Dominican University | Graduate School of Library and Information Science LIS 773-01 - School Libraries ASSIGNMENT: School Library Program Assessment & Presentation Students will coordinate to create a presentation of no more than twenty (20) minutes that describes an assessment of a districts school library program using either Linking for Learning or AASLs Planning Guide for Empowering Learners. Due date Presentation is due April 15. What to do A former requirement of receiving the Illinois State Library per capita grant was for the school board to assess the districts school library program using Linking for Learning. The latest application process no longer requires the program assessment; however, a discussion on ISLMANET indicated that many school librarians wanted to petition their districts to allow them to present to their boards. Using the 3 edition of Linking for Learning (L4L) or the AASL Planning Guide for Empowering Learners and other appropriate resources, develop a program assessment to present to your school board. The presentation may focus on just one of the three program components from L4L (Teaching for Learning, Learning Environment, and Leadership) or on one of the four program components from AASL (Developing Visions for Learning, Teaching for Learning, Building the Learning Environment, and Empowering Learning Through Leadership.) You and your partners will represent librarians (and possibly other stakeholders) from schools in your district and make your presentation to the class as if we were the school board and disinterested community members. Use whatever tool(s) you deem necessary to make your presentation. Every group member must participate in the oral presentation. Refer to these resources to help guide your development of the assessment: Find general information on the FY2013 Public School Library Per Capita Grant: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/grants/schoolpercapgrant.html See the Executive Summary and other resources associated with The Illinois Study: Powerful Libraries Make Powerful Learners: http://www.islma.org/IllinoisStudy.htm Review the first few pages of Creating a Commitment for School Libraries, the result of a retreat held in spring, 2005 as a result of the Illinois Study: http://www.alliancelibrarysystem.com/illinoisstudy/Notes.pdf The resources listed here are also available on the class site under Helpful Sites. What I will look for This assignment familiarizes you with a range of resources to help you market your program and advocate for school library users, including evaluation guides in Linking for Learning and the AASL online planning guide, the findings of the Illinois Study, and your own passion for the programs you help build and support. I will look for evidence that you based your assessment on the resources of Linking for Learning or the AASL online planning guide, that you and your partners coordinated your efforts in the development and delivery of the presentation, and that the presentation reflects an effort to advocate for library users.
