The existing monuments form an ideal order
among themselves, which is modified by the
introduction of the new (the really new) work of
art among them. The existing order is complete
before the new work arrives; for order to persist
ever so slightly after the supervention of novelty,
the whole existing order must be, if ever so
slightly, altered; and so the relations,
proportions, values of each work of art toward
the whole are readjusted; and this is conformity
between the old and the new.
T. S. Eliot, ‘Tradition and the Individual Talent’
Modernity
The pleasure we derive from the
representation of the present is due not
only to the beauty it can be clothed in, but
also to its essential quality of being the
present […] Modernity is the transient, the
fleeting, the contingent; it is one half art,
the other being the eternal, the immutable.
Ch. Baudelaire, ‘The Painter of Modern Life’
• […] in or about December, 1910, human
character changed.[…] All human relations
have shifted—those between masters and
servants, husbands and wives, parents
and children. And when human relations
change there is at the same time a change
in religion, conduct, politics, and literature.
