CASE 1
QUESTION:
Mary discovers that her plant (factory) is discharging a substance into the river
that is not regulated by the government. ……... Then all the other plants will have
to spend money too, and we will not be at a competitive disadvantage.” What
should Mary do?
ANSWER:
Being an engineer, Mary has to set code of ethics at priority while making every
decision. Concerning public safety, IEEE code of ethics states:

1. to hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public, to strive to comply with ethical
design and sustainable development practices, and to disclose promptly factors that might endanger
the public or the environment;

Meanwhile, Mary faces opposition against public safety from her employer. So this
leaves us with the Individual vs Community paradigm which could be sorted out
through Line Drawing Method, as follow:

FACTORS Paradigm( Do Test Case Paradigm(Action

Nothing) to stop discharge)
Estimated Harm High ------------x-- Low
Expense Nothing ---x----------- Huge
Threat to Job None x-------------- High
Public Safety Reduced ------------x-- Better
Overall Pollution None ----------x---- Little
reduction

According to Line diagram; two crosses are left aligned while two are right, thus
resulting cross being at right concludes that Mary should not compromise on public
safety and must fight through her case, maybe she could take her case to her
employer’s employer and solution could be work out. While costs could too be reduced
by improvising solutions.
CASE 2
QUESTION:

Tom is designing a new chemical plant…….to a golf game at the local country club.
Should Tom accept the offer?

ANSWER:

In this case, Tom is faced with critical scenario, which could result in him accepting
bribery. IEEE states about bribery:

to reject bribery in all its forms;

Thus we had to analyze preciseness of situation to conclude this form of bribery. Again
Line drawing method is used:

FACTORS Paradigm( Accepts Test Case Paradigm(Rejects

Offer) Offer)
Valve Quality High --------------- Low
Cost Low --------------- High
Responsibility All -------------x- Sole
Time of offer After ------------x-- Before
Offer Size Less Costly ----------x---- Expensive

According to table, two decisive information are missing from the scenario while
resulting factors are rightly aligned so, Tom must reject this offer as it would affect his
decision and could compromise on quality of product. It is a form of bribery.
