Required practical 8: Investigating the frequency, wavelength and speed of waves in solids and liquids

Possible alternatives
Alternative methods are
• A stroboscope can be used to determine the frequency and aid the measurement of wavelength. Once the
stroboscope’s frequency is matched to the frequency of the vibrations, this value can be recorded. It would
also give a stationary image of the wave which should make it easier for students to measure the wavelength,
provided throughout so you
can complete the required
without needing a camera. There are some health warnings associated with this piece of equipment because it
can affect those with epilepsy.

Health and safety

It is very important to note that strobe lights can trigger photo-sensitive
epilepsy if the frequency of flashes is around 16–25 Hz. practicals using the equipment
Extension questions
• Students can design an experiment to investigate how different densities of liquid may affect wave speed.
This could be achieved by using the same equipment as in Part A – waves through a liquid. The different
you have to hand.
densities of liquid could be achieved either by dissolving salt/sugar in water until saturation or by using liquids
of various viscosities. For more information on measuring the density of a liquid, see Required practical 5 on
page 26 of the Student Lab Book or page 68 of the AQA GCSE (9–1) Physics Student Book. Students
should find that the speed of the wave increases as the density increases.
• Students could research how a strobe light works and create a method for Required practical 8 using this
piece of equipment.

used and the use of capacitors to deliver a large amount of current in a very short amount of time. Students
may also find various uses of strobe lights, including observing high speed machinery and measuring the
frequency of an object. They could adapt both methods in this practical to use strobe lights to determine
frequency. Once the frequency of flashes matches the frequency of the wave, the wave will appear to be
‘frozen’.
• Students can investigate the relationship shown in ‘Further application question 1d’ between the frequency,
length, tension and mass of a one metre long piece of string.
This can be done with the equipment used for Part A – waves through a solid.

Promote active learning with

It is important, however, that students find the frequency of the first harmonic.
See the diagram for the shape created by the waves on the string.

Linked experiments
• Finding the speed of light with chocolate and a microwave oven – a microwave oven works by creating a
standing wave inside very similar to the string experiment. There are points where the amplitude varies greatly
linked experiments to support
(hot spots) and points where the amplitude does not vary at all (cold spots). By measuring the distance
between two hot spots (this is equivalent to half a wavelength) and finding the frequency of the microwaves
(this is usually on the back of the oven) you can calculate the speed of light using the wave speed equation.
This is an experiment that can be done in class, but an appropriate risk assessment will need to be put in
the teaching of a concept.
place. Alternatively, students can be given instructions on how to do this safely at home.
• A ripple tank can be used to show reflection of waves at a boundary and refraction of waves. Refraction can
be achieved by placing a block under the water producing a shallower area within the tank. It can be observed
that the wavelength of the waves decreases as they pass over the shallower area, showing a slowing down of
the waves. See Figure 6.16 and 6.20 on pages 188–189 of the AQA GCSE (9–1) Physics Student Book for
diagrams showing this effect.
• Required practical 9: Reflection and refraction – This practical looks at waves changing direction when they
reach a boundary, either reflecting off the surface or transmitting through the material and refracting. More
information on this practical can be found on page 52 of the Student Lab Book and also on pages 195–198
of the AQA GCSE (9–1) Physics Student Book.
• Finding the speed of sound in air – students can conduct an experiment to measure the speed of sound in air
by timing how long it takes for a sound to travel a set distance. For a reasonable determination to be made,
the sound will have to travel more than 200 metres. This experiment is likely to be quite inaccurate as it will
rely heavily on the students’ reaction time and wind may affect the actual speed. This could illicit a discussion
around reducing uncertainties in measurements and maintaining control variables.
