Poetry LapBook

During our studies of poetry, we’ll be learning about different styles of poetry, as well as
different poetic elements and structures of poetry. Beside writing poetry, I’d like you to
show your knowledge of what you’re learning in a fun, artistic way. Each of you will
make a Poetry LapBook! Your LapBook will contain the following three requirements:

1. Poetic Structures:
These are the terms we have learned about how poems are organized and written.
You will create a 4-flap foldable flytrap containing definitions of these words:
• Line
• Stanza
• Rhyme
• Rhythm
In the center of your flytrap, you will write or find poem that shows all these
elements.

2. Poetic Elements
These are terms we have learned about how poets use language to create pictures
and meaningful moments with words. You will create a flip-flap section of your
LapBook containing definitions for the following words:
• alliteration
• simile
• metaphor
• personification
• onomatopoeia
• hyperbole

3. Styles of Poetry
These are the different kinds and types of poems we have read. You will need to
include an example of each style of poetry we have studied written by you!! You’ll
need to write the following styles of poems:
• Free Verse
• Cinquain
• Acrostic
• Haiku
• Concrete
• Limerick

Don’t panic! A lot of this looks new to you right now, but we will learn all of this together
through some really great poetry! Keep this instructional sheet in your poetry folder to
remind you of what you’ll need to complete this project.
