Ruach Elohim ACRYLIC ON HAN DMADE WATE RCOLOR PAPE R , 2018 ALL ARTWORK © DURGA YAEL BERNHARD
In the beginning, before even light and dark are created, Ruach Elohim, the spirit of the Eternal, moves across the formless depth of existence. Impossible to def ine, this inef fable wind, as the word
means in Hebrew, is thought to be the breath of life that animates ever y living creature. In this painting, it is imagined as a force that uncoils from itself, gathering light in the form of colors. At the
same time, this mysterious ruach is a rippling current that infuses the world with t’shuvah, the power of redemption that is thought to precede Creation.

The Birth of Seth ACRYLIC ON HAN DMADE WATE RCOLOR PAPE R , 2018
Af ter the death of Abel and the banishment of Cain, the f irst Torah por tion, B’reishit, tells of the bir th of Seth. As in many ancient stories, the third child is a child of consolation, who sets right the
wrongs that have preceded him. Pronounced “ Shet” in Hebrew, the word means “placed”, for Seth replaces the two sons that have been tragically lost to the unsolvable conf lict between farmer and shep-
herd, between town dweller and wilderness wanderer. This third child transcends the dualism that brings about destruction. Like a gif t from God, only a new bir th can heal the bereaved parents, Adam and
Eve – and renew their hope for future generations. Many Biblical scholars believe it is Seth who becomes the progenitor of the line that
leads to Jacob and the twelve tribes of Israel. ‫חשון תשעייט‬-‫תשרי‬

The Jewish Eye ACRYLIC ON C ANVA S , 2018
This “painted mosaic” of colored rectangles explores the relationship of three basic shapes. The six-pointed star is chosen to represent Jewish religion; the hamsa – an open hand with an eye in the palm –
represents Jewish culture; and the silhouette of a human head and shoulders represents Jewish law. Beginning with a question, I strove to bring these three major branches of Jewish tradition into symbolic
accord, while also keeping them separate. With building blocks of color like stones in a wall – f irst opposing color to set the shapes apar t , then similar color to weave them together – the three distinct
shapes were gradually brought into harmony. At the center, they share a common eye – the essential belief in one God that is at the center of Judaism.

Joseph & His Brothers ACRYLIC ON HAN DMADE WATE RCOLOR PAPE R , 2018
This month’s Torah por tion Vayigash begins with Judah stepping for ward to plead with Joseph to let their lit tle brother Benjamin go free. Thrown into a pit and sold into slaver y by his brothers years ago, Joseph, by a
series of nearly miraculous t wists of fate, now stands in a position of great power over them. Second in command only to Pharaoh, Joseph rules over Eg ypt , and is unrecognized by his eleven brothers who have come
to plead for food, and now justice. When Joseph hears of the harm that his detainment of Benjamin will surely bring upon his father Jacob, who still grieves for Joseph in their famine -stricken homeland, the young
ruler f irst turns away to hide his emotions, and then crumbles, f inally revealing himself to his astonished brothers. Joseph forgives them and saves his family, welcoming them to Eg ypt . The profound misfor tune of his
youth has transformed into a saving grace that will sustain the line of Jacob for generations to come.

Etz Chaim ACRYLIC ON HAN DMADE WATE RCOLOR PAPE R , 2018
This painting combines three ideas into one image: the Torah as Et z Chaim, a tree of life with massive trunks that grow from the center of the scrolls; a tree of life that manifests as a family tree; and a tree of life in
the form of an ancient , gnarled olive tree – one of the seven species that is honored in this month’s holiday Tu B’Shevat , the “New Year for the Trees.” The family tree is f ictitious, but inspired by recent DNA tests
that have revealed hidden ancestors in the Diaspora. I can only imagine the many unknown people who are par t of my family tree: farmers and scribes, musicians and scholars, rabbis and tailors, businessmen and
ar tists. Like a bark-skinned animal, only the ancient olive tree has old enough roots to bear so much living histor y, and branches that t wist and grow in so many directions.

Dead Sea Wadi OI L ON C ANVA S , 2018
This wadi in Ein Gedi is one of my favorite places in Israel. Climbing up from the widening f lats along the Dead Sea , the trail cuts in and out of shaded clef ts as it makes its way up the ravine. Rough
boulders along the way bake in the sun – ancient witnesses to over four thousand years of human footsteps, dating back to before the time of King David, all the way to Abraham. Walking in this timeless
place that has changed so little over the millennia , one paradoxically discovers new views of the sea ever y few feet , framed by the endlessly-varied rocks of this unforgettable Judean Deser t landscape.

Arrow Slit, Old City Wall
OI L ON C ANVA S , 2018
The Old City of Jerusalem is surrounded by a massive stone wall that was built in the 16th centur y by the Ottoman ruler Suleiman the Magnif icent . Along the top of the wall, a for tif ied rampar t runs from
Jaf fa Gate, around to the south and east toward the Mount of Olives. There my daughter and her friend ran gleefully ahead as my illustrator friend and I took photos and did quick sketches of views along
the way. This arrow slit caught my eye with its eroded chiseled planes, narrow opening, and sunlit view of the clay-roofed neighborhood below – like an aper ture into another centur y.

Shirat Hayam (Song of the Sea) ACRYLIC ON PAPE R , 2018
The stor y of E xodus is perhaps the greatest tale of liberation of all time. This month during the Passover seder, we remember Miriam and the many courageous women who helped the Israelites escape
their oppressors and break free from Eg ypt . Af ter crossing the Red Sea , they stand on the far shore looking into their future, a rising sun in the East . In a moment of unsurpassed triumph and exaltation,
the long-enslaved people rejoice in their freedom for the f irst time – a freedom that will bring many challenges. As the Israelites learn to forge a new life of social order and justice, Miriam’s presence
brings more blessings, marking the comings and goings of water, and adding a feminine element that will be so crucial to Jewish tradition in times to come.

Yom Hashoah ACRYLIC ON C ANVA S , 2012
This sober image of Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorates my maternal grandmother’s family, Hungarian Jews who perished in the Shoah, as well as the countless millions of Jews and many others who have
suf fered and died in massacres and pogroms throughout the ages. The Star of David that I casually wore around my neck as a child becomes the yellow patch that meant death in my grandmother’s youth. Also
commemorated on this month’s holiday are the many brave and righteous individuals who acted heroically to save innocent lives.

Shavuot OI L ON C ANVA S , 2014
This painting began with the desire to create a “visual Torah” in honor of Shavuot , this month’s holiday that celebrates the giving of the Torah. The scrolls become trees ripe with pomegranates, unfold-
ing from the landscapes of Israel: the crag g y mountains of the Sinai deser t; the rolling pastures of the Galilee; the buildings and streets of Jerusalem; and the fer tile valleys where almond trees blossom
each spring, bringing the promise of new life. Receiving it all is a common person who embraces the Torah, needing no priest or go-between to access its spiritual riches.

The Red Heifer OI L ON C ANVA S , 2018
This month’s Torah por tion Chukat describes rites of the dead that involve a red heifer: a female cow both primal and innocent , unspoiled by labor, fer tile with potential. Special ashes are prepared and dissolved in
“living water,” then ritually sprinkled on anyone who comes in contact with a dead body. These rules, or chukim, are considered among the most mysterious in the Torah, par tly for the contradiction they present: for
the ashes that are used to purif y also render the user impure. Whatever its meaning, we learn from the red heifer ritual the impor tance of separating death from life. As ash dissolves in “living water,” or life force –
so too, does death dissolve in the stream of life – af f irming the Jewish imperative to choose, and honor, life for the sake of life.

This shapely pomegranate from the Machane Yehudah market in Jerusalem beg ged to be painted, as did the bot tle of olive oil and the scar f from Zion Square. What bet ter set ting than a balcony in the lovely
neighborhood of Rechavia? Stepping outside, one entered at third f loor level a cour t yard where laundr y hung to dr y, and the clinking of dishes could be heard from neighboring apar tments – and once in a while, the
notes of a piano like water trickling over pebbles, mingling with the sound of a bird in the eucalyptus tree – and beyond that , the sounds of cit y life in the streets of Jerusalem.

Forest Shofar ACRYLIC ON B IRC H BARK , 2018
To live in the Diaspora as a rural Jew is to weave nature with community. Ever seeking the threads that bring warp and wef t together, I dreamed I was walking in a Nor th American forest during the
Yamim Nora’im – the Days of Awe, from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur – when the gates of heaven are thought to stay open for ten days. In the dream, I walked away from my synagogue’s High Holy Day
tent and entered the dark woods. All the animals of the forest came to the sound of my shofar, gathering around me, af f irming the connection between Jewish tradition and the natural world. In the naive
style of Nor th American folk ar t , I painted my dream on birch bark as a symbol of this vital fusion.
