Gallery Walk

When students are using gallery walk, they are able to explore many different images, ideas,
texts, or other information that are displayed around the room. The students would have the task
to respond to the questions, ideas, or prompts around the room and record their thoughts or
feelings about each one. This gives the students an opportunity to get up and moving which
shows much more engagement from the students.

How to use
1. Preparation

Teacher will come up with prompts or questions to be hung around the room. The teacher can
write these questions/prompts on giant post-it note paper, white boards, chart paper, etc. Teacher
will place these in separate areas of the room with a fair amount of space between them (these
will be known as stations).

2. Group Students

Students will need to be placed in groups of about three to five students each and one student
assigned to be the starting recorder. The groups will be given a designated starting station where
they will begin the gallery walk.

3. Student Exploration

The students will start at their designated spot and record their information about their
question/prompt. The student responses should be made on the giant post-it, white board, or
chart paper as well as on their own recording sheet. The students will initial beside their
responses so that the teacher and other students will be able to know who the response came
from. After around 3 to 5 minutes, the groups will rotate to a different station where the recorder
to will switch to a different student within the group. The teacher will monitor the stations as the
students work to ensure that all students are contributing.

3. Reflection

Groups will return to their starting stations to view what the other groups have added to their
response. The whole class will participate in a discussion about what was learned and what
conclusions could be drawn.

When to use
● To solve math problems
● After reading text in order to analyze characters, ideas, or themes
● To explore images or text
● To promote class discussion on a topic
● After students complete a project to gain feedback from peers

Variations
I like, I Wonder, Next Steps

Very similar to gallery walk except instead of students responding to questions/prompts from the
teacher, they are giving feedback to their peer’s work. Students will record one think that they
like about their peer’s work, one thing that they wonder about it, and one thing their peer could
do next in order to improve their work.

Graffiti

Concepts or ideas are placed around the room, and students use different colored utensils to draw
pictures and record their thoughts on each concept/idea. The different colors are used to
determine which responses belong to which students.

Gallery Run

This is the same concept as gallery walk, except it is a much faster pace. This is a faster pace
because the questions at each station are at a much lower level so that students can gain more
practice from being able to answer many more questions.
