Quotes on Andres Iniesta

September 8, 2017

Andrés Iniesta Luján was the first team captain of FC Barcelona and is also known as one
of the players who has appeared most for the Club in its history. Elegant and modest, he is
recognized as one of the best players in the world. Andrés Iniesta joined FC Barcelona as a
twelve-year-old in 1996 after scouts had spotted him at the Brunette Tournament playing for
Albacete. From the start he progressed rapidly through the club's various youth teams and
was promoted to the Barça B team for the 2000-2001 season, where he almost immediately
became the team's main playmaker under coach Josep Maria Gonzalvo. Andrés' dream was to
make the first team. His dream of making the first team finally came true in October 2002
when he was picked to play in the Champions League game against Club Brugge in Belgium.
Andrés Iniesta made his official debut for the Club on 29 October 2002 in Champions League
against Club Brugge. The match ended with a Barça's victory (0-1).Van Gaal's Barça won
that evening and Andrés made an excellent impression. Now as a recognized squad member,
Iniesta had established a place for himself through hard work allied to his undoubted natural
skills. In the shadow of some of the team's bigger names, Andres became a key piece of the
League winning team in 2004-2005, winding up as Rijkaard's most used player, figuring in
35 of the 38 league games. Iniesta also played 8 Champions League matches, scoring twice.
But he really established himself as a first team player in the 2005-2006 season. Playing in
central midfield in place of Xavi, who was sidelined for a long time with injury, Iniesta
became one of the key players in the Barça side that won the League and the Champions
League. He played in 33 League fixtures and 11 in the Champions League.

Iniesta continued to develop in the 2006-2007 season and was one of the players most used
by Frank Rijkaard in that campaign. He played in 37 out of 38 League games, scoring 6
goals, his best return to date. In the 2007-08 season, and by now wearing the number 8 shirt,
the midfielder continued to be an ever present in the side until a knee injury sidelined him for
the last few games of the campaign.

In the 2008/2009 season, Iniesta was even better than ever. Playing in a central or wide role
he delighted the whole world with his amazing dribbling skills. He grew into one of the
essential components of the Barça engine, and took the team to the Champions League final
in Rome thanks to his famous goal in the final seconds of the semifinal at Stamford Bridge.

Injuries affected his contribution in the 2009-10 season when he was already one of the
leading players in the team. He played 29 matches in the league, 9 in the Champions League
and 3 in the Cup, and coupled to his performances for Spain, was named the second best
player in the world during the Ballon d'Or awards, behind his team mate Leo Messi. In the
2010/11 season, Iniesta was back to his best and in an injury free campaign he helped the
team to another Liga and another Champions League. He played 50 matches, his second
highest tally as a Barça player.

On April 14, 2012, when he came on as substitute against Levante, Iniesta made his 400th
appearance for FC Barcelona, only the tenth player to make that milestone. A week later, on
April 21, 2012, Iniesta’s record run of 55 league games without defeat came to an end against
Real Madrid.

He played 46 games in the 2011/2012 season, contributing eight goals, and also collecting yet
more winner medals, this time for the Spanish Super Cup, the European Super Cup, the
Club World Cup and the Copa del Rey. It was also his finest goalscoring season in Europe,
with three goals.

He had a fine 2012/2013 season playing 48 games and scoring six goals as the team marched
to the title with 100 points and Iniesta was consecrated as one of the best players in world
football.

In 2013/2014, he made it to a massive 500 games for FC Barcelona in a game with Atlético
Madrid. And the game against Real Sociedad in the cup at the Camp Nou was his 50th in that
competition. He also scored his 50th Barça goal this term, and against old rivals Real Madrid
in a dramatic 4-3 road win.

In 2014/15, Iniesta surpassed both Víctor Valdés and Migueli to become the player with the
third highest number of appearances for FC Barcelona, topped only by his good friends Xavi
(767) and Puyol (593). And he was also named man of the match of the Champions League
Final that Barça won 3-1 against Juventus in Berlin.

Andrés Iniesta has also been a regular feature of the Spanish national side since the 2006
World Cup, and at Euro 2012 was named player of the tournament in Poland and Ukraine,
where he also collected his second winners medal. But Iniesta’s finest hour in the national
jersey was July 11, 2010, when the midfielder’s goal just four minutes from the end of extra
time against Holland won Spain the World Cup for the first time ever. He has won everything
there is to win in world football at both club and international level, and still has many more
years of top level football ahead of him.
Andres Iniesta has thrown his Barcelona future into doubt after admitting he had not yet
signed a new deal with the club. The 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season
and, in an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais, admitted he was considering his future
for the first time.

"Right now, I have still not signed a new contract," he said.

"I have felt many strange feelings for the first time, but I think this may be normal.

"This is a scenario that, probably three years ago, I could never have imagined.

"Let's say that I am considering my future when I didn't do it before."

Iniesta has been integral to Barcelona's success in recent years, winning four La Liga titles
and Champions League trophies since making his senior debut in 2002. The Spain
international also conceded Barcelona faced a difficult challenge in wrestling the La Liga title
away from Real Madrid.

"Madrid is a great team, with the best players in the world, but I want to say that our
challenge is to find what we lost last year.

"The Supercopa was a painful defeat because it was the first title we could win but they were
very effective.

"All the defeats, especially against Madrid, always raise questions, [as does] the situation that
has taken place in the last few weeks."

Iniesta's future at the Nou Camp could depend on whether Barcelona are able to secure a deal
to bring Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho to the club. Liverpool have already rejected
three multi-million pound bids for the 25-year-old, with Barcelona rumoured to be preparing
a third and final £120m offer.

Here are some of the best quotes about one of the greatest players to have played for
Barcelona: Andres Iniesta.

Andres Iniesta

Every coach out there admires the Spaniard, and would love to have him on the team. Even
players from Barca’s biggest rival only have great things to say about Andreas. Here are
some quotes on Andres Iniesta:

“Iniesta is the boyfriend that every mother wants her daughter to have. The figures over his
career tell you all you need to know. He is a magical player. There are few players in the
world that can compare to him.” — Sergio Ramos

“I played him as a false winger, central midfielder, deep midfielder and just behind the striker
and he was always excellent.” — Frank Rijkaard

“When I see him play these days, he reminds me of Xavi. He was always a top quality player.
He started very young with us, and it’s crazy to see how he has gone on to make so much
history.” — Ronaldinho

“He reminds me of myself.” — Zinedine Zidane

“When I said Iniesta was the world’s best, you laughed. Now you can see I’m right.”” —
Samuel Eto’o

“When he has the ball, it’s like everything else stops – like the camera is going in slow
motion.” — Fernando Torres

“The press often ask me about whether Messi or Ronaldo is the best, but for me something is
very clear: Andres Iniesta is the number one. He is able to do even more difficult things on
the pitch. He is magic with the ball and so influential.” — David Silva
“He is the complete footballer. He can attack and defend, he creates and scores.” — Vicente
del Bosque

“He’s fantastic. He makes the team work. The way he finds passes, his movement and ability
to create space is incredible. He’s so important for Barcelona.” — Sir Alex Ferguson

“Iniesta’s the most inventive player in Spanish football at the moment. He’s like Harry Potter.
One, two, three and whoosh… he’s past the player. It’s like he has a magic wand.” — Luis
Enrique

“When he has the ball, it’s like everything else stops – like the camera is going in slow
motion.” — Fernando Torres

“Iniesta doesn’t dye his hair, he doesn’t wear earrings and he hasn’t got any tattoos. Maybe
that makes him unattractive to the media but he is the best.” — Pep Guardiola

“…..the one who plays this game the best is Iniesta: he knows exactly when to go forward
and when to drop back. He picks the right moment to do everything: when to dribble, when to
speed things up and when to slow things down. And I think that’s the only thing that can’t be
taught or bought. You can learn how to shoot and how to control the ball, but being aware of
everything that’s happening out on the pitch – that’s something you’re either born with or
you’re not.” — Juan Roman Riquelme

“It’s not that difficult to play well and win titles in a team like Barcelona, but it’s in the
national side where you see a player’s true class. That was the case with figures like Pele,
Diego Maradona and Zinedine Zidane. With Spain, Iniesta has shown that he is among the
best players of all time and that’s why I rate him higher than Messi or Ronaldo. Even though
the latter two have incredible scoring records for their clubs, they still haven’t won anything
with Argentina or Portugal respectively.” — Boris Becker
