NAT Self Analysis

My overall performance score was 72.8%. This calculates to 131 questions answered

correctly out of a total 180. I had a 76 percentile ranking compared with other nursing students

overall. The area with the lowest score was in “Diagnostic Procedures.” I scored a 43.8%

compared to the normed 67%. The area with the highest score was in “Making Nursing

Judgments.” I scored an 86.7% compared to the normed 70%. It is important to also note that I

scored 81.3% in “Safety and Infection Control” when compared with the normed score of 62%.

While this was not my highest category score overall, it was the category that I scored the

highest in comparison to the normed score.

In discussing the validity of these results, I agree with the score I earned. I did a fair job

given the circumstances of the exam. There was a lot of movement and distractions with people

knocking on the door, asking questions, and walking in and out of the classroom. I also

experienced some anxiety because my computer was slow to start. It felt as if everyone else was

already 5-10 minutes into testing before my computer could start up and be functional. I had to

restart it several times before testing began and I was nervous because it was the last available

computer in the room. I also believe I would’ve been able to organize my thought process better

if I would’ve had a white board to write on to help better determine the correct answers.

Furthermore, I believe that even though I tried to take the test very seriously, I still found myself

getting bored and distracted after answering so many questions. I know I would not feel this way

during the actual NCLEX exam however.

When I concentrate on studying and am in the right mindset to stay focused, I can

accomplish a multitude of tasks. I easily recall written text and things that are emphasized during

lecture. During tests, I often recall something I heard a professor strongly emphasize to the class.

It’s almost as if I can hear the professor speaking directly in my head. I also do well with writing.

I rewrite notes over and over to better organize and emphasize what I need to learn. Likewise, I

feel I am strong at focusing on my weak subject areas and begin studying topics that are most

important before moving on to the lesser important topics.

When I am genuinely focused, I tend to study for a very long time and cover the material

all at once. I like to accomplish all tasks at once so that I have none left to do at a later time. I

realize this is not the ideal study habit because not everything can be retained in one study

session. This would be considered a study weakness. Although I can stay focused for a lengthy

time, it’s not ideal to study for so long and not retain the information completely. Another

weakness is that although I like to get things done when it comes to school work and studying, I

do tend to procrastinate. I don’t procrastinate studying due to lack of initiative to complete the

task at hand, rather, I procrastinate studying until I know I am able to concentrate and have a

focused mind. This reflection is helping me to grasp my strengths and weaknesses for studying

and have a better balance of time devoted towards reviewing for NCLEX. Although it was time

consuming to develop a calendar of study materials and topics, I feel more at ease and better

prepared to accomplish reviewing materials before the test in a few months.

My ideal study environment is very similar to the classic testing environment. I like the

room quiet with no distractions or sound, ample lighting, and sufficient time to focus. The only

difference between my studying habits and typical tests is that I sit on my couch to study instead

of at a desk or table. I do this because I like to stay comfortable while studying and to be able to

have more room to lay out all my notes and textbooks on the couch.

Through analyzing the results and question remediation, I have established a list of areas

and specific topics that I should review. My top priority would be to review diagnostic

procedures. I scored 43.8% in this category compared to the normed score of 67%. This was my

lowest category below the normed percentile. Questions regarding diagnostic procedures that I

scored incorrect were on the following topics: herniated disc, labor and birth, anemia, epilepsy,

fetal alcohol syndrome, cholangiography, sigmoidoscopy, paracentesis, and wound infection. I

have incorporated these topics onto my study calendar and will be sure to devote ample time to

review.

I scored 61.1% in “Setting Priorities” compared to the normed score of 70%. I scored

66.7% in “Communication” compared to a normed 69%, and 75% in “Management of Care”

compared to a normed 76%. In “Understanding Concepts” I scored just a fraction of a percent

below the norm of 65%, with my score being 64.7%. Also, in the category of “Planning” I scored

69.8% which was just a hair bellowed the normed 70%. I also find it noteworthy to mention that

I only scored slightly above the normed percentage of 66 in the “Assessment” category. My

score was 66.7%. I noted this because only in these six areas I scored below or only slightly

above the normed percentile. In all other categories on the report sheet, I scored well above the

normed percentile. I scored 15-16.7% above in many categories such as “Making Nursing

Judgments,” “Evaluation,” “Safe and Effective Care Environment,” and “Women.” I also

compiled a list of categories of questions that I struggled with. I missed 3 questions on mental

health, specifically, anxiety, suicide, and schizophrenia. I also missed 3 on growth and

development, specifically regarding infants, preschool age, and the older adult. I missed 2

questions each on hearing impairment, labor and birth, and therapeutic communication. I have

ensured to devote 2-3 days on my study calendar each to cover these topics. In reflection of this

assignment, I believe it has helped me establish a foundation on what I know and do not know.

Overall, it was a daunting task to test on 180 questions, but I have been able to reflect upon my

knowledge base and target areas that need improvement.
