TUBESHOR 1060
TUBULAR SHORING SYSTEM

Introduction
Comprising only four versatile lengths of leg extension and a cone reducer which bolt simply together at the joints,
Tubeshor 1060 is used with the Tubeshor 610 hybrid hydraulic tubular shoring system accessories to achieve greater
spans/loads when propping waling beams or capping beams of large excavations and greater un-braced heights/loads
for vertical applications such as bridge bearing replacement. The Tubeshor 610 hydraulic ram unit is rated for an AWL
of 2500kN rising to 4500kN once the unique mechanical lock off collar is engaged. High rotation Swivel Units have an
AWL of up to 4750kN and innovative Spherical Bearers 5000kN. If hydraulic adjustment/preloading are not required, a
comprehensive range of accessories is available to facilitate reduced cost options for versatile and economical longer
term propping solutions.

Design to EN Standards
The RMD Kwikform Tubeshor 1060 System has been designed in accordance with EN14653, manufactured in
accordance with EN1090 and all components carry CE marking.
To facilitate a simplified scheme design using established permissible load methods, load performance data in this
document is displayed as an ‘Allowable Working Load’. Should Limit State Design be required, the Design Resistance
may be obtained by multiplying the Allowable Working Load values by 1.5.

Performance when used with Tubeshor 610 Stub End 410mm (Blue)
When fitted at the ends of horizontal Tubeshor 1060 props with any degree of rotational end restraint, the overall strut
performance is determined by use of the lower value taken from the graph below and graphs 1060/H4-1060/H6.
Weldable stubs can be site welded to the Customer’s or RMDK embedded steel plates. For details of RMDK
embedded plates refer to Tubeshor 610 Data.
It is not likely that that site trimming of the stub will be accurate enough to enable the loads to be transferred directly
between the stub and the supported steel and so all loads are carried by the site welding. When the stub is fully loaded
as determined by the graph below, the weld leg length should equal 20mm. When the prop is loaded below the
maximum the weld size may be proportionally reduced.

Diesel Power Pack HP 500/120bar (orange) (TGX01000) weight 301kg

A grade 46 mineral oil only, diesel powered, twin gear hydraulic pump used with
Tubeshor 610 Ram Units to adjust length, apply preload, raise or lower load and
enable release of any locking collar.
Robust steel cage enclosure includes fork lift access below, welded lifting points,
access openings and a hinged access door with a key operated latch.
Having choke/throttle and key operated electric start, the high volume, mid-
pressure pump provides 10 litres per minute flow rate at a maximum pressure of
120bar for easy pre-load and maximum retraction load of up to 75 tonnes.
An integral hydraulic booster enables smooth onward transition to a highly
controllable reduced flow rate of 1.3 litres per minute at a maximum pressure of
500bar for extension loads in the Ram Unit of up to 250 tonnes.
For full instructions on use and maintenance, refer to Installation Guide UIX 30870
- Diesel Hydraulic Pump and attendant Handling, Inspection and Maintenance
(HIM) sheets.

1/4” & 1/2” Hose Pair 6.0m - 700/400bar (VAU10046) weight 5.8kg
A pair of joined hoses used to connect the Two Speed Diesel Power Packs
with Tubeshor 610 Ram Units.
The high pressure feed hose is rated for a maximum pressure of 700bar and has 1/4” HP flat
face, lockable quick release couplings and yellow identifier cuffs.
The medium pressure return hose is rated for a maximum pressure of 400bar and has 3/8” ISO
A quick release fittings. Use of different couplings ensures correct connection of the power
pack and couplings differ from hoses used with hand pumps thus avoiding contamination of
hydraulic oil based hoses and power packs with shoring fluid and vice versa.

Lifting Accessories
Used to handle individual components during assembly and to lift assembled props into the
excavation. The Alloy Bow Shackle attaches to the 12t SWL welded lifting lugs on the
components and the 2 Leg Chains are used to connect to the lifting equipment.
Calculate the load in inclined legs to ensure that individual chain legs are not overloaded.
Tubeshor props 50m long weigh up to 24tonnes; either lift the prop into the excavation in
sections or, if lifting in wholesale, use two layers of appropriately rated slings to enable the prop
assembly to be lifted equally at four welded lifting points, two at each end of the prop.

Structural Parameters
To facilitate a simple scheme design using established permissible load methods, performance data is displayed as an
Allowable Working Load. Should limit state design be required, minimum Design Resistances may be obtained by
multiplying Allowable Working Loads by 1.5.
Graph values have been obtained using non-linear second order analysis including all relevant load actions,
geometric imperfections and bolted joint limitations. Limit State is reached at the onset of first elastic yield.

Ground Shoring Applications

Horizontal or inclined props are arranged such that they restrain one or both sides of an excavation. In this mode
Tubeshor props are designed to comply with EN14653: Manually Operated Hydraulic Shoring Systems for Groundwork
Support, EC3: Design of Steel Structures and CIRIA C760: Guidance on Embedded Retaining Wall Designs.

Boundary Conditions
Props are modelled as simply supported having pinned ends with end axial loads applied with an eccentricity of either
50mm (10% of the end fitting size in accordance with CIRIA C760) or 0mm depending on end fittings and orientation.

Geometrical Imperfections
An initial out of straightness of the overall prop of L/350, acting either up or down has been used. This value was
obtained from the raw material out of straightness of L/500 plus an allowance for additive tolerance during
manufacture; assembled props have been found to be straighter than this.
A reduced strength for the bolted joints in the three permitted configurations has been taken into account. Correct
modelling of the bolted joints between components is pivotal in determining the correct strut curves.
The option to add one or two pre-camber shims of fixed 1.0° angle bolted between ring flanges near mid span has
been included which reduces self weight deflection and second order effects.

Load Actions and Partial Factors

A material factor of 1.1 has been used on resistance properties (moment and axial).
Self-Weight (Gk) is represented by a uniformly distributed load of 4.57kN/m with a partial load factor 1.35
Geotechnical Loading (Gk,GEO) is applied with a partial load factor of 1.5
Accidental Loading (Qk,accidental) of either 0kN, 10kN or 20kN acts as a central point load with a partial load factor of 1.0

TUBULAR SHORING SYSTEM

Thermal Loading
Where appropriate thermal loading (Qk,temp) is considered separately and covers cases where the screw collar on the
Tubeshor 610 Ram Lock Unit is locked down or raised.
Thermal load graphs include options for the stiffness factor for the supported wall - bof 0.3 appropriate for use with
sheet piled excavations or bof 0.5 appropriate for use with stiffer diaphragm or secant piled walls (in accordance with
CIRIA 760 - Guidance on Embedded Retaining Wall Design, paragraph 8.1.7).

Thermal Loading with the Screw Collar Locked

The load path is through the steel components of the prop. The Ram Lock Unit is similar in stiffness to the Tubeshor
1060 extensions and this is evident by the relatively constant thermal effect for all lengths of prop in charts T1 and T2.

Thermal Loading with the Screw Collar Raised

The axial load bypasses the casing of the Ram Lock Unit and passes instead through the hydraulic cylinder including
the column of hydraulic oil which has a bulk modulus (volumetric stiffness) 130 times lower than the elastic modulus of
steel. As a result props with raised screw collars have significantly less axial stiffness than those with the collar locked.
Thermal Loading can be as a result of direct solar gain, daily temperature range, seasonal temperature variations or
more commonly a combination of all three. The thermal expansion coefficient of hydraulic oil is 58 times higher than for
steel, making temperature range for the oil also significant. The oil is buried within the confines of a hydraulic cylinder
having 25mm thick steel walls, itself encased in still air within a steel casing having 25/40mm thick walls. As a result
the change in temperature in the oil will lag behind that of the Tubeshor prop body.
In the absence of measured data, it is for the designer to decide any appropriate difference in thermal range between
the hydraulic oil and steel prop exterior. Graphs are provided for the following conditions and RMDK’s interpretation as
to appropriate usage is shown in italic text. Some proprietary equipment suppliers use δT Hydraulic Oil = 0 for all
design durations.

1. δT Hydraulic Oil = 0 Extreme short term loading - 1 day

2. δT Hydraulic Oil = 50% δT Prop Short term loading < 3 months (daily thermal range dominates)
3. δT Hydraulic Oil = δT Prop Long term loading > 3 months (seasonal and daily thermal ranges apply)

Loading Combinations
In many markets it is not usual to allow for thermal loading but where this is required the results from the axial load and
thermal load charts can be combined in the following load cases from which the lowest allowable working load will
govern. This is the approach used in CIRIA C760:Guidance on Embedded Retaining Wall Design.

LC1: 1.35Gk + 1.35Gk,GEO + 0.9Qk,temp

LC2: 1.25Gk + 1.25Gk,GEO + 1.5Qk,temp
LC3: 1.0Gk + 1.0Gk,GEO + 1.0Qk,accidental + 0.6Qk,temp

Example Calculations
Check the suitability of a 40m long, non pre-cambered Tubeshor 1060 prop with the screw collar raised and having
Swivel Units both ends with the pivot pins vertical. The prop is to be designed for an accidental load of 10kN and a
thermal range of 20°C in a sheet piled wall excavation. The excavation is to be open for 40 weeks.
Applied Load PSLS = 1500kN
As the excavation is to be open for 40 weeks, use the long term thermal load chart 1060/T5 - Qk,temp = 425kN
From CIRIA C760, Section 8.1.6
LC1: 1.35Gk* + 1.35Gk,GEO + 0.9Qk,temp
1.35 x 1500 + 0.9 x 425 = 2408kN
LC2: 1.25Gk* + 1.25Gk,GEO + 1.5Qk,temp
1.25 x 1500 + 1.5 x 425 = 2513kN
LC3: 1.0Gk* + 1.0Gk,GEO + 1.0Qk,accidental* + 0.6Qk,temp
1.0 x 1500 + 0.6 x 425 = 1755kN
* Contributions from prop self weight and accidental load are already included in the load charts.
Using 24 no. external and 12 no. alternate internal bolts
For LC1 and LC2, using graph 1060/H7 AWL = 1750kN
(To obtain design resistance, multiply by partial factor of 1.5) = 2625kN > 2513kN OK
For LC3, using graph 1060/H8 AWL = 1650kN
(To obtain design resistance, multiply by partial factor of 1.5) = 2475kN > 1755kN OK

Vertical Shoring Applications

Use of the Tubeshor 610 Spherical Bearer at the end of the prop ensures concentric loading. Where the Tubeshor 610 Swivel Unit
is used, a load eccentricity of zero has been used in one axis and 50mm in the other. We recommend that for loads in excess of
50% of the allowable prop working load, grouting should be used between the Swivel Unit end plate and a concrete foundation.
Vertical load charts include data for dynamic wind pressure q ranging from 0-3kN/m2
