The conjunction indicates that the second word, phrase, clause, or sentence contains an additional fact that is related
to the earlier word, phrase, clause, or sentence. They can be translated as “not only, but also”. In this unit, we can
observe the conjunction words: “不不仅仅是…, 还是…” 和 “即…, 也…”.

Dual Coding
既 (jì) can be used in conjunction with either ⼜又 (yòu) or 也 (yě) to express that something is "both A and B":
A and B can be adjectives, verbs or short phrases. Most of the time A and B will take the same form i.e. if A is an
adjective B will also be an adjective.

Conjunctions to describe
condition or cause-effect
否则… (condition)
为了了…, 才… (cause-effect)
These conjunctions describe the condition that needs to be met for something to happen. Conjunctions of cause
highlight a cause-effect relationship between two ideas or give a reason why something happens or is the case. In this
unit, we meet “否则…” and “为了了…, 才…” in the reading.
(Do) X , 否则 Y
Demand Consequence
Dual Coding
否则 expresses strong demands. Much like saying "you need to do X, otherwise/if not, Y will happen (as a
consequence). It is mostly translated as otherwise, if not, else, or else.

Purpose Action
为了了 (wèile) is most often used to indicate the purpose of an action or the person that will benefit from some act of
kindness. In the "purpose" sense, it almost exactly corresponds to "in order to" or "for the purpose of" in English.
Example:
为了了明天不不迟到, 他定好了了闹钟。

(虽然) … , 但是 ...
These conjunctions connect ideas that contrast. The most common conjunctions that introduce clauses of contrast
are: although, though, and even though. In the unit readings, we can meet “ 虽然…, 但是…”.
虽然 + A , 但是 + B
one aspect the adverse
Dual Coding
虽然⋯⋯ 但是⋯⋯ expresses that while the former part of the sentence is true, there is an adverse reaction in the
latter part. You can think of it as meaning "although," but unlike in English, you still need to follow it up with a "but"
word in Chinese.
