INTRODUCTION

Studying is important because it is essential for a person to develop a

complete education and provides students with opportunity to develop study

habits, time management skills and self-discipline. Homework is a form of studying

that helps students learn, there are three types of homework. First is practice

homework that allows you to review what was taught in class, it helps you increase

your ability to comprehend the material. Second is preparation homework, which

help you prepare for an in class assignment or activity, this type of homework is

generally research based or in the form of a brainstorming exercise. Third is

extention homework which is typically a project that is a long term assignment it

requires the most independent work outside of the classroom.

Working is good for our health and well being, it contributes to other people

happiness, helps us to build confidence and self esteem and reward us financially.

Working also enable us to earn money, money is important aspect of peoples lives

because it allows us to pay for many o life’s necessities, such as food water

clothing and most especially shelter.

If you do this both at the same time there are disadvantage for you, one of

the disadvantage of being student while holding a job is that they are often short

on time and find themselves with limited time to study, sleep, and maintain healthy

eating habits. Some working students find themselves without enough time to eat

right, instead of consuming healthy foods such as fruit and whole grains, working

students often grab a quick meal comprised of low quality foods that contains sugar
and high sodium, there’s a high variety of dangers surrounding the consumption

of high sugar meals. For instance it causes insulin resistance within the body which

further leads to type of diabetes and other lifestyle diseases.

If poor eating habits continue over an extended period of time, this will

increase the risk of obesity and the development of lifestyle related chronic

diseases, eating unhealthy diet could also lead to obesity. Low levels of physical

activity and poor nutrition are common reasons for this high incidence rate, it may

not seem important to working students while in high school or college, the

negative outcomes will prove to be a growing concern as they get older. Students

work to support there everyday expenses like tuition fee, foods, and etc. Some

negative effects are higher risk of dropping out, delayed graduation rates, and

negative effects on academic performances. None workers average 17.0 hours of

studying per week and part time workers study 15.7 hours a week. Full time

workers attend class less time per week.

Money is the main key in college in which students acquire tremendous

amount of debt to pay off. There is psychological and physical toll that takes upon

students who try to do it both. From working and attending school, stress become

the main setback in which affects there academic performances, stress was a main

cause for a student to become emotional and exhausted. Stress plays the main

role in all factors for the a student attending a university.

Lack of sleep, it may affect the performance of a student, instead of listening

some are sleeping because of being tired of work.

LITERATURE REVIEWS
Students engaged in part-time and sometime full-time employment while

studying is increasingly a common phenomenon everywhere. Steinberg et al.

(1981) stated over 30years ago that working while studying provides students with

quite naturally an indication of the requirements that will be needed to function

effectively in one Õs later career ( Schill,McCartin, & Meyer, 1985). In recent years,

further studies found that students who are working part-time can easily develop

team working, communication, costumer care and practical skills (Lucas &

Lammont, 1998; Curtis & Lucas, 2001).Students can directly relate the

experiences of working part-time to enhance and improve their academic

knowledge, motivation and employment prospects (Curtis & Shani, 2002;Curtis &

Williams, 2002). Consequently, a number of researches have concluded that a

combination of financial needs and the opportunity to gain experiences will

ultimately enhance career opportunities in the future (Harvey, 2000; Devlin, James

& Grigg, 2008;Nonis & Hudson, 2006). According to the research conducted by

Watts and Pickering (2000), while working part-time and studying full-time has a

variety of positive outcomes, respondents generally viewed part-

time employment as a necessity to survive in the contemporary highereducation

sphere. In Manthei and GilmoreÕs (2005) study, it is said that the money earned

from part-time employment was typically spent on essential living expenses. From

the perspective of students themselves, part-time work is often an introduction to

the real world which will assist them both in personal and career development

especially in higher education sector (Tymon, 2013; Tomlinson, 2007). Higher

education institutions should identify opportunities to increase the extent to which

students could be more familiar with work and expose them to educational, part-

time vocational and career experiences (Yorke, 2004; Glover, Law & Youngman,

2002).

ABSTRACT

This study looked into the effects of working while studying on the

students who are working. Especially, it determined the significant differences on

working and studying.

The study is consisted of 16 males and 16 females randomly

selected students of Benguet National High School-main. A questionnaire was

used to collect data and table data analusis was used in order to get the results of

the study.

Findings showed that working while studying can affect the students

academic performances, both male and female are being affected by this kind of

performance. Some are dropping out because of working, they chooses to work

rather than studying because of being impatient in having a work, but they have a

reason why they choose to work for example financial expenses.

RECOMMENDATION
To some students who are experiencing studying while working is a

hard task. We have some recommendation on how you can do both without any

hard time. First, lets discuss student whom experiencing this. They find it stressful

to handle both task at the same time, this give them lack of interest in one thing

either they do their studies or go to work.

We have some recommendation on how to solve this kind of

problem. One is you can do a plan on book on how to manage your time right, all

you have to do is to list all your task and set a time for or date on every each of

them so you can know when one of your task is going to happen, this can help you

to balance your work while doing other things like studying. If your were not doing

anything or you are have a free time you can set it as a working hour so that the

rest will be studying time. If you are doubting that something will happen plan for

the unexpected things so that you will be prepared. You have to learn how to

manage your stress all you have to do is to have some exercise, balance your

healthy diet, sleep early and don’t forget to take care of your self. When you are

successfully done in any task treat yourself relax in time of weekend so you have

courage to do more works. Always think on the positive thoughts not more on

negative thoughts, just focus on your goal to finish your studies, think why you are

doing that, think of your family, think of your own future, and most specially never

lose faith in GOD always pray and ask for more strength for you,

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

Working while studying can really affects your daily life. Studying

while working is a good doings of people, but it can affect their/our studies. Due to

the increasing of the students who has less time for their academic studies, we

had o our research about it. Wherein, we as a group made a tally of the

questionnaires that were been answered by those working students ( 16 boys and

16 girls), most of them help them financially.

Some of them also has the highest tallying on enhancing there skills,

though most of their answers were about the bad effects wherein they put the

check mark on the highest possibility.(3 seldom, 4 all the time). those bad effects

are like, less time for academic studies, affects there academic performances, and

lack of sleep. This effect really affects the students to have lower grades or can

also lead them on dropping out. But according to our survey some has a good

effects like it helps them financially, helps them build there confidences, and they

can apply it in the future.

Therefore, even though we are working it can also helps us in our

daily life even if it has some bad effects on our academic performances, those are

just struggles for us to be tested so don’t lose hope because god has a purpose

for you in the future. This struggles may helps us to be successful in the future,

studying is the biggest weapon that may have in life even if were poor this is a

treasure for us, so we must give importance in studying

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study intends to answer the following question.

1. What are the student’s perceptions of working while studying?

2. What are the positive and negative effects of working while studying?

3. What are priority activities should be done by the working students?

METHODOLOGY
This section deals with the research design, the respondents and the

location of the study. It presents how the data will be collected, the instruments to

be used in gathering the data and how the data will be treated.

Research Design

This study will make use of quantitative research using descriptive

inferential research design. It intends to use structured questions to elicit specific

answers and clarify respondents. It provides the effects of working while studying.

Population and Local of the Study

This study will be conducted to grade 9 and 10 students of Benguet National

High School- Main located at Wangal La Trinidad Benguet.

The researchers will recruit at least (60) participants from the

aforementioned school using purposive sampling. Their age ranges approximately

from ages 15 to 16, because at this age a person discovers how to confront the

problems, and she/he learns how to live with it. They also establish there own

personality at this age. The researchers took advantage of these factors to see

how much a persons academic performance is affected by this kind of problems.

Furthermore, it is also a way of knowing how the school community can help these

young people cope with their situation.

Data Collection Instruments

The data needed for this research will be obtained through questionnaire

survey, participants who are presently enrolled under the public secondary school
of Benguet National High School main. Questioning and note taking will be

employed to document important data. English will be used as dominant languages

in the questionnaire survey.

Data Collection Procedure

Questionnaire survey will be used in the data gathering. Participants will be

informed of the purpose of the survey and the study before the data collection

procedure will be conducted. The question will be answered by 1,2,3,4,5 only.

Treatment of Data

All data will be transcribed; it will be coded and emergent themes will be

summarized from how the survey has made by the researches.

Name of the participants will be shown to known there identity, instead to

represent each participants. Each of them will be assured that their responses to

the survey will be confidential
