Engineer/Analyst: Print Date:

Checker: Print Date:

1. Objective/Purpose (required)

Objective
Problem Statement
End Product
Analysis performed in the calculation
Identify the calculation’s design requirements and applicable National/International Codes and
Standards.

2. Summary of Results and Conclusions (optional)

For lengthy or complex calculations

Summarize the results and conclusions contained in later sections, highlighting the key points.

3. Introduction/Background (optional)

Provide any background information needed to understand the calculation purpose.

4. Input Data (required)

Digital and or hard copies

References
State used information for the calculations
Voluminous database to be stated and referred to digital archive
List data files used in computer codes, with associated release numbers or dates
Attach copies of reference information to simplify the checking, review and approval process.
State assumptions

5. Assumptions (required if assumptions are made)

State assumptions resulting from engineering judgment with bases or reasoning

State assumptions that are stated must be used within the calculation

6. Method of Analysis (required)

Engineering Calculation Format

State method to “stand alone” in quality and completeness so that a reasonably knowledgeable person
would not have to seek the originator’s input on the methodology used in order to arrive at the same
conclusions.
Provide a brief description of the method of solution, numerical computations, and identification of the
source or derivation of all equations that are not common usage.
Provide diagrams, sketches, photographs, or drawings to clarify extent of the calculation and provide
visual association with the actual configuration.
Provide free body diagrams for structural calculations, with dimensions, forces, moments, and
reactions; representing the actual configuration.
Provide validity of model or correlation if a formulation has been taken from an unpublished reference
(such as an internal memo) or was developed by the engineer/analyst (ensure no negative impacts to
the conclusion)
Annex complex calculations or spreadsheets not readily contained within the body of the calculation in
separate appendices
Provide information necessary to reconstruct the analysis, including hand calculations
Provide methodology for repetitive calculations for the first time, provide reference for subsequent
calculations
Verify spreadsheets by adequate hand calculations before using them

7. Use of Computer Software (required if software is used)

Provide computer software application information such as program name, version numbers, release
dates, references to user manuals, software verification documentation (if not used before) or
verification references and name and version of any add-in software
Calculations: Excel Spreadsheet (Use 2010): Developed, documented, and verified on the same sheet or
annexed
Drawings: AutoCAD (Use 2012/2009 and save as 2007): Use proper model and layout contents, line
types and scaling.
Surveying: AutoCAD Land Desktop 2007 / CIVIL 3D 2012 and save as 2007
Mapping/Database: Arc GIS (use 9.3/10): Topographical map, database maintenance. Naming of layers
and references
Structural Analyses: SAP (use 15)/STAAD Pro V8i: modeling and designing as per actual structures
Geological/Geotechnical:
PHASE 2 V7: underground structures, slope stability, flownet, support design (preference software)
UNWEDGE V8: underground wedge analyses
ROCK SUPPORT V4: included in PHASE 2
ROCK LAB V1.3: Calculation rock parameters
SWEDGE V4.08: surface wedge analyses
EXAMINE 2D V7: rock stresses
DIP V5.1: Surface wedge analyses, stereo net projection
PLAXSIS 3D TUNNEL V1.1: Tunnel analyses and design (preference software)
HEC-RAS : River hydraulics
SPSS 4: Database

8. Results (required)

Describe the results obtained.

The number of significant figures consistent with the quality of the data and with its purpose
Reinforcement and production of results as per construction sequences

9. Conclusions (required)

2|Page
Hydro Solutions Engineering Consultant P Ltd (HSEC)
Engineering Calculation Format

Describe the degree to which the objectives and purpose have been met along with information on the
appropriateness and completeness of the results for the intended purpose

10. Recommendations (optional)

List the recommendation(s) including basis information

11. References (required)

Provide adequate references such as: drawings, reports, change notices, manuals, publications, codes,
and standards
Provide the title, author (or company), and revision number or publication date, if available
References that may not be retrievable in the future shall be added to the document as attachments
The engineer/analyst must be able to supply the reviewer with a copy of any document cited in the
analysis.

12. Attachments and Appendixes (optional)

Include additional information such as computer software documentation (including spreadsheet
printouts), calculation review checklist(s), spreadsheet verification form(s), detailed calculations not
readily contained in the main body, extensive compilations of input data, inspection reports, and copies
of references, memos, or pages of manuals

13. Archiving (required)

Register the calculations at the Archive Desk (Saraswati)
Keep a backup copy in the project team
