Lexus RX350 sport. Since then
it’s become quite popular; BMW
began using it in 2015 under the name
GA8F22AW. GM started using in 2016
as the 8F45. And it started showing up
in Volvo in 2014 as their TG-81SC.
These transaxles have been on the
road for about five years now and are
getting a lot of miles on them. With all
the different manufacturers using this
transaxle, there’s no doubt you’ll be
seeing it in your shop before long.
In the December issue of GEARS,
we covered the valve body from a 2015
Lexus RX350 sport with a 3.5-liter
engine. We identified bolt locations,
check valves, solenoids, valves and
springs, and covered a few assembly
tips.
In this issue, we’re going beyond
the valve body, to look through the unit
itself.
With the unit out of the car and on
the bench, remove the eight bolts that
hold the valve body in place (figure 2).
We’ve identified the bolt locations and
lengths, along with the bolt torque for
reassembly.

One design that is making a major
transition into the transmissions
of today is the mechanical diode
(MD).
Mechanical diodes were first
introduced into mass produced
automatic transmissions with the
Ford 4R70 family of transmis-
sions. Since that time, we have
seen MD devices in the 5R110,
CD4E, 6L50, 6T** GM, 6F**
Ford, 8F** Ford, 9T**GM as well
as some Asian manufactures such
as Mazda.
The mechanical diode is
a fairly simple concept using a
series of “struts” to lock the inner
and outer races together, while
allowing the struts to lay down
when the MD is overrunning.
With continued pressure to
improve fuel economy and to

print, a new design product has
been introduced, the “CMD” or Figure 1

the CMD is connected via ports to
the valve body (figure 5). In the case

both ports are pressurized, locking the

This makes the CMD act as a brake

onda/Acura transmissions have
evolved quite a bit over the past
couple decades. When looking
back to the five-speed transmissions
from the early 2000s, you’ll find a
fairly complicated electronic and
hydraulic system that uses shift sole-
noids to position shift valves, where
either line pressure or clutch pressure
control (CPC) pressure is directed to
the clutches.
The shift solenoids states changed
frequently because there were in-gear
states and in-between gear states. Line
pressure was directed to the clutches
when in a gear, and CPC pressure
was directed to a clutch when the
transmission was between gears.
After a decade or so, Honda
engineers figured out that the CPC
solenoids could always control pres-
sure to the clutches, so their next
generation of transmissions primarily
used CPC solenoids for total clutch
control. This simplified the hydrau-
lic operation, making the hydraulic
schematic easier to read.
