1.0 INTRODUCTION
This report describes a fire performance evaluation conducted for Roof Care Co. LLC, in
accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 268, 2017 Edition, Standard Test
Method for Determining lgnitibility ofExterior Wall Assemblies Using a Radiant Heat Energy Source.
Testing was conducted at the Fire Technology Department of Southwest Research Institute (SwRI),
located in San Antonio, Texas.
This test method should be used to measure and describe the properties of materials, products,
or assemblies in response to heat and flame under controlled laboratory conditions and should not be
used to describe or appraise the fire hazard or fire risk of materials, products, or assemblies under actual
fire conditions. However, results of this test may be used as elements of a fire risk assessment which
takes into account all the factors that are pertinent to an assessment of the fire hazard of a particular end
use.
This report describes the testing of the assembly tested and the results obtained. The results
presented in this report apply specifically to the material tested, in the manner tested, and not to the
entire production of these or similar materials, nor to the performance when used in combination with
other materials.
2.0 SAMPLE DESCRIPTION
SwRI received two shipments of materials from Roof Care Co. LLC. Three metal wall frames
with noncombustible substrate were constructed by SwRI personnel for this project. The walls were
assembled in accordance with Roof Care Co. LLC installation instructions using the materials described
in Table 1, and the final assembly drawings from the instructions can be found in Appendix C.
On September 5-7, 2017, Mr. David Hintz, representing Underwriters Laboratories, was present
at SwRI to witness the construction of the wall assemblies. The panels were conditioned in accordance
with the standard and are described below in Table 2.
Table 1. Materials Received.
TEST SETUP
A calibration test was perfonned to establish the distance from the radiant panel to the
calibration panel in order to maintain an average heat flux of 12.5 kW/m2 ± 5% for a 20 min period, as
well as to verify that the average surface temperature of the radiant panel was 1600° F ± 50 °F. The
distance required to maintain the specified heat flux was measured to be 33 in. The heat flux was
obtained by averaging the four heat flux meters located at the comers of the central square foot of the
calibration panel. The heat flux at the center of the calibration panel shall not exceed 15 kW/m2 or be
less than 12.5 kW/m2 • During both the calibration and the test, a side-mounted reference heat flux meter
was located 4.0 in. from the vertical edge of the test specimen to the centerline of the gauge.
RESULTS
During the 20-min test period, none of the panel assemblies had sustained flaming for a period
greater than 5 s which meets the acceptance criteria stated in NFPA 268. Graphical data and visual
observations can be found in Appendix A. Photographic documentation is presented in Appendix B.

1.0 l1'TRODUCTI01'
The objective of this test program was to perfonn a fire perfonnance evaluation for Green
Products Imdustries WLL, located in Kingdom of Bahrain. The material was identified by the Client
as SWP. The material was tested in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
Standard 259, Standard Test Method for Potential Heat of Building Materials, 2013 Edition. Testing
was conducted on Janua1y 2 and 3, 2018, at Southwest Research Institute's (SwRI) Fire Technology
Department, located in San Antonio, Texas.
This test method is intended to measure and describe the properties of matetials, products, or
assemblies in response to heat and flame tmder controlled laborato1y conditions and should not be used
to describe or appraise the fire hazard or fire risk of materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire
conditions. However, results of this test may be used as elements of a fire risk assessment which takes
into account all of the factors which are pertinent to an assessment of the fire hazard of a particular end
use. The results apply specifically to the specimens tested, in the manner tested, and not to similar
materials, nor to the perfonnance when used in combination with other materials.
The gross and net calorific potential of materials are detennined as described in NFPA 259-13.
The apparatuses, specimen preparation, and test protocol are described in detail in this standard. There
are two test procedures used in this standard to detennine the potential heat of a material.
The first procedure is the oxygen bomb calorimeter test procedure. For this test, a specimen
weighing nominally 1.0 g ± 0.9 g is placed in a metal crucible, which is then placed in a stainless steel
bomb. If necessary, benzoic acid with a heat of combustion of 11,373 Btu/lb is used as a combustion
promoter. The sample is tested in general accordance with ASTM D5865-07a, Test Method for Gross
Calorific Value of Coal and Coke (The NFPA 259-13 references ASTM D3286, Standard Test Method
for Gross Calorific Value of Coal and Coke by the Isoperibol Bomb Calorimeter, but this standard was
withdrawn and replaced by ASTM D5865). This procedure yields a gross heat of combustion. Two
tests are conducted for repeatability. If the first two tests do not agree to within 10%, a third test is
pe1fonned.
The second test procedure, the electric muffle fomace test procedure, requires a test specimen
cut in the shape of a rectangular ptism measuring 13 x 19 x 64 mm 0,V x L x H) height to be placed on
the wire specimen holder, which is placed in the specimen container. The specimen container has a cap
on one end and a hole on the other end, which allows fresh air to circulate around the test sample to
promote complete combustion. The test sample is exposed to a temperature of 750 °C ± 10 °C for 2 hr
with a regulated airflow supplied at 47 cm3/s referenced to 20 °C and 101 kPa, i.e., standard temperature
If the mass of the residue remaining after the electric muffle furnace test procedme is not more
than 5% of the initial mass of the test specimen, then the gross heat of combustion measured in the
oxygen bomb calorimeter test procedure is considered to be the potential heat of the matedal tested.
If the mass of the residue is greater than 5% of the initial mass of the test specimen, then the
residue must be tested according to the oxygen bomb calorimeter test procedure. Two tests must be
perfonned, and if the results differ by more than 10%, a third test is perfonned. The potential heat of
the material is the difference between the gross heat of combustion measured in the first test procedure
and the gross heat of combustion of the residue (as defined inNFPA 259) from the second procedure.
Gross Heat of Combustion (Qgr) -The amount ofheat released by the complete combustion of
a unit ofmass ofthe material, coffected for the heats offonnation ofH2N03 and H2S04,
and for the heat ofcombustion ofthe firing wire and combustion promoter (if required).
The gross calorific potential has a different value when combustion occurs in a constant
pressure environment from that obtained in a constant volume environment. Tests are
performed in a constant volume.
Potential Heat (Qp) - The difference between the gJoss heat of combustion per unit mass of a
representative specimen of the material and the heat of combustion per unit mass of
any residue remaining after exposure of a representative specimen of the material to a
defined heat source, i.e., muffle furnace, using combustion calorimetric techniques.
SwRI personnel prepared specimens for bomb the calorimeter testing in accordance with
NFPA 259. Samples were prepared without a combustion promoter. For the electric muffle furnace
test procedure, specimens were cut to the appropriate dimensions (approximately 13 x 19 x 64 mm),
perNFPA 259.
Two oxygen bomb test nms were perfonned, and the average gross heat of combustion was
calculated. The percent difference was greater than 10%, so a third test was nm in accordance with the
standard. The material residues from the electric muffle fumace test mns were greater than 5%; thus, a
third residue test was nm in the bomb calorimeter. The potential heat of combustion was calculated
according to the following equation:
P=G-cR
given P is the potential heat of combustion, G is the gross heat of combustion, as calculated by bomb
testing of the raw material, c is the ratio of the weight of the residue to the weight of the initial sample
from the muffle fumace exposure, and R is the gross heat of combustion of the residue. We find the
potential heat of combustion of SWP to be3540 Btu/lb.

Green products industries have identified opportunity to develop high end thermal insulation and water proofing
solution for roof wall and basements in Bahrain and in the Middle East with backward integration of manufacturing
green polyurethane foam and environmental friendly water proofing system. In order to execute the project, GPI
Bahrain obtained permissions from ministry of commerce and environment to manufacture green products in Bahrain.
Our research focused on developing technologies that improve the energy efficiency and environmental compatibility
of residential and commercial buildings two decades ago in Middle East when we received first indication that WATER
AND ENERGY was going to be a critical issue to be addressed, if we want to save our next generation.
There were several alarming reports coming out from various organizations across the world, working in the same
fields and it inspired us to focus on this based on the experience we have in the waterproofing industry. We have made
considerable progress in our research and we feel that we are very close to concluding ONE STOP SHOP concept for
anyone who is constructing a new building or even retrofitting of an existing building.
Once we are up and running, we will initiate discussions for co-operation and assistance from oak ridge national
laboratory (ORNL) in US who owns a dedicated research facility for such developments and used some of their
experience in developing technologies with perfect cost:result ratio guaranteeing minimum 60% saving on air
conditioning energy cost both for existing and new buildings in GCC region.
We also feel that we need to make some investments in setting up a world class research facility in the state of
Bahrain with large scale climate simulator (LSCS) Rotabale Guarded Hot Box (RGHB), Roof Thermal Research
Apparatus (RTRA, and Envelope System Research Apparatus (ESRA) and work with known software such as WUFI
support such initiative in our facility.
Clearly our long term goal is to be the LEADERS in developing energy efficient BEP program/solution for the
construction industry which benefit our future generation and save millions of dollars which is being wasted in the
region.
Our Mission & Our Vision
1. Wall
RIM produced wall panels is a unique approach developed in USA and we manufacture under license from our partners
in Bahrain. Our initial approach was with EIFS (External Insulation Finishing System) but eventually after we decided to
do IIFS (Internal Insulation Finishing System).
• Long lasting
• Cost effective
• Fast application
Method of insulation and detailing etc. will be given special attention to ensure they do not cause any concern for the
longevity of the system.
Most of the technical presentation in the past was claiming 35-40% savings on air conditioning cost where as our actual
test house reports clearly indicate 56% savings if the roof and wall are insulated without thermal bridges etc. We do
have 1 year track record of such test available for any reference. Currently our research is focused on optimization of
the cost to make it as competitive as possible and increase the ROI (Return on Investment). We plan have 3 test houses
in Bahrain and we will have all records available for references to anyone who is interested, particularly all engineering
community in state of Bahrain and GCC states. We will also be using such practical test data to convince authorities to
support our initiatives for energy conservation which will benefit ministry of electricity immensely.
2. ROOF
30 years ago; we have brought SPF (Spray applied PU foam) from Baxenden chemicals in UK to address a key issue in
waterproofing of pre-cast slab roof in Bahrain. Ministry of housing in Bahrain have tried several types of roofing system
for their low-cost housing and majority of them have prematurely failed for several reasons. One of the main causes was
that they were not able to incorporate an efficient thermal insulation in to the roofing system and therefore after several
round of discussions we have won the contract for 250 houses to be done with our proposed system in 1985. We have
been tracking the system in detail and found they are performing much better than any other system and today ministry
do not approve anything other than such systems. During the last 30 years we have made several experiments with the
system and fine-tuned PU roof systems which is a perfect system for both waterproofing and thermal insulation
requirement of both flat and pitch roof. PU foam spray applied roof will meet any international standard in roofing
industry and to us it is the BEST system which will last the LIFE of the building. Our current efforts is to upgrade the
system further incorporating ILD technology (International Leak Detectors) so that monitoring of the system is made
easier and it can also help us to differentiate between us and our competitors.
3. WINDOW
We are still working on different technology to come up with 40-60% savings on windows. Triple glazing and argon gas
filling etc. are new technology to look at for such results. However, a coating type of product would be useful for existing
windows and achieve targeted savings.
