READ ALOUD LESSON PLAN

Focus of the Lesson: Multicultural Appreciation and Understanding
Grade Level: Preschool

Standard (s):
- The student will listen to multi-syllable words (Block 3: Phonological Awareness)
- The student will turn pages one at a time from the front to the back of a book (Block 5: Print and Book Awareness)
- The student will identify the front of a book (Block 5: Print and Book Awareness)

Objective(s)
- Through this lesson, I am aiming to help the students to understand print better and how picture books are set up. I
want them to demonstrate a knowledge of the front and back of the book and how to turn pages to read further. I
also want them to be able to show comprehension of the context of the book through answering prompting
questions before, during, and after the read aloud.

Materials
- Book about a young boy who travels around with his mother throughout the day completing a variety of errands
o One Afternoon, written by Yumi Heo

Procedures
I. Opener— When looking at the front of the book, I want the students I am reading with to be able to find a
mother and child in the window of the townhouse. I will flip the book in many directions and ask them to help
show me the correct way to read a book while prompting them to show me the front, back, and inside of the
book. I will explain to them that this book is about a boy and his mom doing errands, and I will ask the
students what they like to do with their parents on the weekends.
II. Body— Since my book has a lot of the story within the pictures rather than only the words, I want to be sure to
pause on each page so the students have time to explore the entire illustration of that page in context to the
words I read. When we get to the page on the Laundromat, I will stop to explain what a laundromat is and ask
the students if they have ever been there. Then, as the book progresses I will stop at the page where they go to
the pet store and ask the students to point out and name the animals on that page. My final interjection during
the reading will be on the page where the El Train passes by and ask them if they have ever seen the train
while they are at school (since it passes by).
III. Closing— I will ask the students to list two or three things that Minho did with his mother during their errands.
Hopefully the students will provide their input and then I will follow up with asking what errand is their
favorite to go on with their parents?
