Spirit make us
one with Christ, one with each other, and one
in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes
in final victory and we feast at his heavenly
banquet.
Pastor: By Christ!
Congregation: With Christ and in Christ!
Pastor: In the unity of the Holy Spirit!
ALL: All honor and glory is yours, almighty God,
now and forever! Amen!

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

Pastor
Pastor - We, though we are many, are one body,
for we all partake of the one loaf. The bread
which we break, it is a means of sharing in the
body of Christ. And the cup over which we give
thanks, it is a means of sharing in the outpoured
blood of Christ. Come now to the table of the
Lord.

PARTAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE CUP

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING All
ALL - We have come together as one: One
people, gathered in the name of the one God;
One community, giving praise and honor to the
Righteous One; One body and one Spirit, called
to the hope of one calling, one Lord, one faith,
one baptism, one God and Father of all who is
above all and through all and in all. Now, in the
name of the Three-in-One, we act as one. One
people, giving witness to the power of One.

DEDICATION HYMN

Warring factions and despair,
Who will lift the olive branches?
Who will light the flame of care?

BIBLIO-THEOLOGICAL
OVERVIEW

THEREFORE GO: A RETROSPECT

Matthew 28:19-20

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,

baptizing them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe
all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always,
to the end of the age.”

VCS 2019 Teachers’ Training 21

(poreuthentes oun mathēteusate panta ethnē
baptizontes onoma patros uiou agiou pneumatos
didaskontes tērein panta eneteilamēn idou
eimi pasas eōs sunteleias aiōnos)

In the Greek, the command appears in a parti-

cipial form, πορευθέντες οὖν, poreuthentes oun,
lit., go therefore. As a participle, it functions as a
verbal adjective. In this case, the participle is
translated as a finite verb with a noun or pro-
noun as its subject, i.e., you (second person plu-
ral).

Implication: Since it is not a “full” or regular verb,

the weight it carries is not that strong in the
Greek syntax of Matthew 28.19. It is merely inci-
dental in the performance of the next action
word, which appeared as a regular (aorist) verb,
μαθητεύσατε, matheyteusate, lit., you instruct.

The command to instruct or make disciples car-

ries the full weight of The Great Commission.
The meaning of this Greek verb is further clari-
fied by the two succeeding participles:
βαπτίζοντες, baptizontes, lit., baptizing (them),
and διδάσκοντες, didaskontes, lit., teaching
(them)

The commission to disciple then depends on the

act of going out from your present location to
where all the nations are located.

22 VCS 2019 Teachers’ Training

Thus, the VCS themes for the quadrennium:

2017: Tell the Good News

The proclaiming and teaching component

2018: Hear and Obey

The call to obedience
Hear and obey is derived from the same
Greek root word, akouw, lit. to hear and
upakouw, lit., to obey

2019: Grow As Disciples of Jesus

The “maturing component”
The challenge is to move beyond hearing
and obeying into the maturing of the dis-
ciples’ knowledge, commitment, faith and
practice shaped by the Lord Jesus Christ’s
teaching. Discipleship becomes a way of
life

WHAT DOES IT MEAN

TO BE JESUS’ DISCIPLES?
Matheytes (disciple of Jesus)—To be a disciple of
Jesus Christ is to be a learner. (Mat. 5.1-2; 10.24)

What is it to learn as disciples?

VCS 2019 Teachers’ Training 23

Self-sacrifice (Mark 8.34; Luke 14.27)
• Self-denial
• Death of the Self
• Obedience to the Lord

Jesus’ Yoke (Matthew 11.28-30)

• Jesus’ invitation of inner peace and rest
• The exhortation to learn from Jesus
• Jesus’ yoke is light
The New Commandment (John 13.34-35)
• Love one another
• Love for the other is the type that Jesus
demonstrated
• Love is the true mark of discipleship

Advice for Prospective Disciples (Luke 9,14)

• Calculate the cost of discipleship
• Decide if you can follow the demand of
Jesus
• Once you commit to follow, do not look
back!

HOW TO GROW
AS DISCIPLES OF JESUS
Maturity in discipleship is a process
• The two-stage process in discipleship
(Mark 8.22-25; Mark 8.31-33)—can
barely see; can see everything clearly

24 VCS 2019 Teachers’ Training

Maturity in discipleship is borne out of testing
and trials
• Faith in times of crisis (Matthew 8.23-26)

Maturity in discipleship calls or necessitates a

perspectival change (Matthew 19.20-22 vs.
Luke 19.5-8)
• Rich man in Gospel of Matthew
• Zacchaeus’ experience

Maturity in discipleship is the ability to accept

both the success and the failures of our disci-
pleship task and effort (Luke 5.4-8)
• Caught nothing (vs.5). A time of failure.
• Caught such a large number of fish
(vs.6). A time of immense success.
• Immense success may, however, pose a
big problem.

Maturity in discipleship is “travelling light”

• Priority of the heart. (Matthew 6.19-21)
• The Loyalty test. (Matthew 6.24)

CONCLUSION
Discipleship is learning from Jesus and apply-
ing what is learned in the different aspects
of life.

VCS 2019 Teachers’ Training 25

The call to discipleship confronts one into
making a decision: to follow Jesus or not.

One grows as a disciple of Jesus in stages, not

as a result of a big, one-time event.

Times of testing and trials shape and spur

growth as a disciple of Jesus.

Are sisters and brothers in the family of God.

We have our families and friends we can play with;
There are so many good things we can do.

So many children, all of them different.

God gave each person his own thing to do.
All of God’s children are sisters and brothers.
I know God loves me and God loves you too.

God has a family with many people,

Grown-ups and children who love God today.
We get together to care for each other.
To worship and learn how to follow God’s way.
