Table ___ presents some statements related to the adequacy of the Bachelor of Science in

Civil Engineering Program in terms of satisfaction of the Civil Engineering graduates with

their current job and in terms of satisfaction of the Employers with the performance of the

graduates. The overall mean rating as perceived by the graduates was 3.12, while the overall

mean rating as perceived by the employers was 3.04 which means most of the graduates and

employers agreed to the statements stated above.

Work Preparedness of the Civil Engineering Graduates
In Terms of the Skills and Abilities They Possess
as Perceived by The Graduates

Particulars WM VI
Overall theoretical foundation 2.52 Highly
Ability to make structural design 2.22 Fairly
Ability to prepare plans 2.51 Highly
Ability to make construction cost estimates 2.80 Highly
Mastery of using design software (e.g. AutoCAD, STAAD, 2.12 Fairly
ETABS, etc.
Knowledge of sequencing and scheduling of activities 2.54 Highly
Familiarity with construction terminology 2.63 Highly
Oral and written communication ability 2.78 Highly
Composite Mean 2.52 Highly

As shown in Table ___, the respondents in this study claimed that they highly possess the

skills particularly on preparing plans, making construction cost estimates, sequencing and

scheduling of activities, familiarity with construction terminology and oral and

communication ability from the school. Graduates learn little skill in making structural

designs and using design software as the results showed that these skills are just fairly

acquired. Results could be attributed to the fact that most of the respondents in this study

are civil engineering graduates who are not exposed to producing structural designs either

manually or by the use of design software.

Work Preparedness of the Civil Engineering Graduates
In Terms of the Skills and Abilities That the Graduate Exhibit
as Perceived by The Company/Employer

Particulars WM VI
Overall theoretical foundation 2.67 Highly
Ability to make structural design 2.06 Fairly
Ability to prepare plans 2.50 Highly
Ability to make construction cost estimates 2.56 Highly
Mastery of using design software (e.g. AutoCAD, STAAD, 2.33 Fairly
ETABS, etc.
Knowledge of sequencing and scheduling of activities 2.44 Fairly
Familiarity with construction terminology 2.83 Highly
Oral and written communication ability 3.00 Highly
Composite Mean 2.52 Highly

Table ___ presents the work preparedness of the Civil Engineering graduates in terms of the

skills and abilities that the graduate exhibit as perceived by the company/employer. The

employers revealed that the graduates are highly knowledgeable particularly on preparing

plans, making construction cost estimates, sequencing and scheduling of activities,

familiarity with construction terminology and oral and communication ability from the

school. However, employers exposed that the graduates under their supervision received

insufficient training on making structural designs and using design software.

Based from the results as perceived by the graduates and by the employers, there is a need

for the Civil Engineering Department to enhance the skills of the students on making

structural designs manually and by the use of design software as most of the employers

considered these to be the most required skills for the job. Educational institutions should

also focus and invest in training their students for them to be prepared for the war of skills

upon after graduation. (Bersin, 2012)

CONCLUSION

The researchers made their conclusions based on the analysis of the data gathered

from the findings generated by the responses of graduates and employers to the survey

questionnaires. The majority of the respondents were male, young, licensure examination

passer for civil engineer and ninety percent of them are currently employed in construction

industries locally and internationally handling professional, technical, supervisory or project

managerial positions wherein they find their first job in less than a year. Most of them are

working within two to five-year commitment with their current employer and earning Php

40,000 above per month. Through their experience and expertise as engineers in their

respective fields, their income will be considered as competitive salary for engineers.

On one hand, 80 percent of the employers are general contractors that prioritize

graduates with civil engineering license and those who possess the required skills for the job.

Most of the employers also revealed that the attitude and values of the graduates were

identified with very much contribution in meeting the demands of the present employment

of the graduates.

According to the results of the study, it can be concluded that there is no significant

difference between the perceptions of the immediate supervisors and the newly employed

BulSU civil engineers. Oral and communication skills are considered the foremost

competency by the civil engineering graduates acquired in college that found highly useful

to their job along with making construction cost estimates and familiarity with construction

terminology. However, the study findings revealed that the trainings received by the

graduates to make structural designs and to use design software are not enough for them to
be highly competitive in construction industry. Furthermore, working under pressure, not

knowing enough and being afraid of failure are the most common problems encountered by

a newly employed civil engineer as perceived by the graduates and employers. As soon as

the graduates step into the real world, goals related to the opportunities are challenged. But

instead of fearing such problems, they come up with the idea of cooperating with each other

in order to set and achieve their common goals for the success of the company.

In the final analysis, the researchers conclude that despite of insufficient training

received by the graduates on some aspects of their specialization as a civil engineer, they

are able to manage and meet the requirements of their employer through continuous

learning, adopting to a new culture, working in a group, adopting new skills and change,

good work ethics, attention towards health and meeting the expectations of the workplace.

It is also found that employers preferred graduates who are proactive, trainable, cooperative

team members and who can carry all responsibilities with ease and result oriented

individuals with regards toward the achievement of company’s mission.
