xSNMP Suite Overview
The xSNMP Management Pack Suite implements a broad spectrum of SNMP-based monitoring in
Operations Manager 2007 R2 environments. The management packs have been designed to be flexible,
modular and extensible, with additional management packs to extend functionality currently planned.
The core of the management pack suite is the xSNMP Management Pack, which implements a set of
base classes, reusable data sources, and universal SNMP device and interface monitoring (RFC-
1213/SNMPv2 MIB, IF-MIB, EtherLike-MIB) for any SNMP device known to Operations Manager. The
remaining management packs extend the functionality of the xSNMP Management Pack by adding
vendor or device-specific SNMP monitoring. An unsealed overrides management pack (xSNMP
Overrides MP) implements a set of pre-configured groups and overrides to control the monitoring of
network interfaces.

Deployment
The xSNMP Management Pack is referenced by all of the other management packs and must be
imported before or with any of the other xSNMP Management Packs.
PowerShell is required on any Gateway or Agent Proxy that will discover or monitor SNMP
Network Devices monitored by the xSNMP Management Packs. If PowerShell is not installed,
Operations Manager will alert on this condition and object discoveries and monitoring will not
be successful.
If a large number of SNMP devices are to be monitored, a phased deployment is recommended
in order to limit initial discovery activity and assess performance impact to management servers
and/or agent proxy systems. The deployment can be phased by importing only the xSNMP and
xSNMP Overrides Management Packs first, as well as by overriding the Discover xSNMP Device
rule to set a filter to target devices with specific enterprise numbers, or even disabling discovery
completely and enabling for specific devices with overrides.

Upgrading
Upgrading from version 1.1.0 to version 1.1.1 is fully supported and requires only importing the version
1.1.1 xSNMP Management Pack as well as any additional required dependent management packs.
Upgrading from version 1.0.8 is not supported. To upgrade from version 1.0.8, download the version
1.1.0 zip archive and follow the documented upgrade instructions in that version.
If upgrading, do not import the provided xSNMP Overrides Management Pack. This is an unsealed
management pack, and importing a new version would overwrite any customizations stored in the
current xSNMP Overrides Management Pack.
Much attention has been paid to the scalability and performance of the monitoring and discovery
implementation of the xSNMP Management Packs, but some general guidelines should be considered:
If possible, SNMP Network Devices to be monitored with the xSNMP Management Packs should
be watched by management servers or agent proxies other than the RMS, particularly if a high
number of devices and objects (such as interfaces) are to be monitored. Agent proxy systems
are a good way to distribute the resource utilization involved in monitoring a high number of
SNMP objects (be sure PowerShell is installed on the agent proxy systems).
A dedicated agent proxy should be able to effectively monitor between 1500-3000 monitored
objects (devices, interfaces, chassis objects, volumes, etc).
Only objects required to be monitored should be discovered and monitored. This particularly
applies to Network Interface objects, which can be numerous when monitoring switches. The
discovery of network interface objects can be filtered by the interface index value to discover
only specified interfaces. Additionally, preconfigured groups and overrides are included in the
xSNMP Overrides MP to control monitoring for interfaces.
7|Page
If a large number of objects are monitored by an agent proxy system, the maximum size of the
Health Store Version Store may need to be increased (as evidenced by Event ID 623 events in
the Operations Manager Event logs). The size can be increased by setting the registry value:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\HealthService\ParametersPersistence Version Store
Maximum registry value and restarting the System Center Management Service.
Discover SNMP Network Devices as normal with the Discovery Wizard.
In the Operations Console Administration pane, locate the system(s) to be used as an agent
proxy under the Device Management\ Agent Managed listing. Right click the agent system and
choose "Properties." Check the box to "Allow this agent to act as a proxy..." under the Security
tab and click OK.
For each SNMP Network Device to be assigned to the agent proxy system, locate the device in
the Device Management\Network Devices section of the Operations Console Administration
pane. Right click on the device, select Change Proxy Agent, and assign the device to the desired
agent.

xSNMP Management Pack
Overview
The xSNMP Management Pack is the base management pack of the xSNMP suite and is referenced by
each of the other management packs. The xSNMP Management Pack discovers SNMP Network Devices
known to the Operations Manager management group and implements monitoring of the device and
network interface objects.
Prior to discovery as xSNMP monitored objects, SNMP devices must be discovered in the Operations
Manager Management Group as SNMP Network Devices.
By default, monitoring and performance data collection is disabled for all network interface objects. The
xSNMP Overrides Management Pack contains a set of groups and overrides to easily control the
monitoring for network interfaces. To enable monitoring and data collection for other network
interfaces, the interfaces should be added to one of the groups created by this management pack.
9|Page
Group members can be added explicitly, or defined with dynamic membership rules. For more
information, reference the documentation section for the xSNMP Overrides Management Pack.
The speed of a network interface is used in the calculation of utilization values for both data collection
and alerting. Three speed properties are defined for xSNMP Network Interface objects: Speed,
SpeedMb, and Speed Override. The Speed property is in bits per second and is discovered from the
ifTable of the RFC-1213 MIB. The SpeedMb property is in Mbits per second and is discovered from the
ifHighSpeed property in the ifXTable of the IF-MIB. If an interface speed is greater than 1Gb/s, only the
SpeedMb property will be used in the calculation of interface utilization due to limitations in the 32bit
integer size of the ifTable ifSpeed property.
In some cases, the actual speed of an interface is not a good representation of the true bandwidth of the
interface. For example, if a gigabit switch port is connected to an ISP-provided T1 uplink, the actual
interface speed is 1Gb/s, but for monitoring purposes, utilization may need to be calculated for the
interface using the 1.54 Mb/s T1 speed. For these cases, a separate discovery named: " Discover
xSNMP Network Interface Speed Override Property" is provided to manually set the Speed Override
property value. To use this override, it must be enabled for an interface (or group of interfaces) with
the InterfaceSpeedInBits override property set to the desired speed value for the interface. Once the
discovery has populated with the interface's Speed Override property with the manually-set value, it will
be automatically used in interface utilization calculations.

Monitors
10 | P a g e
xSNMP Network Interface Status (Aggregate)
Aggregate monitor for operational status of a Network Interface object. Generates an alert if
the interface status is down as determined by an SNMP poll or SNMP trap.
xSNMP Network Interface Status (SNMP Poll)
Monitors the operational status of a network interface with an SNMP poll. This monitor will
detect interfaces as down only if the operational status is down, the administrative status is up,
and the interface last change time (sysUpTime at the time of last change) is greater than 0. The
interface last change time will be 0 if the interface has not changed state since the last device
reboot, so interfaces that have been operationally down since the last device reboot will not
generate alerts. This monitor is disabled by default. Groups in the xSNMP Overrides MP can be
used to enable it for specific interfaces.
xSNMP Network Interface Status (SNMP Trap)
Listens for LinkUp and LinkDown SNMP traps and adjusts interface health accordingly. This
monitor is disabled by default. Groups in the xSNMP Overrides MP can be used to enable it for
specific interfaces.
xSNMP Network Interface Percent Utilization
Monitors the percent utilization (maximum of inbound and outbound) and alerts if the
utilization surpasses the defined threshold. Utilization is calculated from the interface in and
out octet values and interface speed. If the interface is discovered to support 64Bit counters,
64Bit IF octet counters will be enabled automatically through overrides. For interfaces with a
speed of 1Gb or higher, the ifHighSpeed (as opposed to ifSpeed) value will be used for this
calculation. This monitor is disabled by default. Groups in the xSNMP Overrides MP can be used
to enable it for specific interfaces.
xSNMP Network Interface FCS Errors
Monitors the increase in Network Interface FCS errors over two polling cycles (NumSamples
parameter) and alerts if the threshold is surpassed. FCS errors may indicate an auto-
negotiation speed/duplex mismatch. This monitor is disabled by default. Groups in the xSNMP
Overrides MP can be used to enable it for specific interfaces.
xSNMP Network Interface In Errors
Monitors the increase in Network Interface In errors over two polling cycles (NumSamples
parameter) and alerts if the threshold is surpassed. This monitor is disabled by default. Groups
in the xSNMP Overrides MP can be used to enable it for specific interfaces.
xSNMP Network Interface Late Collision Errors
Monitors the increase in Network Interface Late Collision errors over two polling cycles
(NumSamples parameter) and alerts if the threshold is surpassed. Late Collision errors may
indicate an auto-negotiation speed/duplex mismatch. This monitor is disabled by default.
Groups in the xSNMP Overrides MP can be used to enable it for specific interfaces.
xSNMP Network Interface Out Errors
Monitors the increase in Network Interface Out errors over two polling cycles (NumSamples
parameter) and alerts if the threshold is surpassed. This monitor is disabled by default. Groups
in the xSNMP Overrides MP can be used to enable it for specific interfaces.

Collect xSNMP Network Interface In Throughput (Mb)
Performance collection rule for the current inbound throughput of a network interface, in Mbit.
If the interface is discovered to support 64Bit counters, 64Bit IF octet counters will be enabled
automatically through overrides. This rule is disabled by default. Groups in the xSNMP Overrides
MP can be used to enable it for specific interfaces.
Collect xSNMP Interface Inbound Errors
Performance collection rule for the count of inbound errors on network interfaces. This rule is
disabled by default. Groups in the xSNMP Overrides MP can be used to enable it for specific
interfaces.
Collect xSNMP Ethernet Interface Late Collisions

Known Issues
GUI Properties for the "xSNMP Network Interface Status (SNMP Poll)" Monitor
The System Center Operations Manager 2007 Operations Console GUI will throw an error when
viewing the monitor properties of the monitor named: xSNMP Network Interface Status (SNMP
Poll). The Operations Console GUI cannot properly handle SNMP trap monitors that are
targeted to classes that are not derived from the Microsoft.SystemCenter.NetworkDevice base
class. This particular monitor is targeted to xSNMP Network Interface objects, which have a
nested hosting relationship to the Network Device object (xSNMP Device). This monitor must
be targeted to the interface object in order to accurately maintain health state for the interface,
and it's properties can be viewed in the Authoring Console, but not the Operations Console.

xSNMP Overrides Management Pack
Overview
The xSNMP Overrides Management Pack is an unsealed management pack to be used for storage of
overrides for xSNMP objects as well as to provide a set of groups to control network interface
monitoring.
Pre-defined Groups
Because the xSNMP Overrides group has to be unsealed to allow modification of the groups and
overrides, care should be taken when upgrading to any future releases of the xSNMP Management Pack
suite. Importing an unsealed management pack will overwrite any currently installed management
pack with the same id. The xSNMP Overrides MP should be routinely exported and backed up on an
automated basis in order to preserve customizations.
The four pre-defined groups in the xSNMP Overrides Management Pack can be populated with explicitly
added objects, or dynamic rules can be created to populate the groups with objects. To edit the groups,
access the Groups tab in the Authoring pane of the System Center Operations Console. For each of the
group, members should be of the xSNMP Network Interface class. The xSNMP Network Interfaces –
Fully Monitored: Alerting and Performance Data is preconfigured with the xSNMP Serial Interfaces group
added as an explicit member, to enable monitoring of discovered serial interfaces by default.
For example, to add all Ethernet interfaces with an administrative status of up, and a physical
connection present to one of the groups, a dynamic inclusion rule can be created like:
15 | P a g e
The xSNMP Network Interfaces – Fully Monitored: Alerting and Performance group is preconfigured
with a rule to include serial interfaces (determined from the interface type property). The first rule
(Type = 0) is a place holder for customized configuration.
16 | P a g e
A few notes on the use of dynamic inclusion rules to populate these groups:
With the use of “OR” groups, multiple rules can be configured for groups
Properties such as Interface Description, Interface Alias, and Type are good targets for rules to
identify interfaces for monitoring.
As an alternative to or in combination with “OR” groups, RegEx match filters can be used to
create rules that accept multiple values. For example, entering: .*(Ethernet|Serial|Port-
Channel).* as a RegEx match filter on the Interface description would match any interface with
the strings: Ethernet, Serial, or Port-Channel in the description property. Note: RegEx matches
are case-sensitive.
Subgroups can be explicitly added to these interface override groups, so groups can be created
with different rules, and added to one of the pre-configured groups as a sub-group.

xSNMP for Dell PowerEdge Management Pack
Overview
The xSNMP for Dell PowerEdge MP extends SNMP monitoring to Dell PowerEdge devices. Monitored
devices can be monitored through the Dell OpenManage services extension to an SNMP agent running
in the operating system, or through the DRAC out-of-band management interface.
Dell PowerEdge devices to be monitored with this management pack must be discovered as SNMP
Network Devices in Operations Manager and discovered as xSNMP Devices by the xSNMP Management
Pack. If monitoring is desired through the DRAC management interface, the DRAC interface must be
discovered as an SNMP Network Device in Operations Manager.
Discovery of Dell PowerEdge Servers is filtered to SNMP devices with System OID values representing
Windows and UNIX /Linux agents (Net-SNMP - 8072, UCDavis – 2021). Additional enterprise ID’s can be
added by overriding the DeviceOIDFilter parameter of the Discover “xSNMP Dell PowerEdge Device”
object discovery. The default value is: (311|2021|8072|6876). To include additional enterprise
identifiers, add the values to the | (pipe) separated list.

xSNMP for Net-SNMP Management Pack
Overview
The xSNMP for Net-SNMP Management Pack extends SNMP monitoring to UNIX/Linux agents and Linux-
based distributions that utilize the Net-SNMP (or UCDavis) SNMP Agent.
Net-SNMP devices to be monitored with this management pack must be discovered as SNMP Network
Devices in Operations Manager and discovered as xSNMP Devices by the xSNMP Management Pack.
Monitored Processes, Extensible Objects, and Files are exposed through the Net-SNMP ‘proc,’ ‘exec,’
and ‘file’ directives in the agent’s snmpd.conf file. For more information on configuring these
components, reference the Net-SNMP documentation at: http://www.net-
snmp.org/docs/man/snmpd.conf.html.
To enable CPU and Memory threshold monitoring for processes, the processes must be discovered as
xSNMP Monitored Process objects (i.e. defined in the snmpd.conf with a proc directive) and the CPU
and/or Memory threshold defined. To define a memory or CPU threshold for a monitored process,
override the discovery named: “Discover xSNMP Net-SNMP Monitored Process” and set a value for the
parameters: CPUThreshold (% utilization) or MemoryThreshold (KB utilization). To disable CPU or
memory threshold monitoring for a process, return these values to the default of 0.
