1. Assists the patient to a sitting or high Fowler’s position. 2. Places disposable plastic bag on the bed or within reach. 3. Drapes a linen-saver pad across the patient’s chest. 4. Dons procedure gloves. 5. Attaches the a 60 mL syringe to the proximal end of the tube and flushes with 10 mL of air. 6. Unpins the tube from the patient’s gown and then untapes the tube from the patient’s nose. 7. Pinches the proximal end of the tube. 8. Asks patient to hold his breath. 9. Quickly and gently withdraws the tube and places it in the plastic bag. 10. Hands the patient a tissue. 11. Provides mouth care. 12. Removes gloves and disposes of gloves and tube in the nearest receptacle, according to facility policy.
