Goals and Outcomes

1st Grade General Music


Unit: Steady Beat and Rhythm

Unit Goals:
● To provide students with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the
concepts of steady beat and rhythm through experiencing them both internally and
externally in the classroom.
● To provide students with enough knowledge to take these concepts out of the classroom
and be able to identify steady beats and rhythms in sounds and music all around them in
their everyday lives.
● To provide students with a foundation for further success by helping them grasp basic
principles of music that will be further developed and scaffolded as they continue in
school.
● To provide my students with a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable environment where they
are not judged for their performance and skill levels.
● To provide all students with an equal and culturally sustaining curriculum that fits their
needs and moves at their pace.

National Core Arts Standards Addressed:


MU:Cr1.1.1
a. With limited guidance, create musical ideas (such as answering a musical question) for a
specific purpose.

Demonstrate and describe music’s expressive qualities (such as dynamics and tempo).

With limited guidance, demonstrate and identify how specific music concepts (such as beat or
pitch) are used in various styles of music for a purpose.

Demonstrate understanding of relationships between music and the other arts, other disciplines,
varied contexts, and daily life.

Objectives in Unit Lessons:


● After being a member of my music classroom, students will:
○ LP 1
■ S. will keep a steady beat in the welcome song and “Apple Tree” and
other songs sung in class
■ S. will demonstrate understanding of movements explained in their
welcome song, “As I Was Walking Down the Street” by performing action
they are singing
■ S. will sing “Apple Tree” while keeping a steady beat on their bodies
■ S. will sing and keep a steady beat by themselves or with a partner in
front of entire class
■ S. will demonstrate understanding of steady beat by responding to
questions asked in class and by coming up with real-world examples of
steady beat
○ LP 2
■ S. will pat “Bow Wow Wow” steady beat on their bodies
■ S. will perform movements of “Bow Wow Wow” to a steady beat at
contrasting tempos
■ S. will develop their own steady beats (new tempo) and sing “Bow Wow
Wow” to their new tempo
■ S. will clap rhythm of “Bow Wow Wow” in contrast to the steady beat
○ LP 3
■ S. will Sing ​This Land is Your Land ​with a steady beat and accurate
rhythms
■ S. will listen to and sing ​This Land is Your Land​ as it is read to them
● S. will discuss differences in various regions of the United States
displayed in the book
■ S. will answer questions pertaining to the book and relate the book to their
lives
■ S. will think about the concept of sharing where they live and what it
means to them to appreciate your neighbors
■ S. will discuss topics like what it means to share the United States today
and how/why people are being turned away to live here.
● S. will discuss what it means to let be kind to people who do have
the same views or lifestyles as your own
■ S. will clap the steady beat and rhythm while singing ​This Land is Your
Land

Student Learning Outcomes:


● Content knowledge: Students will understand and be able to demonstrate steady beat
and rhythm.
● Collaboration: Students will be more comfortable and confident in working together to
accomplish a goal, like performing in small groups.
● Connection: Students will connect the concepts of steady beat and rhythm to music in
their everyday lives.
● Diversity: Students will have a better knowledge and ability to discuss topics that focus
on how and why they are stronger from working with people that are different than them.
