Understanding ESI Hasp Keys

If your hasp key (dongle) is not working, here are the most common problems:

1. You are trying to use the license via Remote Desktop (or similar). Our workstation hasp keys do
not allow this. Only a network key will allow use of remote sessions.

2. You installed the 64-bit version of Groundwater Vistas 6 but you are using the Standard level
license. The standard version (Product 7 – see below) is only licensed as a 32-bit application.
This will work on a 64-bit computer. If this is the case, you must uninstall the 64-bit version and
install the 32-bit version. Make sure to install from our full installer and not the update installer.
Once you install the full version, then you may download and install any updates. Note that
Groundwater Vistas Version 7 does allow use of the 64bit version.

3. You may need to install the drivers for the hasp key manually. These can be downloaded from
our web site at www.groundwatermodels.com (click Clients/Downloads and look under the
Utilities category for Hasp Key drivers). After installing, it is a good idea to reboot before trying
the hasp key again.

4. There is an expired Security code in the system registry. To check, select Help|About and click
the Register button. If there is a code at the top of the dialog, you need to remove it. To do
this, right-click the program file (gwv.exe for Groundwater Vistas or aquifer.exe for
AquiferWin32), choose “Run as Administrator”, remove the security code, click OK, and exit.

To find out what software/version is licensed on your hasp key, open a web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer or
Firefox) and type http://localhost:1947 in the URL area at the top. This will bring up Safenet’s Admin Control
Center Help as shown below.
Click “Sentinel keys” from the Administration Options menu on the left side of the window. This will
identify all HASP dongles on your system. All ESI dongles should have a Vendor number of 88961 and it
should show the type as “HASP HL Pro”, as shown below. The second dongle identified below is for
MODFLOW-Surfact Version 3. The HydroGeoLogic, Inc. vendor number is 82287. In the image below,
key # is a MODFLOW-Surfact key and the other 3 are from ESI.
Since we are using different products on our keys, you can click the “Products” button either on the
right side of the window in the table or from the menu on the left. This will show what products you
have licensed on the HASP key. In the example below, AquiferWin32 version 4, Groundwater Vistas 7
Premium, and Groundwater Vistas 6 Premium were found.
