Spectrum.” Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience, vol. 43, no. 4, July 2018, pp. 245–253.

EBSCOhost,

The Scholarly Article written by Amy Lynham in April of 2018, “Examining

Cognition across the Bipolar/Schizophrenia Diagnostic Spectrum,” researched the change

in cognition for people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The Measurement and

Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (MATRICS) and Consensus

Cognitive Battery were compared to a group of normal people, people with bipolar

disorder, and people with Schizophrenia. It was found that cognitive impairments do

represents common symptoms across the diagnostic spectrum, meaning one could

possibly be diagnosed with the wrong disorder due to similar symptoms.

The article is meant to target professionals in the field of mental health. Most of

the wording used in the article is very specific and included measurements relevant to the

to data collected. Lyndam, who researches at MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics

and Genomics, Division of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences shows

specific interest in mental disorders such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The piece

directly relates to my research because it includes common symptoms of commonly

misdiagnosed disorders.

The article “Scientists Home In on Cause of Schizophrenia,” written by Benedict

Carey, a New York Times author, on January 28, 2016 reported the scientific

advancements found in the study of schizophrenia. In the article Carey mentions the

study he reports off of was published on Nature Journal and proposed that new

information on what causes the disorder and what “pruning”, a process in which the brain

sheds weaker or unused connections between neurons as a person matures.

The article was written to inform newspaper readers of scientific advancements in

the mental health field. While Carey himself has no credentials in the field, he describes

the process and the results of the the study published accurately. The information

obtained from this newspaper article will go directly into my research for the processes in

which schizophrenia is determined and some of the opposing views on schizophrenia.

Gives all the basic information about the disorder< this includes the common symptoms,

treatments risk factors, as well as resources for people with the disorder to follow. This is a really

well written source getting straight to the point and not including redundant information. It

delves deeper into each category by including types of symptoms and what each means for a

person doing research.

While the author is not stated, it is assumed that this information was written up

by a committee and is an agreed upon informative article about schizophrenia. I can use all of the

information in this article to contribute to my research because it is common information that can

be easily explained and described in a research report.
