Philosophy of Education

I believe that students coming to school and learning every day is just as essential in
their life as food and clothes are. Students must learn how to take multiple approaches to
achieve proficiency of the academic concepts. Within that, the students must be interested in
the materials they’re learning or the way the material is being presented. I believe that each
teacher must teach to the way their students learn best. If this means to theme the material
around cars, hearts, or maybe even butterflies, this may be how a teacher will rope a child in to
to the lesson so they are able to learn to the best of their ability. It is also essential, especially
with younger students, that they take frequent movement breaks in or outside of the
classroom. If teaching this way helps the students learn and pay attention, then it is what
should be done to help the students grow.
Also, I believe that a teacher must be flexible. They should be flexible with how, when,
what, and where to teach. The teacher must teach to the students needs. If a student is
confused with a topic and does not do well, the teacher needs to be flexible to pull the student
aside and assist, or maybe even reteach a whole lesson. No matter how hard every teacher tries
to plan their week, nothing will ever happen exactly when it is planned or how it is planned.
I think that when learning new material, students should be able to explore the materials and
draw their own thoughts and conclusions. Allowing the students to explore before will make
them more interested in the information. There should never be a day where students do not
get to experience a hands on approach to learning something new. Allowing students to
explore will make them constantly interested in learning new things, taking that step to
becoming a life long learner. Students must receive timely feedback to be able to learn from
their mistakes and see how they can improve. This will help them become a life long learner.
When it comes to assessing my students, I do not want to always be giving tests or
quizzes. I believe that the students should showcase their knowledge through games, activities,
researching material, making posters, creating a skit, etc. I believe that giving a child a quiz is
not a proper way to assess their knowledge. They may have the materials memorized, but what
matters is if they can take that information and apply it to something else.
I want my students to enjoy coming to school and learning. I want my students to feel
welcomed in the classroom with not only me, but also their peers. During the first few weeks of
school, I will have the students participate in community building activities to build a positive
sense of community. I want to build a positive rapport with every one of my students so they
know that I care about them as a person, not just their grades. This also goes hand in hand with
my student’s parents. I want the parents to feel comfortable coming to me with any questions
or concerns. I want to send home weekly newsletters so they know what to expect the
upcoming few weeks. I want to take pictures of the students exploring and show their parents. I
want the parents to feel like they are part of the classroom. By building a positive community in
my classroom, differentiating my assessments, and being flexible with the learners in my
classroom, I believe I can produce classroom after classroom of life long learners.
