Description of achievement and assessment methods:

The course assessment comprises a 180 minute written examination, which consists of three topics.

The objective of the written exam is to assess whether the essential concepts in concrete structures, including non-
linear section analysis, calculation of deformations, earthquake and fire safety design, design of lateral load resisting
systems and stability checks can be evaluated. In the second topic the students should show, that the essential
actions, construction methods, and design methods of prestressed concrete structures can be derived and evaluated.

The third topic should show that the students are able to manage and derive the essential actions, construction
methods and design methods for concrete bridges. In the limited time of the exam, the learning outcomes of the
module must be demonstrated through problem analysis and execution of a sensible solution.

The examination is divided into two parts.

The first part comprises general questions (60 minutes in duration) which will be multiple choice and/or short answer
for which the student must formulate the answer in their own words. This part of the exam is closed book and no
study aids are permitted. The second part comprises design questions related to the relevant topics of the module
(120 minutes in duration), and all study aids are permitted except for portable computers with a screen
(„Smartphones“, „Laptops“, „Notebooks“, „Portables“ etc.) a programmable calculator.

Possibility of re-taking:
In the next semester: Yes
At the end of the
semester: No

Study goals:
The module „concrete structures“ is composed of the three lectures „Design and Construction of Concrete
Structures“, „prestressed concrete structures” and “concrete bridges”.
Upon completion the first part of the module (“Design and Construction of Concrete Structures“), students will be able
to:
- design concrete structures (mainly high-rise structures) and to evaluate the results of numerical analysis through
simplified calculations
- understand load paths, ways to brace structures and the effect of the bracing on the overall structural system
- apply different methods for the non-linear redistribution of internal forces and deformation calculation
- Design pre-cast structures

- Apply the fundamentals of structural design to evaluate special load cases (earthquakes, impact, fire safety)

Upon completion of the part “prestressed concrete structures”, students will be able to:
- select and evaluate suitable tensioning methods for different areas of application
- design various suitable types of prestressing for statically determinate and indeterminate structures
- determine the internal forces due to prestressing for statically determinate and indeterminate systems
- apply methods to determine the time-dependent behaviour of statically indeterminate systems
- analyze bonded and unbonded prestressed concrete members at the ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state
- analyze losses due to tendon friction, anchor set, elastic shortening, and from creep, shrinkage and relaxation
- understand the common problems and sources of error in existing prestressed concrete structures

Upon completion of the last part “concrete bridges”, students will be able to:
- Design concrete bridges including the selection of a suitable construction method
- Apply methods to determine internal forces and long-term effects for statically indeterminate systems
- Apply the basic principles to estimate the fatigue of concrete bridges according to DIN EN 1992
- Evaluate the specific characteristics and areas of application for externally and internally unbonded prestressed
concrete members building on the course "Principles of prestressed concrete construction"

Teaching and learning methods:

In this course the essential content is generally conveyed in form of a traditional lecture with ongoing support through
a Power Point presentation. Particular aspects or details of importance for the overall understanding are gradually
derived and explained by using the blackboard. For a better understanding of the content, illustrative material is
passed around. Moreover a more-day-lasting excursion will be offered at least. The course material is deepened by
regular, on the progress of the lecture adapted exercises.
In this exercise lessons a gap scripts is used, in which the content of the lecture will be supported and deepened by
calculation examples.
