Reflection on own management and leadership skills

To consider the skills audit and SWOT analysis, personal development reflects on management
and leadership skills. In the past, I had some lacking management and leadership capacity. The
skill audit and SWOT showed most of them lacking. It helped me to identify and analyse the
weaknesses. It enhanced the capability to the own management systems. While doing my
internship in a hospitality firm, I communicated effectively but I had to lack in managing the time.
When it was identified while working for the firm, I tried to resolve the problems & enhance my
quality. Personal development skills had also impacted on the organisation for management and
leadership skills. Analysis of different skills is shown in the skill audit which has been done to
know my skill gaps and development need in management and leadership skills. Decision making,
planning, motivating, coaching and targeting etc skills are assessed in the process. The reflection
of my management and leadership portrays that I could have been more effective in the
management and leadership of people. A leader can compete with a different situation that is good
for the organisation. Effective management and leadership can bring to profit for the organisation.

2. Explanation of the transferable skills using relevant theory and
application

Transferable skills are abilities and skills which is helpful for different areas of people living
through providing relevant and helpful skills (Denicolo and Reeves, 2014). It is also a portable
skill that is managing people and organisation. people always assume transferable skills when they
apply to a new job so that it changes the career within the organisation. some transferable skills
are such as teamwork, leadership, personal motivation, communication, analytical skills, listening
and so on. In the assignment considers the following skills-

Supportive Communication:

Supportive communication is a communication style which uses for setting goal and techniques
(Box, 2010). The primary goal of supportive skills communication is resolving conflicts and
achieving a change of situation. The communication systems are used in several interpersonal
interactions such as power differentiate, manager and employee, teacher and student, parent and
child. In the organisation, it is so much effective when more power equal between friends, spouses,
business partners and so on. In the managing context, employees are conflicted in the workplace
where the manager can solve the problem. For example, employees are directed by the manager
and manager are guided by top management. In the workplace, people interaction can create
conflict when the manager or management cannot clear the goal of the organisation. It makes
conflicts between manager and employee or leader. To solve this problem, supportive
communication is essential. Supportive management and leadership skills can reduce the problem.
The leader is providing direction based on the goal. It also helps to set up a goal when a conflict
showing in the organisation. some technique of supportive communication that leader can use in
the organisation. Descriptive language, taking an inclusive approach, focus on the problem and
solution, encouraging productive dialogue are supportive communication techniques in the
organisation that is taken by leadership manager and supportive manager (Box, 2010).

Motivational skills:

Motivation is playing a vital role at the work which can get from internal and external sources. In
the organisation is established based on the goal that is burning desire to achieve by internal

8
motivation. External motivation grows from the bosses, parents, spouse, peers and so on (Watty,
Jackling and Wilson, 2014).

Motivational skills are so much essential for leaders to lead the organisation effectively and in
time. There are a lot of motivational skills which motivates people such as reward, recognition,
extend help, give respect, provide opportunity and so on. it can transfer organisation from current
to higher position because of employee encouragement (Watty, Jackling and Wilson, 2014).

In the management context, teams are created by leaders for operating the work where the
employees are informed to the goal of the work (Mayson and De Klerk, 2011). The leader can
reward for the work to the employees which can more encourage to do it effectively. Motivational
skills are not only motivation speeches but also supportive physically to the work. Employees are
not the same in the organisation as an understanding capability those employees need to physical
motivation. Supportive management and leadership skills are reducing stress for the employee in
the management process. Supportive management skills are helping to the employee through
taking a decision and they can easy to the task through giving right direction. Leadership skills can
motive to reduce boredom, bring new perspective and revenue, lead to job satisfaction and mental
peace, avoid jealousy and prejudice amongst the team, help to gain deadline faster and so on
(Mayson and De Klerk, 2011).

Empowerment:

Empowerment is becoming powerful at the work where people are gotten power from the
organisation (Kennedy and Loeb, 2011). in the personal or employee empowerment is included
such as personal values, skills and goals and ready to our behaviour adjust the goal to be achieved.
Some empowerment skills are such as life coping skills, manipulating skills, intellectual skills,
artistic skills. It also has some personal empowerment dimension which is such as self-awareness,
values, skills, information, goals and so on. those dimensions are empowered to a person in the
organisation (Kennedy and Loeb, 2011).

In the organisational operating systems, employee empowerment is needed to operate effectively.

The employee should be achieved some quality for empowering. Self-awareness is comprising in
the personal character where the employee proves to respond in the situation. Leadership skills
and supportive management skills help to self-motivate through developing positive and negative

9

leader. It can be gained by experience, education, practice, training and so on. knowledge is so
much essential for developing empowerment capability. In the organisation, empowerment skills
use for gaining a particular work. Leader and manager have set up the goal. On the basis of goal,
the employee needs to empower which helps to gain a particular goal. Supportive management
and leadership skills can adjust goal and employee empowerment for gaining desire outcome

communication, emotional intelligence, empathy and so on (Johnson, Siegel and Winch, 2010).
supportive manager and leader easily contact with the employee and they can know about the
reason for conflicting in the firms. When they collect more information about conflict then they
can manage it effectively and quickly. Two parties are conflicting before one or two months which
is unknown for the cause. In the situation, leadership skills find to happen or incident that occurs
in before. In the organisation, supportive management and leadership skills are an effective

10
technique that is helping to manage conflict. It applies to physical interaction with an employee
that helps to understand conflict easily for the seeking of the solution.

presenting for the work. This process helps to do better way in the organisation. Team effectiveness
