EDID 6509 Designing Learning

& Performance Solutions

By: Dauran McNeil

This presentation is a display of my individual contributions and iterations as a team-member

of Solution Consultants. The stints include Problem Based Learning, Computer Supportive
Collaborative Work/Learning and Performance Supportive Systems. A final reflection
concludes this presentation.

Problem Based Learning

Contribution & Justification
I assisted my team with creating a problem. Afterwhich, I assisted the team with creating an iteration
of the prototype. The iteration I created was an electronic version of the first prototype. This
iteration of the prototype allowed users to solve the problems through the medium of technology via
a simulation version of the classroom prototype.
The justification of this was to allow young users to problem solve in a simulated environment with
the use of technology. The idea behind the use of technology with this iteration was to spark the
learner’s curiosity, engagement and foster collaborative skills, which may result in a greater level of
achievement. Druin (2002) supports that technology assist children to learn how to work with other
people, become aware of their communication and collaboration skills (p. 29).

Opportunity for Improvement

If I could do anything differently, I would eliminate the electronic iteration because I believe it will
hinder the collaboration, which is necessary for problem based learning. Additionally, there was not
much thought given to how this iteration would work to achieve problem based learning. For
example, would iteration allow for multiple users within a single session.

Enhancement & Justification

My enhanced iteration would present a problem of an incorrect sentence structure. Then the
students would either correct the sentence structure, add or eliminate words using the word
containers to solve the problem. This enhanced iteration would have a greater level of achievement
with problem based approaches such as collaboration among the students, engagement and problem
solving skills .

Computer-Supported Collaborative Work/Learning

Contribution & Justification
My contribution to the project was creating the iterations of the team proposed solution to the case.
An additional feature called Agenda was added to the Slack CSCW environment to facilitate planning,
collaboration and management. The feature provided a centralized interface screen that allowed
team members to view outstanding activities, status, comments and attendee.

Opportunity for Improvement

In the third iteration, a timetable feature was added to the initial iteration. Hence, if I can do
something different I would eliminate the time table feature. Unfortunately, I do not believe this
addition works coherently and seamlessly with the initial solution. Therefore, I feel the agenda
feature will function better as a stand alone feature.

Enhancement & Justification

The proposed adjustment will disregard the timetable feature to keep the task specific function of
the agenda. With this additional feature omitted, users may focus to achieving a specific function
without having to execute or analyze multiple screens of information. This enhanced version will
allow users to either insert a task or review the status of a particular task via the agenda integrated
feature to the Slack CSCW environment. Team members would be able to collaborate on a task by
providing updates and comments.

Performance Support System

Contribution & Justification

I provided a case scenario and assisted my team with the selection of the group case. The selection
of our case allowed for performance support through the use of various media. It also provided an
authentic performance situation application to the real world. My contribution to this stint provide
performance support to one of the task - entering grades. I provided a visual and audio
demonstration of the performance with a view to facilitate training and productivity by allowing
individuals to watch the step- by-step video.

Opportunity for Improvement

Considering that all of the iterations were multimedia, I propose for a training
manual/documentation. This document will detail the instructions step-by-step in order to perform
the task. The reason for this, would be in the event an individual does not have access to multimedia
players and need to perform the task the document would be accessible.

Enhancement & Justification

The proposed change will entail a document outlining the steps to perform the task. This proposal is
necessary in the event users are unable to access the training video.

Reflection

This design process allowed me to take an introspect into what I may potentially
encounter in the real world as an Instructional Designer. During the design process I
encountered a few challenges such as collaboration. Being able to collaborate as a group
and being on one accord are essential skills when working as a team. Unfortunately, as a
group we were lacking these skills at times and it showed in our final product. At moments,
I was able to guide the group back on track by sharing important design perspectives.
These challenges are learning experiences for me by which I can learn how to share my
design perspective without being intrusive or overbearing. If it's one thing I can take away
from this experience, it would be knowing that a project may not always take the right
direction or the direction you personally envision. But instead, you should remain flexible
and open to other perspectives.
As it relates to theory, after completing these assignments and developing solutions
I realize the importance of having a theoretical background by which you can develop your
solutions. More importantly, most of my teamwork and individual work was grounded in
the constructivist approach. Most of the solutions allowed the learner to acquire
knowledge, learn and build thereof. As a team, most of approach to the design process
applied the ADDIE model though we were not able to implement and evaluate.
If I could do anything differently, I would take a more creative and out-of-the box
approach to design solutions. I believe as a team, we were too focused on getting the
assignment right that it stifled our creative ability. On the other hand, taking a risk should
have been our mindset, which could have increased our confidence in each other and our
design. Secondly, I would have place more emphasis on the outcome and purpose of each
design. I believe by doing this our designs would have exhibited creativity and out of the
box thinking.
Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed brainstorming potential solutions for the
problems. This aspect of the design process challenge me to be creative and think outside
the box. I also enjoyed creating the prototypes and iterations. This aspect provided
exposure to different resources, which may be helpful in the future. Overall, I found this
experience to be one by which I can learn and develop my skills in the field of instructional
design.
