PROPO SAL FOR DEVELOPMENT OF XFD UNIT

Objective The objective of this paper is to describe “X-Ray Film Digitizer Unit” [ XFD ] to digitize
traditional X-Ray Films with DICOM support suitable for deploying on PACS Servers.

Short Description XFD Unit digitizes traditional X-Ray Films for storing, searching, analyzing and
manipulating images with annotation suitable for PACS Server supporting DICOM standards. The XFD
Unit is composed of three units (a) Film Scanning Unit (b) Microcomputer Unit and (c) Operator’s
Console. XFD Unit scan films one at a time as X-Ray Film is loaded on “Film Scanning Unit” by operator.
An ADF (automatic document feeder) is not supported. It supports up to A3 size of X-Ray Film. An easy
to follow steps on “Operator’s Console” performs (a) film scanning, (b) process images according to
DICOM, (c) makes query to CIS/HIS/RIS database for patient’s information if XFD is connected with
centralized databases and (d) prepares everything for storing on PACS Server. XFD Unit stores 1000
digitized images on its own internal storage media. XFD Unit supports a simple web client portal for
retrieval of images by remote users extending its applications to Telemedicine.

Film Scanning Unit [1] is the core of XFD Unit. It scans X-Ray films. The unit looks like a standard
“Paper Flatbed Scanner” that scan thick black and white films with controlled illuminations suitable for X-
Ray Films. The unit connects to “Microcomputer Unit”. The “Film Scanning Unit” is equipped with (a) cold
cathode illuminations with instant lighting (b) thermal controls and (c) high resolution optical system.

Microcomputer Unit [2] is the brain of XFD Unit. It communicates with “Film Scanning Unit”. It performs
(a) image capturing (b) image manipulations (c) query CIS/HIS/RIS database for patient’s information and
(d) store processed X-Ray images to PACS Server according to DICOM Standards. The “Microcomputer
Unit” provides simple GUI compatible to “Touch Screen” as “Operator’s Console”. The “Microcomputer
Unit” is configured to self-start with embedded OS and Kiosk with supporting software tools like (a) XFD
Control Program (b) XFD DICOM Program and (c) Web Services.

Operator’s Console Unit [3] is the GUI for XFD. It provides easy to access, user friendly graphical touch
screen to manage XFD processes. The Operator’s Console is replaceable by any standard LCD monitor.
