Goals, Principles,
and Strategies

Goals for my
Learning
Community
I hope to lead a learning
community that encourages
collaboration, motivation for
learning, and mutual respect for
oneself and others.
Key Principles:
1. Students should be pushed to
collaborate with all their peers and
therefore make connections that
ultimately create a positive learning
community.
2. There should be a focus on increasing
intrinsic motivation in the classroom
and keeping extrinsic motivation at a
minimum.
3. Students should be held accountable
for their actions by each other and by
me. As the teacher, I must respect
students and expect to be respected.

Motivation
Theory
I believe that the focus in a
classroom should be on getting
students intrinsically motivated
for learning. This is done by
giving them positive role models
who are excited about learning.
Key Principles:
1. Intrinsic motivation must be modeled by me, the
teacher. I need to be excited about learning in

Self-evaluation is key in getting students
intrinsically motivated. They should be setting

goals and tracking their progress.
There is a time and place for material rewards,
but only when students go above and beyond
what is expected of them.
Stages of Development
In upper elementary, students have passed the egocentric
stage and are beginning to understand empathy.
Therefore, they are able to do things for the good of doing
them, rather than for a reward. They are also beginning to
think abstractly which allows them to self-regulate and set
goals for their learning.

Developing a
Healthy
Community
With these key strategies, students are
encouraged to self-regulate. Things like
social contracts and behavior targets
encourage students to evaluate their
actions within the community. Things
like learning targets and assignment
checklists push them to evaluate their
academic progress.
Covenant - Key Strategies
1. Have students sit with and work with new people often.
2. Appoint a Star Student every week (randomly) and do things to honor
that student and help the class get to know them.
3. Make a point to talk with each student individually regularly.
Content - Key Strategies
1. Have a regular morning routine to get students into school mode
(devotions, prayer, announcements, etc.).
2. Have the schedule and learning targets visible in the classroom each
day.
3. Brainstorm with students when would be the appropriate times to go to
the bathroom, get a drink, sharpen their pencil, etc. and hold them to

When students finish a larger assignment, give them a checklist (or even
have them create a checklist as a class), and evaluate their own work
before turning it in.
Conduct - Key Strategies
1. Create a social contract with students and refer back to it often, when
addressing negative AND positive things.
2. Come up with a variety of ways to get the class’ attention and change it
up often, so one method does not get worn out (Tick, tack, toe/Three in a
row, Give me Five, simply waiting, ringing a bell, etc.)
3. Set behavioral targets for specific lessons when necessary and post
those (like learning targets above).
4. Construct a set of steps to follow as negative behavior from one student
continues (for example, give warning, move seat, take away break time,
send to office, call parents)

Responses to
Breakdowns in
the Community
The following responses align with my
classroom goals because they attempt to
mend the brokenness in the community
of learners. These responses also align
with my worldviews as a Christian
teacher because they acknowledge that
all students (and teacher) make mistakes
but have a chance to be forgiven.
Key Strategies
1. Taking away recess/break time and
having them reflect on the incident
2. Conversation with individual student in
the hall or a guided conversation with the
two or more students involved
3. Conversation with the parent (and the
student if possible)
Encouraging Restoration
I believe these responses encourage restoration
because they focus less on “punishment” and more
on reflecting, talking out issues, and doing better in
the future.
