Operation Research

Note: All the students are requested to submit the assignment in well organize manner on A4
Size paper on or before the 20th Feb.

Formulate the following LPP:

1. The manager of an oil refinery must decide on optimum mix of two possible blending
processes of which the input and output production runs are as follows:

Process Input output

Curd A Curd B Gasoline A Gasoline B

1 6 4 6 9
2 5 6 5 5

The maximum amounts available of curds A and B are 250 units and 200 units
respectively. Market demand shows that at least 150 units of gasoline X and 130 units of
gasoline Y must be produced. The profit per production run from process 1 and process 2
are Rs. 4 and 5 respectively. Formulate the problem for maximizing the profit.

2. A factory engaged in the manufacturing of pistons, rings and valves for which the profits
per unit are Rs. 10,6 and 4 respectively and wants to decide the most profitable mix. It
takes one hour of preparatory work, ten hours of matching and two hours of packing and
allied formalities for a piston. Corresponding time requirements for rings and valves are
1,4 and 2 and 1,5 and 6 hours respectively. The total number of hours available for
preparatory work, machining and packing and allied formalities are 100,600 and 300
respectively. Determine the most profitable mix, assuming that what al produced can be
sold. Formulate the LPP.

3. A Retired person wants to invest up to an amount of Rs.30,000 in fixed income securities.

His broker recommends investing in two Bonds: Bond A yielding 7% and Bond B
yielding 10%. After some consideration, he decides to invest at most of Rs.12,000 in
bond B and at least Rs.6,000 in Bond A. He also wants the amount invested in Bond A to
be at least equal to the amount invested in Bond B. What should the broker recommend if
the investor wants to maximize his return on investment? Formulate & Solve graphically.

4. A chemical company produces two products, X and Y. Each unit of product X requires 3
hours on operation I and 4 hours on operation 11, while each unit of product Y requires 4
hours an operation I and 5 hours on operation II. Total available of time for operations I
and II is 20 hours and 26 hours respectively. The production of each unit of product Y
also results n two units of a by-product Z at no extra cost.
5. Product X sells at profit of Rs 10/unit, while Y sells at profit of Rs 20/unit. By-product Z
brings a unit profit of Rs6 if sold; in case it cannot be sold, the destruction cost is
Rs4/unit. Forecasts indicate that not more than 5units of z can be sold. Formulate the L.P.
model to determine the quantities of X and Y to be produced, keeping z in mind, so that
the profit earned is maximum.

6. A company has two grades of inspectors I and II who are to be assigned for a quality
control inspection. Atleast 1500 pieces to be inspected in an 8-hour day. Grade I
inspector can check 20 in an hour, with an accuracy of 96%. A grade II inspector checks
14 pieces per hour with an accuracy of 92%.Wage of grade I inspector are Rs 5 per hour
while that of grade II inspector is Rs 4 per hour. An error made by any inspector cost Rs
3 to the company. If there are, in all, 10 grade I inspectors and 15 grades II inspector in
the company, find the optimal assignment of inspectors that minimizes the daily inspect
cost.

7. A person wants to decide the constituents of a diet which will fulfill his daily
requirements of proteins, fats and carbohydrates at the minimum cost. The choice is to be
made from four different types of food. The yields per unit of these foods are given in
table.
Cost per unit
Food type Yield per unit
(Rs)
Proteins Fats Carbohydrates
1 3 2 6 45
2 4 2 4 40
3 8 7 7 85
4 6 5 4 65
Minimum Requirements 800 200 700
Formulate linear programming model for the problem.

8. An electronic company is engaged in the production of two Components C1 and C2 used

in radio sets. Each unit of C1 costs the company Rs5 in wages and Rs 5 in Material, while
each of C2 cost the company Rs 25 in wages and Rs 15 in material. The company sells
both product on one-period credit terms but the company’s labor and material expenses
must be paid in cash. The selling price of C1 is Rs 30 per units and of C2 is Rs 70 per
units. Because of the strong monopoly of the company for these components it is
assumed that the company can sell at the prevailing prices as many units as it produces.
The company’s production capacity is however is limited by two considerations. First at
the beginning of period 1 the company has initial balance of Rs. 4000 (cash plus bank
credit plus collection from past credit sales). Second the company has available in each
period 2000 hours of machine time and 1400 hours of assembly time. The production of
C1 requires 3 hours of machine time and 2 hours of assembly time whereas the
production of C2 each C2 requires 2 hours of machine time and 3 hours of assembly
time. Formulate this problem as a LP model so as to maximize the total profit of the
company.
9. A pharmaceutical company produces two pharmaceutical products: A and B. Production
of both products requires the same process, I and II. The production of B results also in a
by-product C at no extra cost. The product A can be sold at a profit of Rs 3 per unit and B
t a profit of Rs 8 per unit. Some of this by- product can be sold at a unit profit of Rs.2, the
remainder has to be destroyed and the destruction cost is Rs.1 per unit. Forecasts show
that only up to 5units of C can be sold. The company gets 3 units of C for each unit of B
produced. The manufacturing times are 3hours per unit for A on process I and II,
respectively, and 4 hours and 5 hours per unit for B on process I and II, respectively.
Because the product C results from producing B, no time is used in producing C. The
available times are 18 and 21 hours of process I and II, respectively. Formulate this
problem as an LP model to determine the quantity of A and B which should be produced,
keeping C in mind, to make the highest total profit to the company

10. The Osgood County refuse department runs two recycling centers. Center 1 costs $40 to
run for an eight hour day. In a typical day 140 pounds of glass and 60 pounds of
aluminum are deposited at Center 1. Center 2 costs $50 for an eight-hour day, with 100
pounds of glass and 180 pounds of aluminum deposited per day. The county has a
commitment to deliver at least 1540 pounds of glass and 1440 pounds of aluminum per
week to encourage a recycler to open up a plant in town. How many days per week
should the county open each center to minimize its cost and still meet the recycler’s.

11. Consider this scenario: your school is planning to make toques and mitts to sell at the
winter festival as a fundraiser. The school’s sewing classes divide into two groups – one
group can make toques, the other group knows how to make mitts. The sewing teachers
are also willing to help out. Considering the number of people available and time
constraints due to classes, only 150 toques and 120 pairs of mitts can be made each
week. Enough material is delivered to the school every Monday morning to make a total
of 200 items per week. Because the material is being donated by community members,
each toque sold makes a profit of $2 and each pair of mitts sold makes a profit of $5.

12. A company produces 2 types of hats A and B. Every hat A requires twice as much labour
time as the second hat B. if the company produces only hat B then it can produces a total
500 hats per day. The market limits daily sales of hat A and B to 150 and 250
respectively. The profit on hat A and B are Rs 8 and Rs. 5 respectively. Solve the
graphically to get optimum solution.
