ASSIGNMENT/RECITATION #2

REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN

BOX YOUR FINAL ANSWER…

Situation 1
A simply supported beam is reinforced with 4-28mm dia. at the bottom and 2-28mm dia. at the top of the
beam. Steel covering to centroid of reinforcement is 70mm at the top and bottom of the beam. The beam
has a total depth of the beam. The beam has a total depth of 400mm and a width of 300mm f’c=30MPa,
fy=415MPa. Use NSCP 2010 & 2001.
Situation 2
A rectangular reinforced concrete beam has b=350mm and d=480mm. Concrete strength f’c = 34MPa and
steel yield strength fy=415MPa. Compression reinforcement, if necessary, will be placed 70mm from the
extreme concrete in compression. For this problem, the dead load moment is 140 KN-m and the live load
moment is 180KN-m. Use NSCP 2010 & 2001.
1. What is the value of the required moment (factored moment) in KN-m?
2. What is the value of the maximum steel ratio when the beam is singly reinforced?
3. What is the required tension steel area in square mm?
Situation 3
A rectangular reinforced concrete beam has a width of 310mm and an effective depth of 490mm.
Concrete compressive strength is 21MPa and steel yield strength is 345 MPa. The beam is reinforced for
tension only. Use NSCP 2010 & 2001.
1. Using 2001 NSCP determine the ultimate moment capacity if the beam is reinforced with five
25mm diameter tension steel.
2. Using 2001 NSCP determine the ultimate moment capacity if the beam is reinforced with six
25mm diameter tension steel.
3. Using 2001 NSCP determine the ultimate moment capacity if the beam is reinforced with nine
25mm diameter tension steel.
4. If the 6m beam carries a superimposed service (unfactored) dead load of 15KN/m and a service
live load of 36KN/m. Unit weight of concrete is 23.5 KN/m3. Determine the design nominal
moment. (Cc= 65mm)
5. If the 6m beam carries a superimposed service (unfactored) dead load of 15KN/m and a service
live load of 36KN/m. Unit weight of concrete is 23.5 KN/m3. Determine the required tension steel
area (Cc= 65mm)
Situation 4
A8m beam which is fixed at the left support and propped at the right support is made of reinforced
concrete having a width of 290mm and overall depth of 490mm. The beam is loaded with uniform dead
load of 35KN/m (including its own weight), and a uniform live load of 55KN/m. Given f’c =24MPa and
fy=415MPa. Concrete cover is 60mm from the centroid of the bars. Assume EI is constant. Use NSCP
2010 & 2001.
1. What is factored uniform load on the beam?
2. What is the vertical reaction (factored) at simple support?
3. What maximum nominal moment can the beam carry if it is to be designed as singly reinforced?
4. What is the required tension steel area at a point of maximum positive moment?
Situation 5.A rectangular reinforced concrete beam has a base “b1” mm and effective depth “d1” mm.
Concrete strength “f’c1” MPa and steel yield strength “fy1” MPa. Compression reinforcement, if necessary,
will be placed 70mm from the extreme concrete in compression. For this problem, the dead load moment
is “MD1” KN-m and the live load moment is “ML1” KN-m. Use NSCP 2010 & 2001.
1. What is the value of the required moment?
2. What is the value of the maximum steel ratio?
3. What is the required tension steel area?
If “MD2” KN-m and “ML2” KN-m, determine the following:
4. The required tension steel
5. The required compression steel area.
Situation6 . A 5m long simply supported concrete beam has a width of “b2” mm and an overall depth of
“dt2” mm. The beam is reinforced with “ As” at the bottom and “A’s” on top. Steel cover measure from
the center of the bar is 70mm, “f’c2”MPa and “f’y2” MPa. Total dead load including beam weight is “DL2”
MPa. Use NSCP 2010 & 2001.
1. What is the depth of the compression block?
2. What is the design strength of the section?
3. What is the additional concentrated live load can the beam carry at the midspan?
Situation 7. A propped beam shown in the figure below is made of reinforced concrete having a width of
“b3” mm and overall depth of “dt3” mm. The beam is loaded with uniform dead load of “DL3” KN/m
(including its own weight), a concentrated live load of “LL3” KN , and uniform live load of “ LL4” KN/m.
Given “f’c3” MPa, “ fy3” MPa. Compression reinforcement, if necessary, will be placed 60mm from the
extreme concrete in compression.. Assume EI is constant. Use NSCP 2010 & 2001.
1. Determine the ultimate moment capacity of the beam due to loads.
2. Determine the Maximum ultimate moment capacity of the beam due to beam properties.
3. Determine the required steel area.
