Description of achievement and assessment methods:

Description of achievement and assessment methods:
The expected learning outcomes are verified by a written or oral exam. The exam comprises all covered subjects, no
additional means are permitted. By means of general questions it is assessed if the students are able to apply
problem solving thinking on practical examples, e.g. in the frame of the assessment of existing timber structures, by
analyzing these questions and illustrating solutions that are part of the study goals of this module. The answers partly

require particular formulations, partly the checking of multiple-choice answers.

Motivation for the choice of written or oral exams: The contents taught and the achievment of the intended learning
results can best be tested by general questions (transfer thinking). For general questions, either a written or an oral
exam is suitable.

Possibility of re-taking:
In the next semester: Yes
At the end of the
semester: No

(Recommended) requirements:
Timber Structures Basic Module
Timber Structures - Supplementary Modul (Construction of Timber Houses)

Contents:
The mandatory module timber in construction shall present the students some special topics in the application of
timber as a building material. The topics taught in this module can be separated into two main blocks. The first block
offers a comprehensive treatise of the characteristics of timber as a building material. The second block offers insight
into theoretical background and practical issues in selected fields of application of timber in construction. The module
can be divided into the following topics:
- Wood and Wood species, mechanical properties and test methods
- Wood species identification
- Physical properties of wood
- Rheology and time dependent properties inc. composite structures
- Gluing and wood-based products
- Reliability, safety factors and load sharing
- Analysis and FEM modelling of Timber and Connections
- Structures with tropical hardwoods
- Durability and Service Life performance

- Earthquakes and ductility

Study goals:
After the module Timber in Construction, the students shall be able to analyse the characteristics of wood with
respect to its use as a building material. For chosen areas of application of timber in construction, the students shall
be able to evaluate possible solutions.

Teaching and learning methods:

Theis teaching format of this module is lectures. This format, supported by teaching methods as work on the
blackboard and powerpoint presentations is best suited to convey the theoretical basis and background of the
contents presented. Material to illustratively demonstrate the subject presented is provided. In addition, important
experiments are presented and films covering experiments and methods will be shown. The determination of wood
species will be realized individually within an exercise session

Media formats:
Powerpoint presentations, videos, blackboard, scriptum (ppt-slides) of about 200 pages with possible download
(Moodle). Notes of the students, taken during lectures.

Literature:
Scriptum (ppt-slides of the course). Students shall take notes.
