SHEET (1): Fluid Statics: Fluid Pressure and Hydrostatic Forces on Surfaces
2. A manometer connects an oil pipeline and a water pipeline as shown in figure. Determine
the difference in pressure between the two pipelines using the readings on the manometer.
Use Soil= 0.86 and SHg = 13.6.

4. A closed cylindrical tank filled with water has a
hemispherical dome and is connected to an inverted
piping system as shown in figure. If the pressure
gage reading at (A) is 60 kPa, determine:
(i) the pressure in pipe (B), and
(ii) the pressure head, in millimeters of mercury,
at the top of the dome (point C).
7. In the figure, the shaft can keep the gate closed for
up to a moment of 150 kN.m, and then, the shaft will
fail and the gate will open under the liquid pressure.
Determine the maximum value of the liquid depth (h).

8. A circular plate 3 m diameter is immersed in water
in such a way that its greatest and least depth below
the free surface are 1.5 m and 4 m respectively.
Determine the total force on the face of the plate and
the position of the centre of pressure.

12. Find the net hydrostatic force on the rectangular panel
(AB) and determine its line of action. The gate is 1 m wide.
Gate 6 m wide

16. If the water depth is h = 2 m, determine the
magnitude and direction of the resultant force, due to
water pressure acting on the parabolic surface of the
dam, which has a width of 5 m.
17. A cube of wood having an edge dimension of 20 cm and a density of 650 kg/m3 floats
on water:
a) What is the distance (h) from the horizontal top surface of the cube to the water level ?
b) How much weight (w) has to be placed on top of the cube so that its top is just level with
the water?
18. The cylinder floats in the water and oil to the level shown.
Determine the weight of the cylinder
19. Determine the volume and density of an object that weighs 4 N in water and 5 N in an
alcohol of S.G .0.8
