Short-Term Teaching Goals

Plan to Reach the Goal (i.e., professional

Short-Term Goal development, research on the Internet,
observation of a veteran teacher, etc.)
1. One goal that I want to make sure I To accomplish this goal, I will work on
have mastery over before I begin my setting up and establishing my classroom
first year of teaching is classroom procedures and routines, going in depth into
management. each procedure and finding an engaging way
to teach the routines. I will also ensure that
each student knows each routine and that
they practice it many times and that there are
specific things the students have to do when
they don’t follow the routines. For example,
my CT has this routine where the students
have to have all chairs pushed in before they
line up for lunch. If she notices that a chair
isn’t pushed in when all the students have
lined up, that student has to wait until the
others have left and then they have to go to
every chair and do a push in check before
they can leave as well. It’s something small
and it is not necessarily a punishment, but it
is helpful because it reminds students to
always push in their chairs. I want to do
something like that for each of my routines
as a helpful reminder. That will be the first
kind of step to establish classroom
management, as I believe that this will by
extremely helpful in doing so in my future
classroom. Next, I will research classroom
management methods. However, I want to
ensure that I have methods that align with
my instructional methods; therefore, I will
look for classroom management styles that
are for teachers who are a little softer and
how to implement a PBiS system with
rewards that are maintainable. Finally, I will
observe and ask for guidance from teachers
whose style parallels mine to assure that I am
being the best I can be and constantly
looking for ways to improve in this way.

2. My next short-term goal would be to I haven’t gotten very much practice planning
practice lesson planning for Science for Science and Social Studies; however,
and Social Studies. soon I will be discontinuing teaching
Reading so that I will have some time
leftover during this period to develop other
skills that have been lacking a bit and
observe other grades to really gain
knowledge about what subjects and/or grades
I would like to teach. Therefore, I will ask
other teachers who I have formed
relationships with if they would be willing to
let me observe and/or teach some of these
lessons in their classrooms. If they do let me,
I will be able to practice at least a little
planning for these subjects using the skills I
have gained from Student Teaching.

3. My last short-term goal would be to When I am teaching keeping classroom

develop my enthusiasm as I am management in mind, I often keep a more
teaching. stern attitude in the classroom. Sometimes I
feel like the stern attitude keeps it from
seeming like I am extremely enthusiastic
about the subject. I want to work on this by
maybe trying to ask for help from friends to
go through some mock lessons this summer
to see how I could find a good middle
ground for this kind of instruction. Further, I
want to study some of Ron Clark’s methods
to maintaining this enthusiasm. I believe that
if you are enthusiastic about the subject you
are teaching, students will sense this and
follow the model represented by you as a
teacher. I hope to also observe some teachers
who just seem to have this innate enthusiasm
so that I can find a way for enthusiasm to fit
into my style of teaching.
